  • Sry 4 disliking your other vids but I want to make an entire werewolf costume I didn't press dislike my brother did so I actually really liked ur vids

  • @officialLILYwolf01 Ha! thanks!! Brothers can be good things or awful things depending on the circumstances.

  • I LOVE your videos. My biggest question is how to make them taller? I am workong on a large project which requires me to be about a foot taller than i am now. Any advice?

  • Nice

  • What angle are the stilts at in the video? You said at 70 degrees he couldnt wear them for very long. Because i would like then to be taller because im making faun/deer legs so i dont want them as clunky as say a werewolf needs and i also have big legs so im trying to keep them as thin as possible but if there is no other way i can trim down the length behind the heel.

  • WANT

  • Ah, I guess I'll have to try a different degisn. Thanks anyways

  • Hey um how do you make the top part shorter? I wanna make them shorter-any ideas for digit grade stilts that raise you 6" without having ANYTHING past your ankles (but the shoes)

  • @DarkReshiram1 You can do it, but you have to be super aggressive with the bungees.

Without bungee cords to pull you upright the stilts are VERY difficult to wear. So if you can have only a little at the end of your ankle you'll need lots of hard core bungee action. Plan to make a test pair that you'll not keep, you'll need at least one test pair to get the design right.

  • are you ellen page?

  • is it possible to shorten the back of the piece that the shoe is attached to (to create a slimmer leg when finished), or are the proportions necessary for balance?

  • @stayonthesidewalk If you make them at a steeper angle you can really decrease the extension size. However, the more of an angle the harder they are to wear for extended periods. At 70 degrees Ben could only wear them for 15 minutes at a time before his legs felt on fire from the effort. Check the how to make book and how to size stilts video

  • does anyone else notice he looks like mac from always sunny in Phili? o.O

  • that is so awesome!!! me and my dad built a pair for me. there for my home made wolf costume that looks pretty sweet. im going to enter my schools costume contest on the 28th. i think i might win. im going to post a video of the stlits soon so check out my channnel often.

  • Is it possible to run on them?

  • @dorkboy394 Yes, but CAREFULLY. See what it looks like in the finished stilt video.

  • brilliant stuff. would like to see what you could do with a bigger budget and a bit more time.

  • Reminds me of a worgen in wow! :O

  • Here's my idea (and I need serious help!)

I'm trying to make anthro hooves for a SUCCUBUS outfit.

Any idea/suggestions/tips anything! Would be really appreciated!!!

I've never made anything before pertaining to a costume, so, if anyone knows where I can buy this, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. :)

  • Do You Think I Could Build These For Hight With A Few Modifications For My Cosplay In 2012 - Akon 23 ?

  • how much did it cost to make the legs? including fur, of course! :D

  • so i have build a pair and they work brilliantly but the issue is the shoe is bolted to the wood but the bolt keeps pulling through the shoe as well as digging into my foot quite painfully... any ideas???

  • @koolcat232 Check the video on padding the stilts--I use EVA foam and silicone putty to make a very cozy shoe.

  • @koolcat232 did you use washers (metal doughnut things)? I used two underneath each screw, a large one to make absolute sure it wouldn't fall through, and a smaller one to make sure that one worked.

  • Yeah, it's the same idea for my saber tooh cat suit. Thanks, for this good video.

  • Thank You For Providing This Video Im Going To Be Using These For My Pokemon Cosplay For A-Kon 23. All The Credit For The Stilts And The Design Will go to you.

  • I may try to make a pair of these. It would be quite an impressive project for shop class.

  • this gives me a idea for a elite construm from halo thank u so much

  • @TheOrk1234 Yeah there's like 3 videos on Youtube of elites based on this and they are mad awesome. Make sure to see the how to size stilts video and the how to book on my channel!

  • These are pretty impressive, and I love the simplicity. Since I basically have unlimited access to all the woodshop and metalshop facilities at my school, I'm probably gonna make these sometime soon. Do you think they would work with longer stilts,

  • Are they tiresome to walk on?

  • @Rosalila It depends on how steep the stilts are and your personal fitness. In the book on how to make stilts there's four accounts from people who have worn them to let you get a feel for what it's like.

  • @gryphern ...BTW the how to book can be found on my channel page!

  • @gryphern You know, I wrote a comment calling you out on using "lame" as a suitable insult (which it's not, it's just as bad as "gay"), but upon reading spandexxking's original douchey comment, uhhhh I've gotta side with you anyways.

  • Thank you SO much for posting this stuff and explaining everything! I plan on creating my own pair for a satyr type of costume.

  • Do you think these would work for a quad suit? I'm planning on making a doublehead from silent hill for halloween, and their legs are pretty skinny, and I really only need a bit of a stilt to move the toes and make it more realistic, this is my first costume, so do you have any advice i could use?

    Please and thanks

  • @SaberWingDragon I think that if you use these stilts, maybe steepen them a bit, and then have some sort of crutches for the arms, so that your torso and the ground make about a 20 degree angle.

  • Comment removed

  • is that uncomterable or comfy? it looks like fun to be inside a wolf costume. I very much want to order a wolf quad suit from Beastcub.

  • o.o.....awesome!!! me wants!! lol ^_^ hey cool when i have money do you make and ship those for people? thats way cool!

  • sweet.. i love the idea of having the toes on the costume be about to move around!!

  • The last line made the video fifteen times better than it already was, which was a freaking lot of awesome, not gonna lie.

  • Amazing. Just. Amazing.

  • Oh goodness...I'd be so scared of tripping over the feet! With those hinges and all, does that happen often?

  • Excellent design, I've been wanting a set for awhile, but I'd like to try cloven hooves, perhaps I'll make a set of these and try to fashion some more once I understand the mechanics a bit better, thanks for posting.

  • whether the market can easily fall down?

  • thankyou im just worried they look kind of hard to stand on and balance

  • @wolfcookieo9 The balance depends on where you put the part of the stilt that touches the ground. Look at the video on how to siz ethe stilts and you'll see that there is a "good" way to build them so they balance well.

  • hay how much weight do those hold?

  • @wolfcookieo9 Ben weighs 200 pounds, and that works. I've had some beefier dudes write to me. If you're large and in charge, use thicker boards (like 2 inches.) One person did them in hardwood and was quite happy as well.

  • I made some like that but the i used a substitute for the kitchen drawer rails and also i didn't really need bungee cords i used my own balancing capabilities lol and i used a towel it kinda looks crapy but hey what ya gonna do i hardly had any equipment lol and my dad didnt really care lol but yeah thanks for the blue prints on googel :D

  • packacge includes:

    Stilt shoe component

    Hinged toe

    Bungee chord tendons

    Metal leg brace

Neighbours wondering what the hell your'e doing

  • Would y'all be able to make these using more durable materials? Like metal, or plastic? And how much would it cost (materials included) if you were to sell them?

  • Do you sell these?

  • Your idea just gave me an idea for my larp costume ! Thanks Hehe x)

  • i made this stilts and then while i was moving, grey hound made me throw them out because they dident let me take them when i was already half way around the country, im still pissed at them, took forever to build these and i loved wearing them too..

  • awsome job!

  • wow ty for this I want legs to move like in a costume i get one day.

  • that looks awesome! maybe ill ask my dad to help me make werewolf leg stilts : )

  • pretty cool, must be tiring though if you have to walk around like that for several hours :p

  • awesome instructions. I made my own pair this year for Halloween and they turned out great! I beefed up some of the hardware and made some design changes, but the majority of the layout is right from your video.

    Thanks so much.

Check out mine if you'd like to see what i did differently.

  • very nice, good creativity

  • I am so glad you said that at the end, my neighbors always wonder what the hell I'm doing.

  • can u run in them

  • Is it hard to walk in stilts like those? And can you walk on those for only a short time or is it possible to walk on those for a day? I'm asking this because I'm considering making my own stilts for a costume, but I'm afraid it'll hurt to walk in stilts.

  • gay

  • hey you sound like zoey from left 4 dead!

  • How durable would these stilts be? For instance, would one be able to safely wear these for a full night? or, long-term, would one be able to save these for generations? Reason being is I would like to make something similar to what you are making, though if I am going to spend a small fortune doing so.. I'd like to know it can last.. hehe.

  • is the female talking MagickLorelai?

  • please tell me where you got the fake fur! please!!??

  • i need to make a set of goat like horns for halloween!! ehow do i do it

  • if u live near Richland Hills TX me and my dad would rlly need som help this halloween lol

  • I would pay to get those, but im way to poor right now oh well

  • do u guys just do stilts or do can u make full costumes?

  • @Akiroth1 Both, but it's hard to do costumes, cuz people are like "i'll pay you 100 dollars to spend 40 hours on this thing for me." (100/40 = 2.5 dollars and hour, no money for materials.) So I get lots and lots of people asking for commissions, but maybe only one out of 25 will be willing to pay me to do work for them.

  • @gryphern yeah, I make my own costumes too and I get the same. Even after they know it takes a long time and its very laborious work not to include all the cleaning up and definitely the material expenses. Last halloween my costume took about 60 hrs to make and it merely a mask and burlap garment (I was this bloody goblin) and people everywhere were like I'll buy the materials if you make my costume next year or give you 100 bucks...LAME!!!

  • @gryphern Tell paypal.. Make me one.. 3500 dollars?

  • i would imagine extended use of these would produce extreme pressure and pain in the toe area very nice design though.

  • Check my channel and the more info box. There are several howto videos, a book, and a sizing demonstration.

  • can you give a step by step tutorial for this model and sppandeexxxx fag sht up. this is actually one of the coolest ways i have ever seen for costumes.

  • can you run

  • i have to mos def make a more refined female version of those less clunky..cool thanks for the ideas

  • I wasn't thinking werewolf the second time I watched this. You see, I'm making Age of Mythology "blueprints". For a cyclops costume, these would be excellent for the legs (the legs of the cyclops in the game are goat-like, but have the same structures as legs of birds and dogs.)

  • @NeonColorsDrummer These don't take the same kind of punishment that metal and plastic movie stilts do. When we made a pair of UBER stilts for a demo, Ben actually sheared the wood so much that a week after the demo the toe hinge ripped off. To be fair, the stilts were super light and dainty for the 13 inches of height they offered, but the stuff in underworld is harder to mimic for less than 50 bucks and simple tools.

  • man that cool

  • Can you run with them on?

  • where did you get thes these are awesome

i just wonder how you cover them up to make them look like werewolf feet

  • @spandexxking Oh my gosh, you're so cute! Did you know that "gay" mean having sex with an individual of the same sex?? The word you're looking for it "lame," try using "lame" in a sentence like, "the money you guys make from all your videos and custom commissions is so lame."

  • @spandexxking Yup, just liek Bob Villa, who also does crap with wood and hinges. But, honeysuckle, not fur fag: Prop designer. I don't wear costumes, I just get paid to make costumes But again, the fag designation is a 1/10 thing, so you really want to be more accurate in your usage, but I'm glad you're using your words more properly. Now remember, we're lame, but that doesn't mean gay. there are plenty of unlame gay people.

  • @gryphern - I would suspect he knows all about being gay, what with his username being "spandex king"...

  • @gryphern Actually gay means happy. It became a euphemism for homosexual and became so prevalent that we've all come to accept that gay means homosexual. Now some have decided that gay means lame. Personally, I don't see how either happy or homosexual are synonymous with lame, but considering the sort of people who generally use the word gay to mean lame, I don't suppose it really has to make much sense.

Now I have to go try to make some of these for my kid.

  • @spandexxking

I'm gay, and I don't have any stilts like these.

    YOUR THEORY IS FLAWED.

  • are those comfortilbul

  • That's so cool

    I want some lol

  • dont feel bad. my nabers wander what the heel we're doing alot ^,...,^ my friends and i randomly go plases dressed in costume.

  • man i have been trying to think of ways to make stilts like this and you guys have made them so simplified! You my friends, are awesome!!

  • i love how your voice kinda "curls" when you say digitgrade <3

  • where do i buy the leg supports or how do i make them? also, does it matter if i put the pivot point toward the back of the side of the board instead of under the heel?

  • hey, i got some oak that's only 1/3 of an inch thick, if i reinforce the bottoms of the backs foot boards then will that be sufficent? also, how did you get a straight angle on the ends of your boards?

  • Hey this is the guy from one of the response videos... My suit is nearly finished. Will post a vid soon enough :P

The stilts still work fine btw.

  • @Lairnaedon Can't wait to see!!!! Really interested how you decide to use stilts with your costume, skinning them is something we're still learning about.

  • hahahah nice. very creative.

  • put a block of wood on the front of the toe to help hold you up and also add some rubber on the bottom to help prevent slipping around

  • could you send me a rough blue print to these? plz

  • Check out the book and the sizing video, the 3D models in the book are great layouts and the sizing videos shows you how to get the lengths for your custom stilts.

  • Dear madam, these are amazing stilts. I am very impressed!

Now I have another thing to bring up:

A friend of mine pointed me to your video, apparently he thought it was me talking. And after hearing your voice...yes I do believe that we sound eerily similar.

I'm a voice actor by trade, and cosplayer by habit. Nice to hear you.

  • I have made some, and they are realy good. ^^

I have to change some little things, but that's not a problem.

    Nice video. ^^

  • "...and those are our neighbors, wondering what the HELL are we doing?"

    XD

    ~

    DANG those are AMAZING!

i want to make some now! OwO

  • what are the dimesions of the triangular

    pieces?

  • Check out the "sizing werewolf stilts" video for how to determine piece sizes, and the "Making digitigrade stilts" book. The book offers lots of detail for designing, and the sizing video shows a simple way of figuring out dimensions.

  • how are your knees?

  • "And those are our neighbors wondering what the hell we're doing." LMFAO! :P

  • did you win?

  • Yeah, 200 bucks!

  • Do these hurt your legs? I am going to use them in my dragon costume (quad).

  • Very cool. Are they comfortable to walk or run in? Could you wear them for a llong time; say, a full convention (about three or four hours)? Do you have any kind of plans or blueprints or something?

  • ya can't really run in them...but ya can wear them for a good couple hours.

  • crow feather is correct! running is riskinga fall, but we've pulled off sprints for sacring people--but waxed or super smooth floors prevent safe running. We padded Ben with foam and had him run on linolium until he fell. He ran about 5 times and on the fifth time slid into a wall, butt first, which was hilarious if only because he was padded.

  • what if you put some kind of rubber grip on the bottoms? shoes, crutches, wheel chairs etc all have some sort of grip to prevent sliding. i dont know how hard it would be to do it though.

Another thing to try is some way to lengthen the arms so you could both walk upright or on all fours.. lol i never liked the way the movies made werewolves get around all hunched over and arthritic looking.. and yet they are super strong. if you run like they do you'll hit your head on something or get tired!

  • In the book and in the comments there's good discussion on treads. The traction-bottom flip flops are my preference, but ping pong paddle rubber, bicycle tries, and others have been suggested.

Even good treads can't grip a freshly waxed or wetted linoleum surface.

  • i'll give it a look then. i've only just discovered this recently via deviantart lol

i think most things have a problem with waxed or smooth floors ;) my dog has big feet and even he runs in place on our kitchen floor lol

  • i spy with my little eye a DC

  • Very nice...

  • good job :-D

  • Those stilts would be so awesome for a Sangheili (the Elites from the Halo universe) constume. So much cooler than a werewolf. Of course, the neck would be a little difficult... So would the hands, since the Sangheili have four fingered hands with two thumbs and two index fingers, but I'm sure it would all be doable if you put enough thought into it. Damn, I wanna see a costume like that. Might even make one myself some day.

  • i finished mine, now all i have to do is fur them :D thank you so much for the help n.n

  • WIN!!!

  • LOVE EM! Thanks!

  • Great job! :D

  • thank so much for showwing me i made my own ones i didnt need the supports though

  • nice!

  • does it hurt when you walking on them for an extended period of time?

  • read the book in more info section for detailed experiences by four stilt makers

  • nice.

  • great job even makes that klank noise

  • Ive got a vid now for my pair could you watch it and give me some comments?

  • YES.

  • O-e okay nvm-totally broke atm- but thanx anyway xD

  • Did you think she was going to do it for free or something? That's an awful lot of work , it's kinda stupid to think she would just make you a pair for free.

  • Though--never underestimate your ability to manipulate a local art student into making you something at their own cost so they can get a good grade... (Coff Coff)

  • Hah XD But then it's a situation of "Sure you can have them when I'm done BUT! You have to hold still for me while I make them/I get to push you over to make sure they don't sprain ankles!" 8D

Basically you are a guinea pig

  • could u just make a pair and sell them to me lol im so lazy x,x

  • skeletons are $200 per pair plus shipping.

  • so how do you make and construct these stilts?

  • 1. google search for the how-to book

    2. click "more information" for a link to the how-to book

    3. visit my homepage/channel for a link to the how-to book that is all.

  • Beautiful work of engineering. :D

  • are the shoes themselves in some way glued/bolted to the ... stilt?

  • Read the book and watch the "padding the werewolf shoes" video for all your needs!

  • My dad's considering making me a pair of these, but I have to ask...given that I'm a clumsy person, say that we make these exactly the way you made your's. What are the chances that I'd lose balance and fall?

  • If you fall down it'll be backward, not sideways (FYI) the taller the stilts the easier it is to lose balance. in the gargoyle stilt video I demonstrate falling backward in them (this was a video I sent to a client) and you see it's no big thang. In the werewolf stilts, which are really tall you fall backwards you're more likely to end up on your butt than the back of the stilts.

  • I saw the gargoyle video, that was pretty cool and seemed safe. We might have to shorten the stilts when we make them, more like the gargoyle ones, because mom's already complaining and saying she isn't taking me to the hospital if I fall in them XD

  • Because of the metal braces that have a little bit of twisting freedom give due to the multiple metal washers was you're very unlikely to twist or break your ankle and we haven't suffered any knee strain, even running up a hill and falling on your butt. What we found was by putting a good layer of "werewolf padding" made of foam in the lower back of the costume Ben could voluntarily fall and not bruise himself (yeah we tested what it would take to hurt ourselves.)

  • Awesome, so even if I did fall it doesn't sound like I'd get hurt too badly...that's a plus. Thanks :D

  • Haha, and those are our neighbors wondering what the hell we're doing. XD

  • lol u put the thing on the heal but the hinged part is rly clanky

  • Okay I'll use the triangles instead of a block I'm thinking of just cussing the triangles out of a piece of plywood.... And of I put the foot farther away from the triangles won't it make it hard to balance?

  • Balance is a little more difficult when you make them taller, but balance is mainly a factor placing the human foot over the stilt's floor plate. Many designs where the human foot is mounted far behind the costume foot lead to the stilt walking on its back edge unless you pay attention and balance each of your footsteps.

  • Just finished my stilts (rough) today and have to thank you for your videos! Your Profile Quote made me stop and really think about trying this project out.

To all, yes there are measurements, adjustments and re-measurements, but that shouldn't stop you from trying.

  • Okay just downloaded the book and have two more questions does the angle of the foot affect how tall they make you and instead of using two triangles for the bottom of the foot would it be better if I just used a piece of 4x4 cut at an angle?

  • How tall you make them is based on how long you make the foot plate and what angle you use. The angle can help add height more quickly, so a long foot plate at a large angle would give a very steep and tall stilt, while a small angle and a short footplate would give a very shallow and short stilt. The solid 4 X 4 piece would work, but would add extra weight. A heavy stilt hurts the knees, but if you're big and strong you might not notice the solid block.

  • Okay just downloaded the book just wondering does the angle of the foot affect how tall they make you and

  • what angle did you put the triangles at?

  • ON WHAT AXIS? (J/k, read the book, there's detailed 3D illustrations in it)

  • is this kinda like wearing large heels?

  • sort of? It's definitely like stilts, you get the sense of balancing up high, but the bungees pull you back up, so it's both tiring and supportive at the same time. There's a collection of stilt experiences in the book in the more info section.

  • does this require a lot of balancing?

  • I'd love to be your neighbor, those digiti grade legs are epic..

(I'd usually say something funny but they are just too awesome..)

  • the reason he can walk upright so good is because he has alot of practice in high heels

  • WEREWOLF STILETTOS

  • lmao at 1:02

  • Genius!
