  • Definately Neil Peart. Mike Portnoy may have gone to Berklee, but Neil didn't go to any music college. They're both equally talented, but I'd have to say Peart takes the cake

  • mike

  • And the winner is Hellhammer.

  • mike portnoy is a great drummer... that being said he could not even carry neils sticks to the rush show. the professor is in a class of his own and has no equal on the skins.

  • @horrorshow5659 Right on the money.

  • I like how he took away the vote down button soon after the audio got stripped.

  • Sound Fail.... Hudson Music Wins! Fatality!

  • why would u put a video on youtube with no audio when u judge by sound retard...its these people that are gonna make us get passed up by mexacans

  • There is no audio and i still say neil peart

  • I am sure this would be something if it still had audio.

  • I photographed Rush in 74 and 77. To see the shots go to ianmarkmusicphotos (.com)

  • Peart has proven more versatile than Portnoy. Mike can come up with technical licks, but Peart is better at improv.

  • neil peart is and will always be the best ever

  • <3

  • no hace falta audio con solo ver al maestro peart madreando tambores es suficiente, al portnoy es al que le hace falta audio es asqueroso solo verlo

  • Ah whatever.What a waste.

  • neil peart undoubtedly best drummer of all times

  • @CHEATERSNFSU2 i agree 2,876,592%

  • Neil is the best!

  • Neil always, this should not exist please.

  • Peart wins, even if the audio is off. No questions asked.

  • By the way..way to compare yourself against Neil in his 50's?You got him there, pat yourself on the back...Compare yourself on the Signals tour,Grace Under Pressure Power Windows....Please...When neil is drumming from his coffin is the only time you can compare

  • Its Neil Peart Vs Buddy Rich..Thats it

  • Neil wins. No comparison and no argument.

  • Peart Wins, I didnt even have to hear anything lol.

  • Hard, really hard but I gotta choose Neil over Mike because you know...

As much as I like Dream Theater, Rush is one of favorite bands so...

Besides John Bonham and Neil Peart inspired me to play drums.

  • take t[his off dude!!! NO NEED FOR IT NOW!!!!!

  • 872 people are into John Cage's "'4'33".

  • Fuck copyright!

  • hmmmmmmm..........

  • I am the biggest DT fan (In méxico at least) i love every part of Mike Portnoy' s work and I listened to Rush since my childhood (by my father and uncles influence) Neal Peart is a MAESTRO!!! he makes the better solos and Portnoy admires him, Dream Theater have big Rush influence in fact, but there is no point of comparison, i mean no competition, each one have thier own place in the Drummers universe,

  • well i like portnoy especially after that nightmare album with a7x (AM I RIGHT!?) but set aside skill/chops think of the thought process that went into making these hard fills, drum solo's and songs, honestly my mind can't process how much he must have though to make songs such as villa strangiato, yyz, or the camera eye, i could go into more detail but im not that bored

  • @therevengeofficial Well, the work that he did on Nightmare was pretty good, but 99% of it wasn't his. Plus that album wasn't even the half of what he did with DT.

  • Portnoy looks up to Peart, but Portnoy is my favorite in terms of what he plays. However, me being a drummer I cannot disagree when someone says Peart is one of a kind.

  • There is no competition here. Peart is a drop in the ocean that is Portnoy's talent.

  • @jedphelym you gotta be kidding me. I mean, it's alright if you prefer Portnoy, but seriously Peart is much more than that! in fact, he is one of the biggest influences on Portnoy. I believe Peart is much better, but still dude you are so off.......are you a drummer? cause seriously that's a no-no.

  • Neil wins, not by much but he wins (btw none of them are overrated, they are both the best of the best when it comes to drums regardless of genre or style)

  • OMG!!!! HELP!!! SOMEBODY!!! I THINK I'VE GONE DEAF!!! I CAN'T HEAR IT!! AHHHHH

  • Neil's the man!

  • Visit our channel: prog band: grantorinoProg!

  • peart is awsome stop hatin

  • Seems like they're not playing loud enough.

  • THIS FUCKING SUCKS - I think I will go illegally DOWN LOAD some music! Fuck you faggots!

  • @porkythepig007

I wish people would stop taking out their hatred for record companies on the artists. When you download something illegally, you're taking money out of the artists' pockets. People have a right to copyright their works ... and you'd want the fruits of your labor copyrighted too, if you were in the artists' shoes.

  • @shammadamma - I'll bet you think global warming is something the Libs "made up" too...

  • FUCK YOU COPYRIGHTS! NOW I CANT LISTEN THEM.

  • Screw copyright!

  • it would be nice to have the audio. But it's only sugestion.

  • You can't compare them, completely different styles, though i'd rather say Neil if you have to choose.

  • This video has one mistake.. COMPARING NEIL PEART AND MIKE PORTNOY!!!!!

Both are very good drummers but Neil has an big edge over Mike. The main reason is because if you told Neil Peart to play a few of Mike's songs, he would be able to do it without a problem. But, if you told Mike to play Neil Peart's songs, he would NOT be able to. No disrespect to Mike, I love his songs, especially "Pull Me Under." Very awesome and difficult drumming.

  • @RushTimeMachineTour yeah but you don't really actually know that at all. Mike does crazier things than Neil, I doubt you are right about that whole thing.....

  • Mike Portnoy all the way!! Much more creative and he has that metal edge as well. Neil has never touched down on metal drumming and thats what prevents him from being well seasoned. The older crowd will pick Neil, but look at Neil's most difficult drum pieces and look at Mike's...Neil never wrote a piece like the Dance of Eternity or Metropolis or heaviness such as A nightmare to remember or panic attack.. just my thoughts though

  • both are awesome

  • want to comment? idiot

  • Sweet jesus WMG is an insufferable company

  • Well I have always been a Rush fan, but this is solely because of Peart! As a drum lover I must admit I do love me some Mike. I think what differs in my opinion than the other posts is that I like the overall sound of Dream Theater better than the overall sound of Rush, mainly due to my dislike of Geddy's voice (not lyrics). Drums rock!

  • dude who the hell would compare these two??

    they both ROCK

    compare peart to barker.

  • there is no contest. Peart kicks Portnoys ass nine ways to sunday.

  • @jgeorgel I love early dream theater (till about 1995) but I'll have to agree here.

portnoy is way overrated and if you have heard the progressive rock bands from the past , you will see portnoy employs a lot from all from them and that too pretty directly.

To my eyes portnoy is the less original & complex version of neil peart.

Not to mention that he's a mind blower as well. But when serious, artistic, original drumming is concerned, I wouldn't talk that much about portnoy.

  • Also: For you annoying obsessed fanboy and girls, it's sickening that you Peart is the best. Look up Buddy rich, Tony Royster Jr, Dennis Chambers, David Garibaldi, Steve Gadd.

Portnoy is better because he has more feel in a song, he does the job of what a drummer should do. He doesn't flash around trying to be the star. Rudimentally, he's faster than Neil, plus he incorporates single and double bass into his music; Neil is good also don't get me wrong, just not better.

  • @Craziness31 Tony Royster is an overrated new age hip hop guy, I love most of his drumming dont get me wrong but he's not good enough to be name dropped as one of the best when there's guys like thomas lang, johnny raab, gene krupa, marco minnemann and as you said Buddy Rich and Steve Gadd(should be pronounced god hahah)

  • @espChris93 Tony is overrated at all, he's one of the best and there's no denying it, he's not just some "hip hop" drummer just because he drums with Jay Z.

  • @espChris93 Tony is pretty much up their with them in my book. Maybe I don't know enough to recognize it but these guys are so good you never know who's better unless you ask them yourself.

  • Obviously Portnoy.

And who cares if Neil played before, it doesn't make him better.

  • @Craziness31 lmfao

  • neil

  • @TheMetalyankee I'm agree with you!

  • Now what is the sense of having a video on here if the audio has been disabled??????

  • @nailers99 See the add in the corner, every view is making them money...

  • its hilarious how people decide that since peart played before hes automatically better because OH SHIT he influenced portnoy, rofl thats so stupid, its kinda like saying OH SHIT page destroys petrucci cause he came first and influenced petrucci, i have a lot of respect for peart, portnoy and peart have a lot of respect for each other, but heres what it comes down to, its what u like more.. to the fucking idiots saying OH WELL if u ask mike hed admit peart is better and his master, he WONT at al

  • @markgk89 peart is better so get over it.

  • @markgk89 But tell me, whos greater (won't use better cause there's no better or worse in art)? The one that created a style and sound or the one that took that and developed in his own way?

  • Portnoy is an awsome drummer but neal Peart is the best drummer to ever bang skins no question , ps danny carey is better than portnoy hahaha

  • Neil is way better, and underrated, and portnoy is overrated ... (come on i'm waiting for mad reactions)

  • if it wansnt for neil there would be no portnoy, or any of the good drummers today he is the influence. if you ask any decent drummer in rock they would agree

  • both r my favorites....Neil Peart is Portnoy's master.

  • 1. There would be no Portnoy if it wasn't for Peart.

    2. Portnoy is a drooling fan boy of Peart.

    3. You will never see Peart playing a Dream Theatre tune.

    4. You will never see Peart playing a replica Portnoy TAMA kit.

    5. Red Lenses. Any questions?

  • @Cash2112 yeah and i wouldnt see buddy rich playing pearts stuff? does that make peart a drooling fanboy? i dont think so. change the way you think.

  • @abhimuscat The truth is sometimes painful; this is ***Peart vs. Portnoy***, not Buddy Rich.

  • @Cash2112 so your thankful this isnt a rich vs peart contest because then peart would be the loser???

respect all musicians man!!! they are definitely way better than you and I.

    cheers

  • @abhimuscat Speak for yourself fanboy, musicians are definitely not better than me. Portnoy is an admitted alcoholic.

  • @Cash2112 hmm that further proves that you are not an open minded musician. what does the fact of being an alcoholic got to do with ones skills??? thats lame man.

  • @abhimuscat Spoken like a true substance abuser. . .

  • @Cash2112 dude instead of insulting everyone, why cant you just respect both musicians?? maybe to you portnoy isnt any good in front of peart but still he is a wonderful prog drummer, at least accept that. i dont want to create any further arguments. cheers. p.s. i am a hindu so my parents would rather boil me alive than to even go near alcohol, cigaretters, drugs, and even meat!!!! just so you know!!

  • @Cash2112 Um, actually Neil Peart had nothing to do with Portnoy coming out of the womb of his own mother.

  • mike!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The way I see it is: Rush started it; Dream Theater perfected it

  • The audio has been disabled by fags.

  • I absolutely love MP. But NP plays a better drum solo. MP has the better band.

  • There wouldn't be a Mike Portnoy if it weren't for Neal Peart.

  • @MrChrisTheDrummer Damn right about that! NP blazed the trail for many of todays drummers.just like im sure the influence he recieved from drummers before him. Thats how it works.Whos the best? Its all a matter of preference. But NP and probably carl palmer started it all.

  • Even though Rush is my favorite band. Dream Theater is my second, so both win along with Alan White and Terry Bozzio. Long live prog, and R.I.P Frank Zappa.

  • ya see, the thing about mike portnoy v. neil peart is that they are different era's in music..i guarenttee you that if mike portnoy was playing back in the 70's when Rush started, that no one would even know mike portnoy...neil peart is the reason mike portnoy is around, if not for neil, there is no mike, its as simple as that

  • @220friend Well said.

  • The Rev

  • NEVER COMPARE! Different ppl! They are both Gods! Neil is one of Mike's idols.

  • Technically speaking and being a drum machine, Portnoy. In terms of being a well-rounded, passionate, inspirational and overall an amazing individual, Neil Peart winds hands down. Don't hate Dream Theater, just know that they are now wanna-be metal sell outs, and Portnoy's presence says nothing other than "I'm okay with changing to please." Neil Peart evolves-- he doesn't change who he is or what his music is, he just improves.

  • @AFallenLord Well said.

  • i personally think neil is the more overatted. in skill, imo, i'm goin with mike.

  • who gives a shit their both amazing.

  • I Love'em both. I think Rush is king but Dream Theater is the only other band that exites me in the same way. I would love to see them tour together and play eachothers songs. I could die happy.

  • It's really unnecessary to compare both drummers who have an experience gap of 10+ years, even if Peart is innovative during his time. Who knows what MP will be after 15 years compared to Peart.

Btw, using the word "overrated" is a wrong form of criticism. Instead of saying the pros and cons of each artist, one just opts to use the word "overrated". If you dislike an artist, tell the people what you don't like about them. Ratings don't really mean anything if you really like the artist.

  • Although I love Mike and Dream Theater, Neil takes this one. Even Mike would agree that Neil takes it. They are both great drummers and have their own styles.

    \m/(>.<)\m/

  • Definitly Mike Portnoy For Me

  • Peart, hands down. Portnoy is typical percussive "banging around." Peart is the only drummer with a true melodic sound to his solos. You can actually "hum" them, his solos are true songs. NOONE else does that.

  • has anyone noticed that there arent any good drummers anymore, the only good ones, are the people that have been around for longer than 30 years, portnoy is good, but obviously neil has more experience and also was role model for mike, also i dont know any drummer that has actually defined their style like neil has, hes just beyond professional, he probably has achieved god status as a drummer

  • @EZCreepin What are you talking about?... There are lots of great drummers. Shannon Lucas is good, Dave Lombardo is good.

  • i mean like bands that are rated like rush, led zeppelin, etc. most of the bands that are coming out are fag bands and they simply dont play anything complicated, its so frustrating

  • @Ryu12543 yes they are verrry good rummers. but those are drummers that are more speed based not technicality based. and throw george kollias in those 2 names and you are very correct. they are good drummers speed wise. but cant live up to the technicality of neil and mike.

  • @raptorjesus223 Yeah same with Inferno of Behemoth. My favorite drummer is Neil Peart, but for metal I love Shannon Lucas as number 2, and Dave Lombardo as 3.

  • @Ryu12543 nice choice in favorite drummer. i think mine is mike.

  • I like them both, but I grew up on Rush, and I think Neil is more of a technician.

  • Peart spawned Portnoy. We all know who's better.

  • Its pretty easy to tell apart the drummers from the people who just listen to music on here. The drummers aren't the ones with the "skills=double bass speed" comments. My vote goes to Mr. Peart.

  • No audio, copyright problems!!

    PEART, PEART, PEART

  • PEART !!! Mike is an excellent drummer, it just depends on the style you like. Also, depending on your taste and maturity level, Neil has a lot more class and doesn't act like the crazy rock star.

  • Neil Peart . . .Duh!

  • george/derek

  • Mike is overrated. Great drummer but there are many better than him. His double bass technique isn't that great: only single strokes and no flams, paradiddles and other rudiments. Listen to Mike Mangini, Gene Hoglan, Virgil Donati, Bobby Jarzombek, Tomas Haake, Simon Phillips, Deen Castronovo, Jimmy DeGrasso, Mike Terrana, Thomas Lang, Richard Christy they are among the best double pedal players in rock/metal music.

  • @ter50 yeah but mikes ability to play odd times is unparalleled, and none of drummers u mentioned make the drums sound like a melodic instrument, portnoy does.

  • mike is way overrated. he keeps playing to music where he should not be constantly making music. the rest of the band is not playing to a point where he can be just showing off all the time. hes a good drummer, but he needs to shut up at some point. neil all the way. best drummer in the world hands down.

  • @slappythepirate7 u r a fuckin retard and hav no idea wat u are talking about there are dream theater songs that go 5 mins without drums. mike is not a show off. if u consider him a show off then u would hav to consider petrucci a show off as well along with rudess so go suck dick

  • both are amazing, but I prefer portnoy simply for his style of music. For those who are debating it, there can be no clear cut answer. This is like trying to decide which painting is better. It's all art, and all forms of expression. It's not like a race, there can be no clear cut winner.

  • @GhostOps055 I agree with you. Nobody can say one person is better than another, it's just a matter of taste. But they are BOTH really great drummers.

  • drums-Neil Peart over mike portnoy

Guitar- John Petrucci over Alex Lifeson

    Bass-Geddy Lee over John Myung

    Synth-Jordan Rudess over Geddy Lee

    Vocals-Geddy Lee over James LaBrie

  • you cant even compare the two, they play two different kinds of music they are both excellent and succsessful musicians

  • peart, the Professor !!!

  • no anda el audio

  • Portnoy is an amazing drummer, and one who would slaughter just about anyone in another useless youtube segment of "Which drummer is better."

However, God goes to Neil Peart for drum lessons, so I gotta go Peart on this one too!

  • LMFAO!!! Neil vs?????? Who??? ROFL!! Never heard of the worthless fucker! There is NO "Neil vs ANYONE"!

  • Neil is a whole drum legend

  • Mike is a great drummer, probably the best drummer in metal. However, he doesn't come close to being better than Neil. Both of them rock though. :D

  • Without Neil Pert there is no Portnoy

  • @bonxobonxo I was gonna post something. But you summed up the most valid point for my argument. Neil Peart hands down.

  • neil peart all the way

  • While Mike is still my favourite drummer by a million miles, I have to say that Peart is possibly the best drummer ever, and not a lot of people even compare to his technical fluency, his percussional skills and his creativity in general. Usually this would be the bit where I would say Mike Portnoy shits all over his rival, such as Danny Carey, but, Peart is God, and Portnoy is Jesus. Peart's my vote.

  • Portnoy is great, but Neil Peart was like his teacher so I think Peart wins this one but I dont know why I think Portnoy plays excellent

  • Peart.

  • i think the sound really doesnt say much but look at the facial expression niels face is plain wich means he really isnt trying and mike is trying his hardest and niel played a looooooottttttttttttt better Niel puts the DRUM in DRUMMING

  • I like them both but Portnoy took this for me.

  • i like mikes style better but neil still wins.

  • Neil Peart acctually taught Mike, thought to let every one know

  • @DreamTheaterJuIy3 really!?

  • neil wins, i dont even need to watch this

  • Mike could not wax Neil's set No CONTEST

  • I think Portnoy is very good (though a little overrated) but Peart is more accomplished and versatile imo.

  • hahaha absolutely no comparison..peart influenced portnot

  • "NOTICE This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by all copyright holders. The audio has been disabled."

    LAME!!

  • I have huge respect for peart, but I enjoy portnoy much more.

  • i love both, but i choose portnoy

  • @biopsychosocio

Ur right...neil dont stand up evey minute for an applause from crowd...

but that doesnt mean Mike is worthless...both are the best drummers ever alive...v must respect them

  • Mike P is the biggest fan of Neil there is... just sayin

  • @woodgateski o that is true xP(los qemo a todos xD)

  • You suck the bad plus drummer's ass! Neil is king!

  • dude wtf i'd like to see you drum better than them!

  • there should be no vs here

  • Not even worth commenting but I will. Neil is the greatest drummer alive since Buddy's passing. Mike Porksword is bland. Souless. Emotionless. Boring. Leaves me cold. I really -and I mean REALLY - cannot see what the fuss is about with Portnoy. He idolises Neil, always has, he's even done the tribute to Neil and Rush.

You also don't see Neil standing up in spandex every few seconds to get crowd applause during a solo.

  • so? i agree, Neil is the better out of the 2, but no one cares about your opinion if you're a hater... and i'd like to see you do better than Mike.

  • NEIL ALL THE WAY

  • Portnoy suits my tastes better

  • Neil Peart is old. He's 57.

  • I have to give the edge to Peart. He's been playing to progressive rock for well over 20 years. Rush is possibly the tightest trio(The Police Too!) you will ever hear, and Neil's drumming was pure precision. Nothing else would have sufficed. Portnoy's got chops for sure, but I don't think you can rate him above a legend like Neil. Just my opinion. Guys that like harder stuff will disagree.

  • Right, but if you take Panic Attack or Honor Thy Father and compare it to YYZ or something, they aren't quite similar, except the fact they have the same instruments. So I'm gonna say that Mike plays Rock and Neil plays a Jazz-rock kinda thing.

  • @NamesWasted I'd say more like Neil doing a progressive rock thing and Mike a progressive metal thing.

  • @eNSWE

You're right; they are both different styles but common.

  • When I say different styles, I mean the way of play and music. Both drummers got their talents in different music types, thus comparing isn't ideal.

  • No comparison, as awesome as Mike is he's no Neil Peart. I may be a bit byas because Rush is my favorite band, but Neil is in a class by himself. Simply the most awesome rock drummer ever , Long Live "the professor on the drum kit!!"

  • MIKE PORTNOY ALL THE WAY

  • you sir ..are full of shit..beyond ...you are stupid and have no idea what you are talking about. If Peart wasnt around ..Portnoy wouldnt know how to play or even set up his drum kit. It is OBVIOUS Peart is HIS idol. Ask him...He will tell you. Dumbass.

  • that was for OzzyNCslasher...a dumbass

  • As a soloist, Neil is a better performer than Mike. Neil's solos are always very well crafted and musical. In a band context, I prefer Mike's playing. I think he's more adventurous than Neil is and Mike has shown that he can play in many styles.

  • i think sandybill is spot on. but they both amazing! my favorite two bands

  • Niels training is very deep. Portnoy is also trained but not to the extent of Niel. Both drummers have their perks beyond the stick. Portnoy is the founder of super band Dream Theater, Niel is the Lyricist for super band Rush. Portnoy has more speed and Niel more precision. Niel blended classic rock and Big Band Jazz with technical prowess, Mike blended all of the late era drum gods to include Niel and put it into overdrive. They Both Rule. I prefer Niel and respect both of them.

  • mIKE IS OVERRATTED

    long live peart!!!!

  • @cisrael468 cant agree with that statement... Peart and Portnoy are up there with Bonham, Mangini, Lombardo, Moon, etc no overrated one's here like NamesWasted said overthere different styles, brilliant nonetheless
