His record is average because his style is not well suited to K1 fights where they score namby pamby jabs about the same as leg kicks and his amazing back and back spin kicks. He could land 3-4 good shots with those kicks that his opponent will be feeling for the next 2 weeks, but will still lose on points if he gets tagged a lot with leg kicks and jabs.

The only reason people choose muay thai is because it's so simple to pick up. Anything that's simple to pick up IS GOING TO ATTRACT A LOT OF PEOPLE, which is what's happening in K-1. Taekwondo requires more intelligence and practice. Muay Thai is NOT more effective than Wushu or Taekwondo. This has never been proven. If anything Shotokan has defeated Muay Thai.

It's silly to argue who is TKD and who isn't. He started in TKD and became a master of WTF TKD. But as any good fighter, he developed, added weapons to his arsenal and grew as a fighter. I'm sure he can do as well in TKD competitions as K1. He just had to adjust. Most good born fighters adjust to rules, are not afraid of hard work, and have that fighting spirit to adjust.

that depends on the fighter and how s/he uses it. your recommendation or opinion isn't absolute for everyone. the acrobatics have their time and place, like in demos or WTF sparring. but actual "combat TKD", for lack of a better term, is pretty serious business.

A mix is never a good thing. It's more advantageous to devote time to sharpening one style. Most Muay Thai guys in K-1 like Hoost, Badr, and Overeem never do karate or Taekwondo, and yet they're successful. There goes your theory.

Andy Hug's training was 95% Kyokushin with little to no Muay Thai training.

And when Park Yong Soon started mixing styles, HE GOT WORSE. There goes your theory again. Styles were meant to be separate from eachother.

I'm just spreading the truth and wishing that the Korean TKD practitioners would stop being shy, timid wimps, and just go into MMA or K-1 since TKD is an effective style and more exciting to watch than Muay Thai & Boxing. It's so sad that an ugly, rigid style with no belt system is taking over K-1 & MMA. @kumitetom In my Tae Kwon Do school it isn't the sport TKD they teach. True Tae Kwon Do is much more versatile. I'm taught ground fighting, joint locks, in addition to the kicks. This includes elbows, knees... All I'm saying is Tae Kwon Do is not limited like you might think. I have trained Tae Kwon Do for six years and I can tell you from experience that Muay Thai is vicious is brutal but is still limited and it isn't anymore effective if not less effective than TKD.

@Cian130 i think every martial art has good things. if u look at the figures though in K1 and MMA, muay thai is generally the most used. however there aren't really many PURE one style fighters. most take from all styles. most people start with a traditional martial art like tkd or karate, but to be versatile u need some boxing and muay thai. if u look at Serkan Yilmaz, his stance and boxing, he looks like a muay thai fighter who then does a 360 tornado super spin kick every now and then.

@tkddiuryl Hey, I do ITF taekwondo. I've busted up some MT guys in my time. I'll admit, lost a few to them as well. But do what style and art you want. Might need to modify it some to get it to work, though. Practice your Taekwondo by sparring against Muay Thai guys in their rules. It'll be difficult at first, but you'll get it. Start mixing what they teach you in self defense with the sport style. Apply it, and you'll find what works and what doesn't in Taekwondo.

This guys is a TKD guy. But to say that this is TKD winning in KI and Muay Thai events is just WRONG. Serkin cross trained in Muay Thai for years. He also boxed. Every time a WTF TKD guy purist was asked to fight in Muay Thai, he lost (unless he cross trained in leg kicks, boxing, and knees)

A fighter is a fighter. A true warrior always adds weapons to his arsenal. I have seen WTF guys who are done competing take up Muay Thai and BJJ. I have seen some later get that same urge to compete and fight (it's almost genetic) and go out to compete in grappling. But if a fighter is not interested in growing, he/she will just stick to their own style and not develope as a well rounded martial artist.
