Jerry Garcia was the world's greatest singer, song writer, & guitar player! No one and I mean NO ONE, including Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, etc, has inspired an entire musical style (Jam) and an entire lifestyle. Jerry has paved the way for countless other musicians who want to emulate his style and make it their own. Let His Memory Shine!

Come join us on the island to celebrate Jerry Garcia's birthday. Google Island in the Mountains Fest for more information.
Warren Hayes is an excellent guitarist and soloist but , when I saw him with the Dead it sounded exactly like what it was, a really good rock/blues player playing with the Dead without Jerry. It's not the same....and no, it doesn't get to the beautiful place. If borntrippin thinks it does then he hasn't ever been there! fool!
Some of Jerry playing just had a very beautiful feel, something no one else has! Warren Haynes does a good job, but never gets to that beautiful place!
His tone is built into the Guitar! did you notice! these guy's had didgital processors built into the axes in 1971... way ahead of the common technology. look into it if you think i'm full of shit.
There are players, like Jerry, JJ Cale, Duane, Santana, Bill Kirchen, etc. for whom the tone is not in the axe, it's in their touch. It doesn't matter if they are playing electric or acoustic or their custom or a stock guitar. Listen to other clips of Jerry on YouTube jumping on stage with Los Lobos playing Hildago's LP, or a borrowed Fender JazzMaster with Sammy Hagar . Also JG on his D18 on Bromberg's Demon in Disguise and a vintage Gibson L5 w/ Grisman: one note and you know.
@coraxcorax7 yes, true but he has guitars that are made for specific tone, I have heard dead songs for 30 years I've proabably heard enough to know, he has Doug Irwin guitars, and they all have different tones for different applications. I play a Ludwig 6 1/2 inch supraphonic snare chromed metal shell with the top head cranked way tight. it sounds like me because I play it all the time, and when i play a 3 1/2 inch maple shell pearl i will sound different. My approach will be me but! the tone.
One of Jerry's guitars, Alembic #72-13 nickname Lucky #13 will be auctioned for charity on eBay starting June 5, 2011 at 7PM PST and will end on June 12th at 7PM PST. Lots of photos and all the info you need about the charity auction on the website jerrygarciaguitar
Jerry was the greatest! I had the great privilege to make eye contact with him for a few seconds during the last night of the Alexandra Palace gigs, London 1974 when I was on the front barrier. His music is immortal, and I have learnt to play many of his songs, they have true soul; Jerry and the Dead have made the world a different and a better place.
no one will ever play this like jerry i mean that because music has already died why else are people who claim to be artist getting paid becuase anyfuckingperson who enjoys pop country new shit dose not know music there are very few exceptions in new music but it is not on the radio so fuck anyone hatin on JERRY every one of yous can suck it fuck off and die with your lame perspective on everything that is your pathetic sad life and dont even comment your that im drunk i love this song
Thank you this video brought tears to my eyes. I am only 26 years old - got into Grateful Dead music around 2002 when I was in high school. I listen to it now every day at least. I try to listen to 1 show a day If I can. I play GD music for my girlfriend and her kid. He's 5 years old and sings along to Fire on the Mountain and Candyman, My point with this rant - as long as the music lives on Jerry will never die. There's no way he's dead...I'm listening to him right now!
In 1972 Jerry played around with Merle Saunders. Saw him in Atlanta in a very small bar. When heading to the bthrm down a back hallway I heard him warming up. There I was, 20, and standing on the other side of the door with the star on it. No security. no bs. just jerry playing. Too young to knock on the door...next time!
@JByrdo29, y00n1x, smithsmithit, et al, I was joking, and I hope my comment did not come off as offensive. I guess addiction is serious business. I so often see the subject of drugs come up when Jerry Garcia is mentioned, that I wouldnt mind if that were the truth. Of course, it is not. Now, as for the gong show producer mr barris, I can't say whether or not his CIA agent claims about himself are true, but Jerry was not involved. Peace.
Someone who was part of the Grisman/Garcia project ended up with 1 of his acoustic guitars after his death. I played it for about 2 minutes ( a couple badly interpreted Jerry riffs) and I spooked myself because it was a guitar he recorded with and the tone i heard before coming from the speakers was now coming from the soundhole! I wasnt too familiar with his work at the time in '95 so it wasnt an awestruck thing just kind of surreal. I laugh about it now but wow what a trip!
@geoff5665 Jerry's guitars are still ahead of their time, if a little too percussive for the average player. I once read in these comments, someone said his guitars were half banjo, and that still rings true today.
I have never heard of a band play like jerry garcia or some other greats. This guy right here is next to all the other great guitarists that should still be alive to this day but sadly there not :'(. R.I.P Jerry
P.S for a backstage warmup that was good if only the whole song was recorded
I miss you Jerr bear... what an amazing guy, your gone but no where near forgotten, and if someones like fuck jerry garcia, than forget them!! they obviously don't know what they're talking about. it's real annoying to hear people talk shit about great musicians, whats way worse is when they don't even listen to the people they talk shit about and big deal if he did drugs. out of all the musicians I like it's hard to say which ones didn't use drugs. who cares a long as musics good!?!
Crazy Fingers. Regarding comments about drugs: mr Garcia never touched illicit drugs after he quit pot in 1971. Because of the sensitive and secret work he did with TV game show mogul Chuck Barris, the druggie persona was maintained.
except that he chased the dragon practically until the day he died...i love jerry and miss him more than anybody, but he definitely enjoyed his illicit drugs after 1971 it's just biographical fact
wow very amazing post....hands down my favorite dead song just beautiful when he solos the fist part and then when the song picks up.....its lights out
who ever said Jerr was a role model? He's another traveller on this short journey of life and he was sharing his soul in music. He never said he was your guru, mentor, role model or anthing like it. Just enjoy his music and let the personal jibes go if you are intelligent enough to do that. Its amusician thing. Sure he had his human weaknesses and crosses to bear. Don't we all. Loved the GD's music, not about the drug culture.
I was reading a music mag article about Paul McCartney's odd fingerpicking style. Upon seeing this it made me wonder about Jerry. Missing his index finger must really have made for an odd fingerpicking approach.
@SotR59 I've heard him say in interviews that in a weird way it was a blessing in that it gave his right hand greater independence. This is actually a good example of that.
Not really odd. Most picker use either two (thumb and index) or three (thumb, index, middle). Jerr used three but subbed his ring for his missing middle. Much influenced by Mississippi John Hurt. Same with his banjo: he used three fingers like Earl Scruggs and Ralph Stanley. The only thing odd was his stump allowed him on guitar to switch between using a flat pick and his fingers by stashing his pick between his index finger and stump.
@younwhosarmy perhaps you should not blame any person other than the so called junkies themselves. each man is the captain of his own ship. you cannot hold a person accountable for anothers sins. by blaming you ignore the true underlying cause as to why this person became a junkie. we are all responsible and accountable for our actions in the end. you should also consider why you feel the need to express yourself this way. just saying. Namaste.
I miss Jerry too... on this plane. But I talk with him lot's and he is still gettin down. Just think what we all have to look forward too when oour time on this ball is done. We'll all be playin in the band!
all there is alongside these old dead videos is a bunch of ungrateful's talking about how everyone else is a piece of shit who knows nothing about music.
@srruckoldt And quoting from rolling stone shows how little you know about music, or anything for that matter. Are your kids taking it up the ass from you still, in jesus name ?
@srruckoldt You used this 'source' as the basis of an arguement, you seem to be having a hissy fit as you call it , right now, maybe you should change your name to suckhole?????
@srruckoldt Thats funny I hadn't any idea you were in the military, you obviously need some one to tell you what is good/bad, right/wrong a major issue with your confidence? or is it you have no real power of discrimination, and can't tell the difference? so you rely on what you consider to be the authority to back you up? sad really, I bet your bible gets lots of wear?
Jerry was an icon in a time when not just anybody could be one. You had to have been there to know what it took to stand out, part of the mindset then. Judging him by today's standards is foolish. He played the pedal steel guitar intro-extro (from what I heard, corrections welcomed) on CSNY's TEACH. It's not all about radical chops. It takes more than that. His art had one heck of a following and was supported by cutting edge companies like Alembic. He's playing one in this video. He is missed!
@micaofboca, first off,why are you watching this video if your just going to diss jerry's playing.Second off, where do you come from saying that?go listen to your lil wayne rap shit, stay off grateful dead's videos, your a disgrace to them.Dont search videos if your going to say bad shit about them, not cool man.
Thankfully he isn't overrated as a guitarist, musician or singer, because IMO he hasn't a shred of talent. His chords are boringly elemental and played in such a lackluster method of accompaniment that the rhythm isn't accented with a groove. His solos are meandering and lacking true lyricism. It's almost as if he were trying to play poorly - that's how little thought and creativity appears to be applied at any time. Were he disguised and tried out for my band I wouldn't hire him. 0 0 0
Are you some kind of dumbass? Jerry had a very distinctive style of playing that is appreciated by millions of people. His solos often had a melodic feel that came from his experience with bluegrass. I bet your band is some unoriginal piece of shit.
lol he never said he didn't give a shit about his music, he said he never cared if he was successful due to his music and art. additionally, he the note he was able to sing and hit on the guitar are truly unique. many musicians could only dream of having half the talent, let alone the charisma. don't try to diss jerry you twat. you clearly know nothing about music or art.
@GDeadVT dude, don't waste ur time trying to correct people who troll Jerry Garcia, obviously hes brilliant, just ignore the comment and appreciate his music
since i listen 2 1000s hour dead last 20 years this nugget is toooo priceless a kewl moment in time u nevar nu u wud git to c. but to each his own i.e. haters fuck off and go listen to lady gaga or justin beaver or we. also plz rls the rest of this bcuz solo cut off at the end. the reaction smile to roadie stage call is fucking golden. gdtrfb>scarlet>fire>we bid you goodnight lay down my dear brother lay down and take your rest rip jerry kthxbai
Looks like Tiger to me. Incredible footage - sure wish there was some more backstage/ rehearsal footage for us to soak up. C'mon people, surely SOMEBODY out there snuck a Super 8 into Front Street during the never ending rehearsals for Cats Under the Stars ??!!!!
i feel ya dude, jerry put so much passion into his playing, and he really had no family as a child either, so playing guitar was his way to "get away" and the thing he could hold onto
It just takes two moments and he gets you with his covert but calm smile if the music didnt do it before. Nothing could strike this guy, firm and wise as the rock itself. Priceless
wow, that's really impressive. still able to jam like back in the day. the vox are lo qual, but you could tell he wasn't really supporting them because it was just a backstage run-through. still, a great song, sounds lovely, and it's nice to see that even the great ones screw up every now and again and need a do-over. :)
naw.... all those name brands are bomb and all... but a hella nice blown piece/bong has much more personality and sentimental value.. but yes glass is key....

@srruckoldt I maybe shouldn,t have called you a moron, miguided and clueless is enough.
jsilence418 1 year ago
@srruckoldt Thats funny I hadn't any idea you were in the military, you obviously need some one to tell you what is good/bad, right/wrong a major issue with your confidence? or is it you have no real power of discrimination, and can't tell the difference? so you rely on what you consider to be the authority to back you up? sad really, I bet your bible gets lots of wear?

@srruckoldt I can't believe how many clue less fucking morons quote rolling stone and their 10 best 100 greatest bullshit !

He is missed!
dragongoff 1 year ago
@micaofboca, first off,why are you watching this video if your just going to diss jerry's playing.Second off, where do you come from saying that?go listen to your lil wayne rap shit, stay off grateful dead's videos, your a disgrace to them.Dont search videos if your going to say bad shit about them, not cool man.
hippyguitarist94 1 year ago
Thankfully he isn't overrated as a guitarist, musician or singer, because IMO he hasn't a shred of talent. His chords are boringly elemental and played in such a lackluster method of accompaniment that the rhythm isn't accented with a groove. His solos are meandering and lacking true lyricism. It's almost as if he were trying to play poorly - that's how little thought and creativity appears to be applied at any time. Were he disguised and tried out for my band I wouldn't hire him. 0 0 0
micaofboca 1 year ago
Are you some kind of dumbass? Jerry had a very distinctive style of playing that is appreciated by millions of people. His solos often had a melodic feel that came from his experience with bluegrass. I bet your band is some unoriginal piece of shit.
BanjoEclipse 1 year ago 16
lol he never said he didn't give a shit about his music, he said he never cared if he was successful due to his music and art. additionally, he the note he was able to sing and hit on the guitar are truly unique. many musicians could only dream of having half the talent, let alone the charisma. don't try to diss jerry you twat. you clearly know nothing about music or art.

@rocklobbsta
He is playing the GD original "Crazy Fingers"
They stopped playing it in the late 70's for a few yrs and brought it back in the early 80's and played it steadily until the end.
This looks about 1985 maybe?
DoctorSapperstein 1 year ago
his finger picking was great, considering he only had four of them. i've got all five i can't play that well.

i feel ya dude, jerry put so much passion into his playing, and he really had no family as a child either, so playing guitar was his way to "get away" and the thing he could hold onto

to live in the Dead House when they started, he didn't like Jerry complained he always stole
his food hahaha that's all he had to say about it
(he was a freak too) I imagine them just sitting around like this back in 60's (they eventually asked my friend to leave when they
started getting successful haha

wow, that's really impressive. still able to jam like back in the day. the vox are lo qual, but you could tell he wasn't really supporting them because it was just a backstage run-through. still, a great song, sounds lovely, and it's nice to see that even the great ones screw up every now and again and need a do-over. :)
