  • very good conductor

  • The tempo is not too slow; it's reflective of the 19th C tempo of life.

Just enjoy the music. It's heavenly.

  • I will tomorrow, January 30th, perform this piece as a tenor, and I am very excited. Our orchestera is a fraction of the size of this one, but the sound seems to be quite sufficient to get the job done! Looking forward to it!

  • it is pretty but they're taking it at a very slow tempo. The song is already pretty long and speeding it up a hair makes it more interesting

  • @moonpearl666

I would ask about the slow tempo: Fates do not occur fast, unfortunately . . . Thereafter, a tempo chosen is never too slow . . . In Brahms, a conductor has to watch firstly how the Chor breathes (divisi of voices), in order to keep sound, and so on . . .

  • Just by looking at the conductor, you can tell this version is not exactly gonna be the greatest. But still, very enjoyable.

  • I remember singing Tenor 1 on this song in my city's symphony orchestra. Great song!

  • @TrueTenorMan me, too! this song is just unforgetable!

  • The amazing harmonic development and subsequent tension and release makes this absolutely orgasmic. It is a total joy to sing (I know, I am also a professional choral singer).

  • I think the tragedy in Brahms' life was portrayed brilliantly in his music. The number of love songs he wrote while only achieving the most dysfunctional of relationships himself is astounding. His music always has a charming irony to it. I think my dry sense of humour aids my enjoyment.

  • And that, Vespro, is why my opinion is more valuable than yours. Please explain why you (dis)like about a composer's music before you criticise it next time.

  • @rorinator101 *what you (dis)like

  • with due respect, I think this version does not complete the perfection of brahms masterpiece. not in the slightest. aware of the bad sound quality.

  • Wrong place to end this part, LOL! Two more notes!

  • Brahms' mixture of compassion in the face of tragedy and the fatalism of destiny is perhaps difficult to bear but he expresses it so beautifully. He looked at life unflinchingly.

    My dear,

possibly only Germans or Germans from the north are able to understand Brahms' music - it is the perfect mixture of artistic and sentimentalism - it is g e r m a n - people from abroad are often not able to understand and to perform german romantic music

  • Bis ins wievielte Glied muss das (Nord)Deutschtum denn zurückreichen? Muss man auch protestantisch sein? So ein Humbug. Ist dir bewusst, dass das Teil hier ganz passabel performed wird von Polen?

  • HAHAHAHAHA you're an idiot

  • Ok, there are some opinions, I don't like Brahms and all of you like his music. I can't really understand how can somebody think Brahms is more interesting than Bach or he's the perfection... But it's just an opinion, and I respect it. So I won't listen Brahms because he bores me.

  • Vespro, have you had a chance to sing Op. 82, Nänie? I like it better.

I think it may suffer from the same setback however: it is hard to appreciate until you know it intimately.

Brahms is known for his rich textures and sophisticated harmonic writing, but if I had never come to know it the way I did--

in school, practicing with small groups in the back rooms for the sheer enjoyment, with other kids who loved the music--

I too would likely find its YouTube recording fairly boring.

  • @Vespro sorry, but you can't compare Brahms with Bach! Bach lived150 years before Brahms! It's two different times, circumstances, everything was different!! Bach is, how my teacher uses to say "Vater Bach", but it doesn't mean, that Brahms is less interesting! It's different!!!

  • @Vespro perfectly reasonable opinion. But you'll come around to many of Brahms' works at some point. Brahms was a genius of sorts in that from very early he had a very unique harmonic language. Later, when one added his capacity to understand large-scale works like symphonies and then be innovative in these forms, it became clear his intellect was superior.

  • To be sure, Bach is something like God, But how can someone find Brahm's music boring??? If Bach is a god, Brahms is the perfection.

  • I believe Brahms and Bach to both be genius. This is gorgeous in an entire different matter. They're from two different time periods. In my opinion Brahms is much more interesting than Bach. Just my opinion.

  • First of all, Gued0117, I don't like Brahms, and this opinion is as valuable as yours. Maybe you don't like J. S. Bach, for example, and I think Bach is God. And, answering AlmaSchiwago, I listen it because I'm a proffesional choir singer and I have to sing it, so I wanted to listen it before learning, in order to know how it sounds. And it's boring XD

  • Brahms is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo boring...

  • Do you have no ears?!?? How can you say that Brahms is boring?!!!

  • then why do you listen?!?!

  • I love this song! Thanks!

  • this is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too slow. :(
