Damn sad that he died so young. Love his sound, and his music. But I have to wonder – did the cigarettes (which I saw many times in this vid) do him in?
Either way — Im sorry he is not around to share his music.
Such a artist, damn I nearly fell over when he passed, and for some reason lately I have been listening to him more and more Rest in peace RP and look down and bless us with more of talent like yours.
I had just moved to Spain for some weeks in ´03 when the hard news struck.Such a wonderfully inspired and mildmannered intelligent artist. He had a certain coolness about him,but behind that there was just truckloads of talent.I´m an artist myself and very inspired by Robert.I became a fan of his work through the Power Station;still 1 of the best records of the 80´s,then got Riptide and never looked back.R.I.P.-"tide",Robert, I miss you...
What a treat to see him here. Thank you for sharing this. I love how he explains his work and his honest approach to everything he did - He was truly devoted to his music. A wonderful singer taken too soon from this world.
I, too, have always loved Robert's honesty in his interviews. That was my favorite quality, besides his singing, and it made him a wonderful person to listen to. Rest In Peace, "my sweet baby"!
Robert was on "Later With Jools Holland" around the time of the "Rhythm And Blues" he sang with an all black backing group.he performed "Pride","Twenty Million Things","Stone Cold" and maybe "True Love" (not sure about that one).
If anyone out there has these performances,PLEASE upload!!
if memory serves me he featured on Later with jools again after releasing DRIVE. likewise please upload!!!!
kronocide, definately agree with what u said. and that man got better with age, no question. I bought my first RP album at age of 7, in 1991, miss that feeling of... "i wonder what the next album will be like" RIP Mr.Palmer
"i wonder what the next album will be like" Oh, I know that feeling. I discovered Clues when I was 14 or so (that would have been in '84), I bought all of his previous albums (including the three with Vinegar Joe, and a compilation of the Alan Bown Set!), and he held my curiosity throughout like no other artist really has since.
Great interview and great last effort--the album's good all the way through (took me too long to buy it). I love RP's 'trappings' (affectionately observed): first the cigarette, then the hand slightly nervously through the hair a few times, then the drink at the end. But so genuine, and so obviously in love with his work. Miss you, Robert!
Nothing wrong with his voice, that's for sure. He was so honest! I loved that about him, and you could hear it in his voice.... Singing was fun for him and he put that into every performance.... We miss you, Robert!
The best and most revealing interview with Palmer I have seen. The man was no clown, not one to put on a show for any camera in sight, which makes his words that more worthy of attention. Thanks for the post!
I was introduced to Mr Palmer back in 1978 or was it 77...does not matter really when I was in the recording industry...this lad was a real class act...I really enjoyed most of the material especially his early works...I was in utter shock when I got wind of his passing...dear boy...may his music live on and may he rest in peace...
if robs new to anyone please u have to buy his first 3 albums which are a masterclass in vocals you also get the meters and little feat playing on all 3 albums as backing, DAMN their funky
YES. Just listen to the opening tracks from the Sneakin Sally record and if that doesn't grab you, well you are hopeless. "Hey, Hey Julia you're actin' so peculiar..."
The entirety of the Riptide album was a masterpiece. As I recall, Bernard Edwards was involved on that album. Anywho, I always liked Mr. Palmer going back to his early days. RIP.
Strange, I always thought Mr. Palmer didn`t drink alcohol at all... I wonder where I got that idea from... :O Well, I love him anyway... R.I.P. Robert
I miss this man so much...he was taken wayyyy too soon...he had so much to give as a person and musically...I wish I would have seen him live...almost did a few times but other plans prevented me and I will forever regret it.
R.I.P. Robert...you should have cut down on the cigs and the booze but then again...that's who you were.
He was such an awesome artist. He never put out a bad album, period, although Riptide was my least favorite. My two favorites though were Some People... and Pride.
very kind man

In this interview, RP says he's not afraid of the microphone. That's for sure - he can sing anything! Love that about him!
He had an honest approach to his life and work.
A true class act. Sadly missed. I raise my glass to Robert. Cheers!

Am I the only one who thinks the strange cadence of Palmer is like Walken?
Robert Palmer is a treasure lost far too soon. He was so off-center and I always associated with that.
"Drive" is a fantastic, underrated recording.
