I squealed like a little girl when this was put back in Sonic Generations.

So I am in the midst of playing sonic generations and I just ran past the boss plate and this started playing...being a sonic fanboy I knew exactly who and where this came from..and had to Immediately had to listen to the song

As I recall in the comics, there was an Ivo Robotnik, who was the actual Dr. Robotnik we know from the original games. And then he created a Dr. Eggman robot sometime before he died, which took over his spot. The Eggman robot does believe he is the real thing and no one ever asks if he's a robot, so there's no reason he couldn't be in game canon.

The only thing that bothered me in Generations was "nobody calls me that anymore," and I feel it's the fault of the writer, who also wrote Colours.

The whole Story with Eggmans name is simple. He was Doctor Eggman from the beginning, but when Sonic The Hedgehog made the transition to the USA they changed the name to Robotnik to give him a communist feel. (If you look at some of the old Sonic cartoons its obvious.

Around Sonic Adventure Sega must have just said screw it and changed his name back.

So he always was Doctor Eggman. All these people who want his "original" name got there facts mixed up.

Acctually, the story is a tad more complex than that.

His name was Dr. Eggman, and as you said it became "Dr. Ivo Robotnik" in the US. Eventually, when SA came out he was switched back to Eggman in the US. HOWEVER...

Both names are correct! According to the canon in both the US and Japan, his full name is Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik, making it more like a nickname. This conicides with Dr. Gerald and Maria Robotnik who have the same names in both the US and Japan.
