  • Hey Ben!

Do you know and 5-stringers that will post a video of this with tutorial?

  • @TheYohanJohn You know I'm playing a 5-string banjo, right? Is that what you're asking?

  • @BanjoBen1 No I thought you were playing a six string because i don't see the tuner on the side. Is that a different style?

  • @TheYohanJohn It's the same tuning, but the 5th string runs beneath the fretboard from the 5th fret and comes out on the peghead. I've made a video about it called, "This, is my banjo". Check it out! Thanks!

  • YOU ARE A MASTERRRRRR

  • Is this a regular 5-string banjo? Or a 4 or 6 string?

  • i like your stile and its great to finally find somebody that really knows how to teach . do you have any tab to go with your lessons ? if so how can i get them ?

  • Ben, I don't play the banjo and don't plan on it, but your instruction was so enjoyable I couldn't help but watch the whole thing. You're a fantastic player (obviously), but I think you're an equally excellent instructor.

  • Relax, Ben..... you're not alone. 7:47...... I have what I call "Millsitis" where I play my hammer-ons with my index and ring finger on the third string almost like the way Jim Mills does it. It's what I've gotten used to and we're all differerent, but you're right, everyone should start off on the right foot.

  • ty jsi hroznej kokot

  • Hi Ben sure like the playing im kind of a beginner to intermed., and i bought your tabs to I'll fly away and foggy mtn., problem is the tab to foggy mtn was in guitar and the player i downloaded doens't play banjo, too bad would have been nice to hear at my speed setting.

  • I really enjoy these good gospel banjo tunes. I like the one you did on Life's Railway to Heaven and this arrangment of I'll Fly Away is great. I got the tabs for these on richards and southern and they are great. Keep it up Ben. And i was wondering if you might try to work up an arrangment of I Feel Like Travelling On and Just a Little Talk With Jesus. I'm interested in these songs and would be sure to get the tabs for these. Thanks for the great songs.

  • I'm just a beginner and it would be really helpful

if you could slowly show whats goin on with both

    hands,perferably a split screen.

  • I'm a beginner, and it would be really helpful if I could see

what both hands are doing at the same time.

  • good job man :) you got talent God bless keep it up :)

  • Ben, you did great, thanks ! But give up that nasty tobacco habit, it will kill ya !

  • @fgleich I'm quitting! I promise! Thanks :)

  • i like your advanced lessons it helps me

it seems like all there is on youtube is Beginner versions, i like learning Advanced versions of songs thanks man for your work

  • Great Picker you are BanjoBen :) keep on pickin' on that banjo, i am intrested on buying one, but not sure which one i should get. maybe you can help me decide. this is my first time playing a banjo, but i am really getting into it because it's just fun to listen to and looks a lot fun to play it. please do send me a message in return on your thoughts and recommendations. thanks and i am subscribing to you! have a great day and keep on pickin'!

  • hahah love the intro

  • wow is there any end to your talent . top class

  • I am subscribing...pretty great picker..would love to pick with you some where down the road or so. But yeah I am subbing to you that's for sure xD

  • What kind of bluegrass banjo (5-string) are you playing?? I've never seen one like you are playing. Does it have a full length 5th string??

  • That particular question has been plaguing me, as well.... BUT I think I got it.

It is basically a "banjitar" 6 string.. he has dropped the #6 string, and replaced the guitar strings with banjo strings, and retuned it.. I could be wrong but I don't think so......

  • I think it's actually called a stealth banjo. It's just like a regular banjo except the fifth string kinda tunnels under the fretboard behind the fifth fret. Something like that.

  • Okay, Thanks, I finally saw where he tells

about it, and yes it does tunnel, and oddly enough, he built it.........

  • Hey Bones/Craigs

First of, I am not banjoben he just answered this in an earlier video. (I was curious about this too so I did some looking in his videos).

If you look at 1:36 you can tell there are only 5 strings. The 5th string is tunneled to the top of the neck. thats all I remember from his post, if you look long enough you can find his response.

  • Some nice fast scale songs would be kickass

  • YOUR MY HERO!

  • Ben,

Keep up the good work. Great videos!

  • or that is a 5 string ? iv not seen a 5 string without the machinehead on the 6 freat

  • so if your playing that on a 6 string banjo it would be different to a 5 string or not?

  • Howdy Howdy....i was woundering if you could possible make a short video of ways to keep time on the banjo. i can keep time in general but as you said in this video the math doesn't add up. Also im dieing to hear you play Foggy Mountain Breakdown. Thanks

  • i subbed

  • I'm a beginer

  • hey man loving what ur doig just starting out so i need all the help i can get man

  • as far as the range of skill for the viewers, i would just go for a good mix of levels.

  • Is that the shape of texas on the 5th fret?

  • we want more of anything Ben......and of course the Sister's with you. thanks

  • How about Dueling Banjos with your sister?

  • cool song...can you show us the song..working on a building...ty

  • Shazam! Is that a six string banjer with five tuners? Please, stop the insanity Ben and get a fake tuner mounted on the fifth fret. Thank you......love your videos...

  • I dig the Dr.Pepper part! Subliminal Message?? hahaha

  • Wow smooth sounding..I loved this 5 stars (:

And can you still learn this version as smooth as you have it on just Five String?

B/c I noticed you have a six string and is the six easier than the five string? Loads of questions sorry..im a beginner really.

  • It actually is a 5-string :) Folks think it's a 6-string because the 5th string peg is on the headstock, but it tunes and plays just like a standard 5-string banjo!

  • That is a indeed, a very good break (tasty, even). Great job! Please post the advanced version. If anything, it gives us beginners something to shoot for.

  • Er...when you die...can I have your fingers please...?? LOL Excellent very talented indeed. Thank you for sharing this

  • lol..jealousy im getting that too..haha good playing tho..awfully smooth (:

  • I love this song, it's the one my dad always ended with ta get everybody in church cranked up.

  • and i'm a beginner like a really big beginner like i've had my banjo since christmas beginner don't even know a song beginner

  • What brand is that Banjo? For the life of me, I CANT see the fifth string tuner...unless its a 4 stringer. Doesnt sound like a 4 stringer, though.

  • its a 6 string...like a guitar so i guess its called a banjtar or a guitjo

  • Actually it is a Nechville or similar with the 5th string tuner on the peghead.

  • oh well it looked like a 6 string i've seen a 6 string banjo

  • It's a custom job out of East Texas called a Phantom built by Mitch Key. The 5th string is tunneled through the neck like the Scott Vestal Stealth banjos....if you count the tuners on the headstock, you'll count 5! Thanks for watching!

  • ok cool because i thought i couldn't learn from your videos because i have a regular 5string banjo with the 5th peg half way up the fret board but thanks now i can learn your stuff

  • its on the head stock. dont know how how that works. but i guess what works works

  • ha ha same here :P

  • Thanks for the tips on I'll Fly Away...will be playing this in Church in a couple of weeks...Farmers Fight!!! Blessings...Vic Quinton

  • There aint nothing wrong at all with bluegrass musicians chewing tobacco now is there? dont we all?

  • Hi I don't comment much on your vids, but If your looking for feedback, I would be very interested in an advanced version of this.

    Great post!

  • hello you play well, thanks

  • Come, on... Are you more intrested in his spitting and how he looks and acts than you are about learning how to play the banjo???

N-E way, People look better when they chew & SPIT than when they let it drool down the sides of their mouth and face.

  • I enjoy the beginner stuff you do!

  • It's just vitamins in the can...

  • My grandfather used to play for me when i was a child , i am now 40 hes gone and i would love to be able to go to his grave and play amazing grace for him but i bought a five string a few years ago and feel totaly illiterate in playing it. if there is any thing you can do to help me with my problem , please reply . If not its ok . I cant find anyone who will give lessons in my area

  • When I started playing banjo I hardly knew a thing about it either. I got a book (You can teach Yourself Banjo) by Janet Davis and it has been great I really would recomed you get that book, and it has an arangment for amazing grace in the back. If you need any help let me know.

  • That's how I learned! I love that book! When I teach new students, that's the first thing I have them to buy!

  • Ben? do you hyave the tabs for I'll Fly Away?

  • Piano Player, thats damn cool! lol ive played piano for 10 years and im 14. I just started banjo a month ago and im enjoying it alot.

  • tabs would be a great help for beginers like me.

  • fantastic dude....I'm a rookie banjo player, got cripple creek down and part of dueling banjos.....you make it look easy....maybe someday it will be....

  • thanks for these vids man!! im in the army stationed in korea and i just decided to pick the banjo up again after a couple of years and you have been the most help of anyone ive found on this site so keep it up!! also i was wondering if you could put a vid of foggy mountian breakdown on here im having trouble getting the first double hammer ons to sound right. thank you very much for your help!! josh

  • As far as making your banjo more mellow, I really don't know that much about :) I know you can change the bridge to a wood that's not quite so hard and bright. Second, you can place your right hand further from the bridge. That's what I do when I need it to sound more mellow. Good luck!

  • It's a homemade job :) To tell you the truth, it's one of the sharpest sounding banjos I've played...except for a few of the archtops I've played. It sounds mellow, because I have it stuffed full with an XL t-shirt. A couple of reasons for that. First, it keeps it from feeding back when I plug it in at these big venues. Second, it's too loud and sharp for the mic on my computer when making these videos, and without the t-shirt it distorts the sound. Thanks for watching!

  • ok truly a beginner, but this very helpful-I get lost because not enough speed for rools yet! hope you do post a tab. thanks!!!!

  • this is great- thanks. Would it be possible to get a copy of your tab for this?

  • Website coming soon!! Thanks!!!

  • It plays exactly the same as a normal 5-string. The 5th string runs into a hole at the 5th fret and is tunneled under the fret board and comes out on the headstock. People think it's a 6-string all the time :) I just designed it like that when I was a young and stupid kid:) I'm looking to get another traditional neck built for it before too long. Thanks for watching! Subscribing just means that you'll be notified when I put out a new lesson. Thanks for subscribing!

  • It is a 5-string...it's just one of those modern space-walkin' banjos.

  • Hey cqccasey, if i am correct that is a five string with the 5th tuner on the headstock. A 6 string plays like a guitar. I hpe i helped.

  • Great video...And please yes do a more "jazzed" up version. It's fun learning hard stuff.

  • its the little yellow button lol

  • Love the videos ben! I'm only a begginner and you're vids are extremely helpful.
