To the brain dead sad excuse for a human being reading this and about to message me, don't even bother. You grew up watching tv, you have nothing of value to say. Go watch some more of the one-eyed Jew and let it teach you about life. Let the electric-Jew raise your children as well.
Oh what's this? A Jew (Dustin Hoffman) stealing from whites and desecrating Christianity. Wow things sure have changed in Hollywood! Not. The Talmud worshipping perverts down in LA have so much creativity..
I think the point of the last scene is to highlight that they did make a mistake. They don't love each other. Their behavior throughout the movie was reactionary, and although the alternative they faced wasn't better, what they did here was rash and bridge-burning. They could've handled themselves much better. I mean, what are they going to do now? They've got to face their families again at some point.
@Eivyll Agreed. Also they ultimately realized that they'd have to go through the same things their parents did, thus becoming them. I love the ending, it raises so many ideas. I didn't get or like the ending when I was younger, but the older I get the more I understand the sullen looks on their faces.
this was the art of cinema, this filme is so well filmed, it barely have dialogue but it still give us a prespective of the love that thoses guys felt for eachother.
they're probably quiet at the end because all the passengers are staring at them...so they are thinking in their heads ok you morons you can turn around now we're fine lol
@youtuuberoxx they are quiet in the bus because they have 20y, they are confused, in love, without any plan what will they do next, she told 2 guys she's gonna marry them:P, they are in love but their reactions were totally impulsive (without thinkin), and the part where they go quiet in the bus is "is that ok what we do?" and "yeah it's ok".. "what will happens next, who knows??:PP"
The expression on Dustin's face on the bus is priceless.....he got the girl, but now what? The hunt meant more then the catch. Best Picture 1968...1967
@milkywaycenter lol its funny u say that because the movie was supposed to end after they looked at each other but for some reason the camera was still rolling, so the directer decided he wanted to use this ending instead which i think is best way because it is like now what situation
I don't think they felt that it was a mistake. FAR FROM IT:) I think the glum look from these two coincides obviously, with the lyrics of the song Sound of Silence. I bet they were disgusted and shocked at the reactions of society in general. If it were me, 'the look of glum' would be the result of my sadness for those who got left behind, & knowing that life is wasted to spend it living within a culture which is at war (with itself).
@TheOneinthewoods well you are wrong. They never loved each other they were in love with the idea of each other of escaping their lives. At the end they don't even look at one another.
At the end, do they both realize they've made a mistake? I don't really get it, their faces are very glum. Plus Dustin Hoffman isn't very likeable in this movie, imo. It's a good movie though. Very odd though.
Not only that, but by using it to seal the door, it symbolizes how the older generation are "trapped" by their old fashioned religious beliefs. Note that when the motther says "It's too late," the daughter replies "Not for me"--in reference to more than just the wedding ceremony.
I realize the ending's probably more but I just think of it as them just settling down and relaxing after all that. Honestly I think the end was just intended to be what you make of it between the possible outcomes to their feelings
i love they didn't tell the actors what do after they sat down on the bus. for that shot, they were actually just sitting there not knowing what they were suppose to do.
The actress who played Mrs. Robinson was only 8 years older than the actress who played Elaine. Anne Bancroft was 36 and Katharine Ross was 28 when this movie hit theaters.
And she was only 6 years older than Dustin Hoffman, even though her character is at least 20 years older than his.
rkwillis63 The director of The Graduate was intentional with this scene. It suggests that the character's sad look at the end means "We are going to turn out just like our parents". That is what he was trying to convey.
When we wake up to the truth of life, inspired music like this will emerge again and flourish. Go to TruthContest (dot) com and read The Present to learn the truth.
@ringingo007 That's why some guys would settle for the Mrs. Robinson scenario. I'm a one-woman kind of guy myself and for the right woman, I'd do that honey-do list! But man, there was a time in my life when I almost fell into those seductive traps. I could relate so much to Benjamin; I know what it's like!
Remember this film and I'd seen this motion picture in 1967 at Faculty of Medicine University of Indonesia. Remembering the sweetest and bitter period on that time 43 years ago. GBU
I agree, it is not a positive ending. If it was, Nichols would have ended the movie when they were chuckling in the back of the bus. Instead, you can see that Elaine has reservations after leaving her would-be doctor and husband. Furthermore, this may be far-fetched, but as the bus departs you see Elaine and Ben in different windows. This would show that despite their good intentions, a visible, emotional disconnect exists between the two characters.
@scenesonn I've watched and LOVED this movie for well over 35 years now and often wondered about that as well. That look on their faces at the end gives almost a bittersweet/melancholy type of feel, but it somehow still works.
@23PowerL well it may appear that way but actually its not when you think about it. When Ben and Elaine are riding on the bus they don't even look at each other and when one smiles the other's face become tense and goes back to a frown. This is done to show there is still much uncertainty between them. They don't even look at each other or kiss each other, almost like there is a brick wall between them. it's not all peachy and Ben are back where they started...in a world of uncertainty
@pedroylospedros just two young people with the same desire. To get away so they do it together forgetting that if they commit to running away together, they have committed. To them, they might as well still be stuck since they're with this other person. We can only hope that it worked out for them but since we know the story of Mr. and Mrs. Robinson, its more likely that it didn't.
It's really sad. Two hopeless romantics who don't know what they want caught in a cycle.
The thing I never got about this scene is; Who locks a church door when there's a wedding going on inside? And if the door's locked, how do they get out?
@weirds0up I dont think it was locked- he just wanted to make a more dramatic entrance! Yet as we dont see Elaine open the door- maybe she picks the lock?! I'll ask Dustin the next time i see him for you...
She looks toward him twice after boarding, is she doubting her decision and looking for affirmation? He does not look back, twice. Is he convinced and just looks toward the long future, or is he cold, after all he's been through, and his bitterness will potentially destroy what they have salvaged. How long before she will have an affair, he had one after all. Or will they appreciate what brought them to this point and cherish it? Classic scene.
