  • It's not Kanji, it's hiragana!!

  • This game looks like a great tool but man it's expensive. I just looked it up on eBay and it's like $30 bucks used and $80 brand new. The same thing on Amazon.com.

  • Learned a couple of words from it. It's quite good.

  • they are not kanji!!!!!!! it is hiragana!!!! please learn this!

  • ggaaaaahhhhh!!! They aren't called Kanji's!!! DX lol! It's the Japanese alphabet of Hiragana. That got really annoying coz you kept saying that lol. Kanji are the really complex ones (most of the time) and Hiragana is moderately complicated (normal) and Katakana is (mostly) the least complex one. But nice vid, easy to see. I really want this game!!! Gonna get it soon hopefully, but they don't really sell it here in Australia, I have to buy it from UK or USA... T_T

  • If this is what I'm hoping hoping hoping it is then i'm saved! I've been looking for an easy way to learn the Japanese language

  • Sweet review dude! I just bought the game three days ago. There are several words missing from the dictionary and some of the stroke order for the Japanese characters are wrong. This game isn't perfect, but for the price it gets the job done. For newbies this game will teach you a good amount of japanese and what's best is that you can take it to go. I highly reccomend it for those with busy lives who want to learn a language on the train ride home.

    Sweet review!

  • @suidrac Thanks alot, hope you'll learn alot of japanese to start with, when you are more advanced, try other more advance japanese programs or books to learn more. But for basic japanese, it's just great.

  • cool :P

  • ichigo is a good way to remember 15

  • Ichigo means strawberry. 15 is jyuugo

  • Yup, that I knew, I got tons of comments like that, you have the game as well right?

  • Haha I was replying to 3linkinpark, but no matter. And nope, haven't got the game as of yet unfortunately. I want to get it though (hence why I watched the video) :]

  • Ah ok, it's pretty kool if you are starting to learn japanese. It's been a while since I played mines but I might get back to it soon. Btw, if you have time, you can also check out my other vids and see if u like it.

  • do they have any similar games that teach you Russian ?

  • My mom is going to get me the game, but before she spends her money I wanted to make sure it was worth it, it is! Thank you so much for this video! But I have a question, does this game help with the specific grammar and such? I would really like to know!

  • Most of them, I haven't passed the game yet and it's been a while I have played it myself. I'm planning to replay that game soon to put all those details on my notebook as well for practice. But it does help alot on all the basic and grammars as well cause the language itself is very strict, especially the kanjis and the kataganas.

  • I want this game, I want to talk Japanese!

  • Thank you! I can't wait till the game comes in, maybe I'll make my own review on it aswell. Once again, thank you for posting this video! I'm sure it's helped a lot of people!

  • my grandma ordered me this for christmas and my spanish coach

  • Hey dude nice review! I just wanted to make sure this game was legit before I bought it. Please watch my videos. Bye! :)

  • sweet review, im getting this game now, help me learn jap :P

  • Thanks alot, hope you enjoy this game, I haven't played in a while, but if u need help with the game, let me know, I'll try to help in anyways I can.

  • Where can you by this game if you live in canton michigan?

  • dude in the video sounds like pedro from napoleon dynamite LMAO!

  • i my goodness your acsent is funnnnyyyyy not to be rude but i know your mexican and so i m i so its a okay

  • I have it right now in my hand / i'm opening it / i see the game card / i put it into my ds and start it / WOW

  • Cant wait to get this game, Its going to help me so much

  • 4 is both "yon" and "shi",

but saying "shi" is considered unlucky because the kanji for "shi" can mean 'death' depending on the connotation.

40 is always pronounced "yonjuu" so I use "yon" for 4 and 14 (juuyon)

Another case like that is the number 9. It can be said "kyu" or "ku". Saying "ku" is unlucky because it's kanji can mean pain or suffering.

    Answer your question?

  • im getting this =]

  • lol i didn't notice that! hAHAH

it's shi or yon but i rather say yon because shi also means 'dead' so yea

    thanks

  • 15 isnt ichigo its juugo. His name doesnt mean 15 his name has acouple multiple meanings depending on how you write it in kanji. One basic meaning is strawberry.

    The game looks fun :)

  • i barely got the game today, and i tell you its already helping me learn fast and easy!

  • i totally agree

  • The problem with the writing is actually pretty nice... if the hiragana has 2 strokes... your only allowed to move release the stylus of the touch screen once.. and you need some speed with writing also... becuase in real you wont do like 20 seconds for one thing

  • I barely got the game...but I am already sooo ahead!!! (Japense grammar is so primitive..i only bought it to learn Kanji LOL). DS RULES (well actually it sucks but they should make more games like this :D)

  • i have to say, the japanese months are quite lazly named lol

  • I told my Japanese tacher about this, and she has not the slightest clue of the Nintendo DS, but me and my friends have it and we're doing much better in her class

(we are at the last few days of Japanese 1, 7th grade.)

  • That's very nice, I'm glad that game's helping you in that class, do you live in Japan?

  • No, we're in a regular middle school.... in america!

  • Ah ok, that's kool. Hope you keep learning your Japanese sucessfully then^^

  • do u go to a public school? Where do u learn it?

  • I go a public school, in Virginia Beach. I signed up for it.

In 6th grade i took it as a 9 weeks elective.

in 7th grade, i took it as a yearly elective.

Soon, in 8th grade, i'm taking Japanese 2 as a yearly elective.

  • I MUST GET THIS GAME!!!! I'm going to scream if I dont get it!!! I've been trying to learn japanese for almost a year now and I can never memorize EVERYTHING

  • what lesson are you on now?

  • I haven't played the game in months 0_o, I think I should get back on that, last time I remembered, I was on lesson 20 or 30 something.

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you sooo much, so what cartoon char voice is that I might sound like?

  • Great video

  • i love this game it really helped on my japanese, me and my bro are learning japanese and we have the game i was on like lesson 32 but i decided to do it all over again to review what i have done :)

    Sayonara x

  • you sound like pedro from napolian dynamite

  • Exactly what I was thinking! x]

  • I was playing this game for about 15 minutes I think this is right (doing it out of memory) (I put word from game)

    Konichiwa - Hi

    Sayounara - Bye

    Arigatou - Thank You

    Dame - Bad

    Iie - Good

  • Oh my goshhhhhhhhhhh.

    I am SOOOOOOOOO BUYING THIS!!!!!!

<3. I'm taking a japanese class at my college next semester, and I think I might just buy a DS JUST for this game lmao. xD.

  • it was funny when you recorded "okay"

niec review i might get this.

  • Great video, I was wondering whether to buy this or not, now I'm leaning towards yes.

    Thanks for the sub!

  • Very interesting... I'm thinking about getting this.

What is your native language, by the way?

  • My first native language is english and then when I moved from New York to PR my 2nd one is Spansh!^^

  • you're cool

  • can you legitimately learn japanese from this??? im going to japan this summer and i was hoping to at least get around town without being culture shocked due to the language barrier. and this seems a lot more fun than that rosetta stone crap.

  • Not to crush your hopes or anything but knowing enough to get by will take far far longer than just a few months.

Sure, you could learn some phrases but you would not be covered for the many ways someone could answer a question you ask.

This game could teach you a lot of Japanese but you'd have to also spend a lot of time reading other things in Japanese, listening to things in Japanese and watching things in Japanese to solidify and get used to what you have learned. Enjoy Japan though!

  • well i do watch quite a bit of anime that is subbed so i've been getting familiar with some of them, but thanx for the feed back i'll still get it :)

  • subs are rearly never right trust me there way diffrent the subbers change them to make them "readable"

  • I have played this game, and there are over 1,000 lessons.

  • WHOA!! That's quite alot!

  • OMG!!! lol for me.. 9 down 991 to go LOL

  • 9 down and 991 to go in what lol?

  • out of 1000 lessons lol

  • the background music remind me of shenmue

  • What is shenmue?

  • lolz cool game thats sounds awsome

  • "okay, YON"! LOL!!!

  • Now I'm in Seventh Grade but there are grades like Sophmore ,Yikes thats a long way to go for me.

  • Minus the advanced asian math.

    You'll be alright. :)

  • Which Grade are you on I'm On 5th Grade

  • I haven't played in a long while, so I'm probably still in like 1st or 2nd grade.

  • I love you.

  • I NEED THIS GAME!!!!!!!!

  • Must...get...this...

  • omg. I hate write cards. I kept writing it exactly right but it said it was wrong because i didnt do the strokes in the right order Me : *Pissed*

  • ROLF agree i hate the brain games every time you write 4 it gives you a stubid question mark? i think they need a advance wrting system

  • I like your videos

I subscribed about a week ago

  • Yea, I noticed thanks alot^^, so how's everything?

  • I really like the review and i'm glad i got this game

  • ichigo also means strawberry

  • im taking japanese in college rite now, and this game is so helpful for vocab and such

  • this game is awesome

  • the game stop in our mall doesn't have it anymore! i was sad when they didn't have it. there's always amazon!

  • awesome review man! i'm sold! i am so getting that game when i get a ds.

  • It's only twenty dollars now. I'm buying it.

  • Wow! Kool, so it's lowered, yes, it's defenity worth getting now for anyone who wants to know basic japanese!^^ I got it for 30 bucks plus tax the day it came out!

  • lol this video made me laugh really hard too. "ok well im not soppose to say ok but ok". good video. im gettin this like tommrow, i already ordered it :P

  • were you get it from?

  • I got it from Gamestop when it first came out ^_^ like in october!

  • This is not a bad game. I am fairly good at Japanese and easily aced the proficiency test at the beginning, and certainly wish that it would allow me to go further down the lessons, but it didn't so I had to force myself to go over the lessons. In less than one day I am in like lesson 40 and it is still fairly easy for me, BUT it is a good learning software. For all of those who say it is not a good learning tool, you guys don't know what you are talking about. This is fun and works.

  • That's a pretty racist comment. >_>

Mexicans can be ultra intelligent if they wanted to. Don't be such a conceited little bitch, and keep your stupid comments to yourself. kthnks bai.

  • Thanks alot, btw, I'm not mexican, I'm a Puerto Rican and an American cause I was borned in the states and proud of it. ^_^ You have a great point, even sum africans can be more intelligent than sum americans, it depends on the person.^^

  • i am Puerto rican and peruvian but i was also born in america. i dont know why i got my moms immrigrant spekaing accent. Its funny.

  • I've heard that this game really lacks in grammer. Is this true?

  • btw ichigo means strawberry jugo is fifteen but whatever, does this game teach you sentence structure and all that or is it practically just a dictionary

  • Yup alot of ppl has been telling me that and I knew that, ichi is one and go is five and if u put them together is 15 and Ichigo is 15 years old. But forget that, yea, for now it's starting to teach me sentence structure and it does have a dictionary of alot of words, over 10,000 words to be exact at the same game.

  • sorry for being a broken reccord but if they are starting sentences in between lessons 1-29 it sounds like it will have alot more to offer thanks

  • That's ok^^ and no prob, any other questions, feel free to ask me!

  • it's hiragana not kanji im srry but i was paranoid.

Say y i know cause im japanese.

  • Thank you for the video it's great

  • No prob^^ I'm glad u enjoyed it!

  • If they game told you that Ichi + Go = 15, the game taught you wrong. Juu-go is 15.

I'm looking into buying this, just so when I'm too lazy to hit the books I can play the game for a bit a still feel like I'm doing something.

  • True, I knew that already, I just said that because Ichigo from Bleach is 15 years old and if u combine ichi which is one and go which is five, you get 15 and I'm not adding the numbers btw, and I know 15 really means juugo. It's just a coincidance I felt like saying there^^

  • i got the game a while ago but im having sum trouble remembering certain symbols when i read it in japanese... i forget what they are. does anyone know of a good stradegy or training style to make this game teach even better?

  • it help you a lot its like your own teacher i your home that do not scream at you went you make a misstake

  • That's true, you got a great point there, but sometimes screaming at someone teaches you to learn more and not get lazy about it^^

  • btw...japanese ppl write fast so my guess...its telling u to write as fast as them XD

  • arigato im geting this game XD

  • nice review! ^^d I want this game SOOO BAAAD! @_@

lol at the ichigo thing xD

oh and hooray im puerto rican too! ^^

  • i'm from japan. =]

    but i dont kno japanese.

so i'm gettin a ds and this game 4 christmas =]

  • im on lesson 28 right now, im a first grader

  • lesson 26 kindergarden.

  • Doesn't teach Japanese at all? Are u nuts? I learned quite alot of things that I would never knew before. Numbers, colors, making sentences, etc. U have a point on the samurai and ninja, they are said the same in english but they are not really made up, it's part of the Japanese culture. And if u checked the dictionary, there will be a crapload of words you never heard of in Japanese.

  • don't make me laugh. do you really think it teached you Japanese?! On the internet you can find hundreads of more valuable Japanese learning sources. It's CRAP, but you'll understand it soon... I assume you still use it, right?

  • it helps with learning japanese, you cant learn full japanaese language from this game, but it will help with your other studys, like reading from a book, or a teacher. So its a good game.

  • This game does teach you Japanese. In order to speak, you have to know the basics and the grammar. It may not cover all aspects, but it is still a good tool. & if you want to speak you need to talk to a native.

  • this game really is awful. i took 3 semesters of japanese in college, and i can tell you this game is a total disgrace to all who are trying to learn the language. My younger brother was just starting to learn Japanese, and I wouldn't let him play this because it teaches totally incorrect stroke order for the kana. This game will give you a totally rotten foundation.

  • Well look who made the game, Gaijins, right, they should of reviewed this game throughly before releasing it!! Should of had real Japanese Language prfessors correct the strokes, and I believe I'll sound just as bad as talking Japanese as The Japanese talk broken incorrect English in Japan. But It's good for starters, I still play it.

  • it's probably one of the best games i've bought this year.

  • Nice review. I have the spanish version.

  • I see, I'm from Puerto Rico btw! And thanks alot!

  • nice review but one thing that bothers me is that no one opened the sketchbook in any review XDDD

  • I see, so I'm the only one who reviews a bit of the sketchbook?

  • thanks for showing such a detailed review- I'm off to buy it, and I feel like I know what I'm going to get now. Thanks.

  • No problem ^_^, I felt like doing the review because barely no one had did a good review on it since I got it, I'm glad this video helped. It's also my most sucessful video on Youtube right now.

  • It's fun for awhile, I'm having a hard time keeping it in my memory instead of forgetting right when I'm done with a lesson.

  • That's true, that's why you should review those lessons more than once so you'll be able to keep it in your mind for good ^_^.

  • Does it teach you to speak like a female only?

    It's a huge difference.

  • Nah, the female voices are the only voices that says all the japanese words, but it teaches you alot of Japanese. Lol

  • Lol! Interesting game...actually, I JUST heard of this yesterday. One of my students said that she bought it but she likes my lessons better so she said I'll have to keep making them for a longgggg time, lol. ^-^

  • Kool, with that game, you can probably come up with alot more ideas for your videos, I might do a response to one of your videos later on. Can you check out my website too and tell me what u think of it? It's in my channel^^

  • Heey. Yeah I'll try to think of something! I appreciate this video that you put up. I'll look at your channel more when I have time, but so far it looks pretty interesting, even though I'm not really into video games that much.

  • ha ha

    ichigo means strawberry

    : P

i think ima buy this game now

  • Wow! I learned a bit of Japanese awhile ago, but I'm forgetting a lot of it, so this would be an awesome game to have. Thanks for informing me of it's greatness ^^

  • no prob, orenjiday, you're getting the game?

  • I will! As soon as I get the money to do so, I'm so poor right now ^^'

  • F--- I just bought a whole Kanji dictionary to English... IN Japanese. Darn ^_^

Great vid! And I recommend if you want to learn the kana, I say write them all a lot and then make flash cards. Just shuffle through them pretty fast. That's how I learned some basic Kanji and entirely how I learned Katakana. Again, thanks so much! Great video!

  • No problem, yes, it'll help so I can memorize the kanas and kanjis because it's not easy to memorize them all in the beginning, I made a list of them in separate paper just recently.^^ Thanks to you as well for watching and liking it.

  • i rocks hard helps a LOT

  • AlbotoAbeko ichigo means strawberry and ju go means 15

  • Spent all morning playing this game. Currently at lesson 45, 3rd grade. Finally got to kanji. Woo-hoo!

The "yomi" game for kanji is terrible. Write the kanjis perfectly & 50% of the time & it still says I'm wrong. Yes, I know about stroke order. Out of frustration I started scribbling & 50% of the time it says I'm right.

It looks like OP had a similar problem with kana.

This is strange because the DS can handle kanji. The kanji interface on tadashii kanji kakitori kun works perfectly.

  • Argh. Have worked my way up to lesson 30. Haven't even started Kanji yet! Have yet to learn anything from this game.

Problem is that I already have a working knowledge of the language. And you can only test out of the first 10 lessons in this game. Very frustrating. I'd like to know how far this game goes before investing more time in unlocking new lessons. Anyone know?

The "wack-a-mole"/"word search" are not helpful to me. I suck at them, even though I know the vocabulary/kana.

  • Ya, the wack a mole and word search games are useless, the good thing is you can skip those games whenever you see them, and go back to the main menu to play other more useful games to gain points instead.

  • Very true, I agree with u there, but I wonder what will happen if there's a lesson that only requires you to do Word Seach and Wrack a Mole, what would you do?

  • i have the game

  • For the list when you are saying some things, it only has one word at a time but when you put some words together its said differently correct? Does it have that?

  • You mean by combining words into one? Sometimes it does say it differently when you say the same word with another as a sentence, like if you say "happy" only, it's "shiawase na" but if it's happy birthday, the words changes to "tanjoubi omedetou". There's a dictionary for solo words and phrasebooks that shows a list of alot of basic sentences. But to combine it in ur own free will, not at the moment.

  • OH! Ok thanks for clArifying that so well. Im getting this for X-mas! Keep on rockin!

  • Thanks no problem, you don't mind if I add and subscribe to u, eh? lol

  • NOT AT ALL THATS AN HONOR! Thanks sooooo much! Ill subscribe to you too! I REALLY dont want to be rude are you west or east asian(if you are asian) Im just wondering. Thanks for being friendly!

  • The thing I don't like about this game is how the mastery system works... you can master something today, but what are the chances that you'll remember them next week???

The only real way to review in this game is playing the multiple choice game, but What good is reviewing with 10 random questions when you'd have like 1000+ things to remember

If you really want to see how well you mastered something then take what you learned and put it into Anki or some other form of Spaced Repetition System

  • Yes that is true because like I can't remember every single words I master by memory but I do remember most of them thought, right now, I'm going on to Lesson 13 and the only thing so far I have trouble remembering are the Hiraganas. Other than that I'm doing ok remembering. Thought this game is good so you can review all the words again incase you really need it. Thanks for ur opinion.

  • Oh I review them. Say there is 1-2 words in certain lesson that I know I will have trouble with, I go back to that particular lesson each time and review it first at the beginning of the game before I start the new lesson.

But putting it into Anki is a very good idea. =)

  • I also think this game is pretty bad when it comes to learning kana. While I know all the kana characters, this game just doesn't have a good way to practice kana which you should do everyday to keep them memorized. JDS Is a good homebrew game to practice kana so you can keep them memorized. This game has all the kana spread out and I've yet to see a game that has ALL the kana in one minigame.

  • No one can learn Japanese completely from one source of study, but this game gives beginners an area to start which is indeed useful. Like danialglover said this game can help others get into better Japanese learning games.

I know like 1500+ Kanji's from Heisigs RTK method, but the fact that I don't know no any vocabulary is a pain. I have Kakitori-Kun which is almost like KanKen, but is useless to me if I can't understand the lessons...

So I intend to use this game to build up some vocabulary

  • The reason I gave a 6/10, is while the game itself gives a LOT of great information needed. The mini-games inside the game hardly do much for people to learn. Games like Memory, Hit Words, and Word Search. There could of been more games like Write Cards/Multiple Choice/Flash cards.

  • I'll have to disagree about it teaching everything you need. While this game is good, it isn't enough. This game could of been a LOT better than what they threw out. One of the main things they could of done, is made the Write Card game actually tell you what the correct answer was when you got it wrong.

The good thing about this game, by the time you're done with it, you'll at least be able to play some of the better Japanese learning games for Kanji like KanKen.

  • Hmmm I see, yes, Flash Cards doesn't give you the correct answer when it's wrong, but I barely started the game, I'm up to like Lesson 11 and I already know numbers, colors, months of the year and days of week weeks in japanese. And sum simple sentence structure as well, but you have a good point on the games. They were basically made to remember the words more and have a bit of fun.

  • plus the newest pokemon game, platinum version! i already new this was irrelevant, but it was fun to say it though.

  • I WANT IT NOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!! Finally!!! I wait for a game like this for YEARS!!!!!!!!

  • Get it a.s.a.p, it should be $29.99 new! And no problem, no one else made a good review on this game so I stepped it and made one!

  • Gah... I won't get mine until Tuesday or Wednesday of next week... T_T

Oh, and I think their are 1000+ lesson in this game

  • 1000+ lessons, whoa, if that's ture, this game got 100 times better for me!

  • I need it! Gotta' have it now!!!

    Now Now NOW!!!
