u call the lion the king of beasts but u clearly never seen a honey badger. Lions only have a chance of taking out honey badger if its a whole pride of lions vs a single honey badger. Infact there are a few videos on youtube where a single honey badger got a pride of lions to turn tail and run. The same is true of hyenas there are many videos of them running from the honey badger.
Incredible creatures, belong in the wild, away from us humans. Poor things have less & less open space to roam & hunt. I always loved hyenas and also lions, but from a distance. At seven I was chased by an old, hungry male lion at Geita, near Mwanza, in Tanganyika/Tanzania. This involves too animals that look similar but are not closely related. Take Thylacholeo and the true placental lion .Thylacholeo was more closely related to wombats and koalas, as it was a marsupial in the order Diprotidontia and the modern placental lion is nowhere closely connected to Thylacholeo as they are in the order Carnivora.

Be they lion or hyena or any other social carnivores are very interesting. However the animal I have the most respect for as a hunter is a snow leopard (I don't know what their success rates are) but the way they run across narrow precipices and down near verticle slopes after their prey, with such bravery and agility deserves a lot of respect.

Tigers are usually solo hunters and they would never stand a chance against hyenas and lions because of that. Besides power and speed, having the brains is also important to be on top of the food chain.

There's a reason why lions are on top of the foodchain in the jungle and are able to tackle giant preys because they work as a group. They are able to fend for themselves better because they work as a community.
Sure a pack of 30 leopards may be able to beat 30 hyenas, but the fact that they live mostly in solitary, besides mating time, means the 30 hyenas are gonna take turn make dinners out of them.

@lygophile If a hyena successful kill their enemy, the lion, during a fight, the pack would actually eat the lion (not true the other way around tho), so if confronted by leopard and they kill it, they'll feed on it. As a primary food source, no, I don't think they eat leopards, but I was using your 30hyena vs 30leopard as a play on word. It is true hyena are more so scavengers than predators, and vice versa for lions, but in general, they succeed on both side.
And technically, hyenas are lions' eternal enemies, and hyenas are next in line on the top of the food chain primarily because of the size of the pack they come in.
Would stealing other predators' food be consider scavenging? Like a lion makes the kill and then the hyenas jump in and chases the cat out. That I'm not sure but that also sets them up to kill out rivals by starving them.

As a pride, the lions won't fear the Hyena unless they are grossly outnumbered. Humans, one of the weaker species, is on the TOP of the foodchain because work in numbers, use our brain to strategize, and able to devise machineries. We're also designed to be the best distant runners, but worst sprinters.
w/o technology (as primitive as spears to modern guns) and sheer numbers, humans would have been the bottom of the foodchain. Technology is our strength, a supplement to our lack of muscle/speed compared to lion's raw power. Back to Hyenas, numbers will always beat out raw power, which hyenas will always have over leopard.

Did you watch this video and here what the guy said , they are more than able to take large animals down . No animal turns it's nose up on a easy meal . And it is the only rival to a lion so have a bit more respect for them they are a killing machine and have the most powerful bite pound for pound of any dog or cat . A lot of Predators have a Larger Female then a Male, Doesn't make them bitches. Lions are great but Hyena's are very under-rated. They have a better success rate in kills then Lions, Stronger Jaws, an there ability to work in such large number's is quite impressive. Not to mention they got ball's challenging a animal over 3X there size an power an have been known to kill male lions from time to time. Be they lion or hyena or any other social carnivores are very interesting. However the animal I have the most respect for as a hunter is a snow leopard (I don't know what their success rates are) but the way they run across narrow precipices and down near verticle slopes after their prey, with such bravery and agility deserves a lot of respect.

Tigers are usually solo hunters and they would never stand a chance against hyenas and lions because of that. Besides power and speed, having the brains is also important to be on top of the food chain.

a camera can follow a pack of 30 hyenas, but it can't follow 30 leopards. however to them, the cameras really don't matter.

@lygophile pretty much being ultimate, not counting size/speed/power, means being in pack. There's a reason why lions are on top of the foodchain in the jungle and are able to tackle giant preys because they work as a group. They are able to fend for themselves better because they work as a community.
Sure a pack of 30 leopards may be able to beat 30 hyenas, but the fact that they live mostly in solitary, besides mating time, means the 30 hyenas are gonna take turn make dinners out of them.

there's one thing i aught to add though. i was thinking of hyenas as scavangers, as they, while they do hunt, are mostly build for scavanging.
but the video specifically mentioned the spotted hyena, and i just looked them up and found that they are the exception amongst hyenas for being mainly predators rather then scavengers.

oh and i'm pretty sure hyenas don't feed on leopards. i'd also take you up on a bet for who kills more of the other, between leopards and hyenas. it is well known that a leopard can take on a single hyena dispite being roughly the same size or slightly smaller.

@lygophile If a hyena successful kill their enemy, the lion, during a fight, the pack would actually eat the lion (not true the other way around tho), so if confronted by leopard and they kill it, they'll feed on it. As a primary food source, no, I don't think they eat leopards, but I was using your 30hyena vs 30leopard as a play on word. It is true hyena are more so scavengers than predators, and vice versa for lions, but in general, they succeed on both side.

And technically, hyenas are lions' eternal enemies, and hyenas are next in line on the top of the food chain primarily because of the size of the pack they come in.
Would stealing other predators' food be consider scavenging? Like a lion makes the kill and then the hyenas jump in and chases the cat out. That I'm not sure but that also sets them up to kill out rivals by starving them.

This doesn't make them a higher species or predator, it just determine's their different builds. Lion pride success rates are poor, in order to maintain balance, Hyena's are built to chase down prey with stamina and eat fast, Lion's aren't as successful hunters because they don't need to do that, they're okay feeding on one Buffalo every so often.

As a pride, the lions won't fear the Hyena unless they are grossly outnumbered. Humans, one of the weaker species, is on the TOP of the foodchain because work in numbers, use our brain to strategize, and able to devise machineries. We're also designed to be the best distant runners, but worst sprinters.
