@FinlaythePug: Yes, it is a far cry, indeed. :-) Such long trailer-combinations can be seen in several western states, but generally speaking, only in rural areas. In Oregon, they're allowed on I-5, but only thru the southern half of the state (certainly not allowed in Eugene or points north).
@FreewayBrent Yeah, on I-70 just outside of Baltimore heading West is a sign telling the distances of St. Louis, Denver and the town that's at I-70's western terminus. Now that I think about it I don't ever think I've seen 3+ trailers here on the East Coast. In the Buffalo, NY area where I'm from you only see 2 trailers at the most.
That's definitely not a freeway you'll get bored driving down! I also liked how that 26 (or so) wheeler passed you in the descent. What a madman... I wouldn't feel too safe spotting a huge truck coming down in the rear-view mirror!
@wipandco: Thanks for watching! Haha, it's not quite what it appeared. I was actually driving quite slow during this video (probably driving somewhere between 55 - 62 MPH). I just wanted to take in the scenery. If you notice how the trucker turned on both his left and right signals after merging in front of me, it's because I high-beamed him to merge into the lane (his or her way of saying "thank you for letting me come in early").
@mutt1256: Some okay footage in Colorado (pretty shaky). Still debating on whether to put the Glenwood Canyon footage on here, or my alternative site on FreewayBrentLite.
Very nice Brent! My mom grew up in Richfield just west of here, so I am very familiar with this landscape. The section of I-70 around Richfield was actually about the last section of mainline Interstate to be finished in the nation IIRC. It didn't open until 1990 or so. Keep the Utah videos coming!
@FreewayBrent Even this stretch shown in this video wasn't a full fledged freeway until 1990. The Eastbound lanes were built in 1970, and it was just a two lane Interstate for 20 years until the Westbound lanes were finished in 1990. Was the longest stretch of entirely new road built since the Alaska Hwy in 1940's. You may have known Utah originally wanted I-70 to terminate at Spanish Fork, following US-6, but Federal Planners wanted a direct route between Denver and So Cal.
@PeteTheChopp Yeah, I had always seen the "two lanes" notation on the maps way back when, but it was puzzling that the roadway line shown was the normal interstate color & texture. Was this 2-lane stretch still 'interstate quality' (as in, with a median & exit ramps & paved shoulders)? Or just a regular 2-lane road with interstate signage?
It really is a beautiful stretch of road. I was there in 1999, but like a fool, drove most of it after dark!! One of my biggest regrets....
I realized something when the sun's glare revealed the dirt on your windshield, that your camera focuses on the windshield and all that beautiful landscape down the road is out of focus, greatly limiting the potential of the 720p resolution.
Maybe you can force the cam to focus on a further point ?
@perikles72: Hey there, thanks for watching! As for the camcorder, I no longer have the one that I filmed this with (Canon HF 200). Definitely not the greatest camcorder (poor image stabilization and subpar performance in poor lighting situations, two things I was shocked to discover after purchasing it).
just drove that 2 weeks ago... its one of the most scenic places ive been to! and all of the rock formations just after the canyon are really beautiful...
@FreewayBrent Yes actually we drove along Interstate 70 all the way to Denver and i saw the most amazing scenery ever. Theirs nothing like driving on Intersate 70 in Utah and Colorado they are truly one of a kind. I actually went on a week long trip from my house in South Lake Tahoe to Las Vegas and to Denver. I was inspired to take Interstate 70 by watching your videos and seeing the amazing scenery. Thank you FreewayBrent!!!
great video. Next time we will try to explore the area. We usually take the I-15 going down south to L.A. And I'm getting familiar with the geography. I have google map / google earth on another window open as I watch your video.. lol.
@g1cast: You really need to drive I-70 out to Denver. THE BEST freeway drive in the entire country. Well worth the time and money, if you can afford both.
Wow, that looks like an awesome drive. I'm glad this footage worked out for you. I was seriously considering using this song for my soon to be released FL 836 and I-395 video but chose something entirely different. Great work!
@CosmoPhotography: Salina Canyon looks a lot better (and more imposing) in person, trust me on this. I decided to use this footage to test out the visual look of inserting a shadow box surrounding all the text in my annotations, as well as converting to lower-case letters for all appropriate words. Looks better, IMO.
@FreewayBrent Agreed, the lowercase is much easier on the eyes. Yes, I should have it up by tomorrow morning. I played around with some new filters and boosted the levels to bring out the true colors. It looks really cool, I have to say.
Man! I've always wanted to drive on I-70!!!!

@interstateruler: It doesn't seem like YouTube processed my previous response. Anyway, thanks for watching! You're a retired truck driver?
