  • Levinson. Was he a run of the mill white racist? Sounds like it.

  • mongols treated Han like shit, according to history.

  • lol mongols were killed like pigs during ming and qing dynasties

  • YO WAKEMAN, IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUT DAVID L. KEENAN IS THE BEST CHINA SCHOLAR OF ALL TIME. OF ALL TIME!!!!!

(but really, his accent is way better. jus' sayin'.)

  • What a bullshit and nonsense this Professor is talking about. Hard to believe if UC Berkeley has such as a "professor".

  • You Mongols and Turks better shut up! You should be thankful that the PRC is treating your people with kindness and allowing you the opportunity to succeed in our country. Yet time and time again you continue to bite the hand that feeds you. Be ware that the Chinese government will eventually lose patience at your recurring petulance!

  • @ILike2DrinkAlot please feed ur billion with meat first then talk shit

  • @mongolhuuhed Nah we'd rather take your land and resources and force your people to assimilate. It's what we do best :)

  • @ILike2DrinkAlot Chink in the state. I bet you wont fit or survive in ur mainland

  • LOL who knew that a western historian of Chinese history could cause such a ruckus amongst China hating trolls? They go as far as trying to discredit his academic work all while hiding behind a computer anonymously. Can anything be more amusing?

  • Chinese Milk is Sprouting Boobs On Babies.China communist is making

a strange milk.they want to make mutation???i know china is doing human expeliments in Tibet though.

  • Fukc u jungua

  • Apparently, this biased "barbarian" scholar passed away in Sep 2006. He is biased against Mongols and Manchus because his wife is nan-ren - a short, dark skinned, piggy nosed, pigmy from Southern China.

  • Wakeman was a great scholar. And you? You're a loser who attacks people anonymously on the web because you have nothing better to do. And his wife is more than a nan-ren. She's a scholar of Italian culture and a cosmopolitan woman of the world.

  • It is legitimacy backed up by guns. Nothing wrong with that, any modern govt. even a democratic one got to have guns for support or itself holding guns.

  • china was part of the manchu and mongol empires. korea once dominated china. does that make china a part of korea today? nope. why not? guns. that's why tibet, east turkestan, mongolia and manchuria are today a part of the chinese empire: guns, not legitimacy....guns and a complaisant west.

taiwan considers itself as the SOVEREIGN republic of china.

  • I agree with you! China proper is the south of the great wall. Tibet, Eastern Turkestan. Southern Mongolia, manchuria are occupied lands.

  • chinese han and tang dynasties controlled xinjiang and mongolia BEFORE yuan mongols and qing mongols ruled china. and manchuria was part of chinese ming dynasty

  • Chinese Han and Tang did not control Mongolia and east turkestan. Look at the Great Wall whivh was started in Qin dynsaty. The south of the Great Wall is Chinese territory, and the north is Mongolian territory. You can not find any more visible proof than the Great Wall- 200o years old and 400 miles long structure that separates Chinese from Mongolians. I know many Chinese are brainwashed by Communist party progaganda department.

  • LOL, the current great wall was built by the MING dynasty which was AFTER mongol rule

  • @HuiHuiWanSui

No! Only the part north of Beijing - Badaling, and so on. Many were built 2000 years ago. The border between northern Nomads and Chinese peasants is the Great wall.

  • after getting their assese beaten, the eastern turks and khitan recognized Tang Taizong as the "heavenly khan". walls do not mean shit. the romans built hadrian's wall in britian, yet after that they advanced beyond the wall and conquered half of scotland

  • @HuiHuiWanSui

That is what Chinese communist party propaganda department officials together with this Wakeman, a perfect propaganda official, told you. I understand why Chinese are desperate to hide their humuliations and defeat at the hands of Northern nomads for thousands of years. You--Chinese are NOt good at war. Your history is the history of defeat and humiliation at the hands of Huns, Turks, Mongols, manchus, British, Japanese (1930s), Russians (1969) and V'etnamese (1979)!

  • LOL, dum turk cracker, read your history again, western historians agree that tang dynasty assraped the gokturk khaganate and that tang taizong was given the title heavenly khan

vietnam was ruled for over 1,000 years by china, chinese military captured soviet tanks in 1969, and hui general ma zhongying killed thousands of russian invaders in the 1930s

  • We are the world!

Pls stop messing up to claim this and that!

All beings are passengers of this planet earth!

Should not we care more about Planet Earth?

  • since when does "inheritance" rob a people of their destiny?

  • thanks man, i'll check it out

In any case, it's a delight for me to discuss this video; I've always been fascinated about the Mongols/xiung-nu/other so-called "B"-word tribes, and their relationship with the majority Han thoughout history

  • freidman, "Chinese today are not taught about the actual history of Taiwan and its relations with imperial dynasties, the ROC and the CCP. They have no idea how recently invented is the CCP fiction that Taiwan has always been part of China."

  • This is only one viewpoint of a historian.

  • Comment removed

  • taiwan calls ITSELF Republic of china, it claims ITSELF as a province of china, not the CCP

  • As the Canadian Legation, Chungking, China advised Ottawa in 1944: there is no doubt that official China is determined to swallow Sinkiang, Tibet, Outer Mongolia, Kansu and Sikang, no matter what the people living in those regions may feel about the matter. The Legation added: The Chinese do not see that the attempt to compel the Tibetans to allow themselves and their country to be incorporated as an integral part of China is most definitely an act of aggression.

  • agreed~~

i forgot to include on the 'exlude' list above: the Island of Treasures, of course =)

Who's going in and "help" these potentially independent 'countries' is up to debates though. I'd imagine those territories (tibet, xingjian, mongolia, parts of the southwest too) would 'sell like hot cakes', as they say it here =) It'll be very interesting to see if indeed that'd happen in the future and what would "China Proper" do about that~~

  • This is a view point of a legation from a certain country only.

USA at that time considered all those territores belonged to China. Many old maps in the past put these territores as Chinese Empire.

  • I agree that the Mongol shouldn't be called "Barbarian" in that sense, but i guess we'd have to rewrite all of the "other" wolrd history books as well if we use that sentiments to guide our academia/knowledge libraries~~

Btw, China have already 'opened' to the 'west' as far back as the Han, and most noticeably (can with PROVE to back it up =-), the TANG ~~

  • tkdd, kublai khan was emperor of all his conquests, including china.

china has been ruled by "barbarians" since the sung.

    interesting article:

Testimony of Professor Edward Friedman to the United States China Commission,

    Washington D.C. April 14, 2005

    Chinese Nationalism and American Policy

"Modern Chinese Han nationalism silently lays claim to the conquered territories of that recent expansionist Manchu empire. It is an imperial nationalism presented in a discourse of anti-imperialism."

  • If you wanna go that far back, why not go back to the WuHu & Sixteen Kingdoms (300's - 400's AD) Numerous collections of different tribes from the Asian steppes from the North rule for a couple of yrs here and there right after the "Jin" Dynasty. I do agree on your suggest that CCP lay claims to "recent" territories aquired in the Qing

  • ..but how far back in history should one 'country' (of which China certainly have a different idea about that than the usual European nation-state) go back to 'claim' her lands?

Even though like many, being personally connected to the "Middle Kingdom" through an immigrant family to america in childhood, I always ponder this question. I fantasized that the 'proper' China should excluded north (anything mongolia-related), tibet/xinjiang/don't know enough about "Qinghai" to judge (west)..

  • The real Han-dominated chinese-'fertile crescent', if you will, will always be what they called "China Proper" (aka, the easter/southern regions); however, it's very important to keep in mind it's just a childhood speculation of mine decades ago...duno enough to make a judgement, and of course, when i ask any real Chinese persons (holding chinese passports, ethnically/culturally chinese), the answer's always gonna be.."it's all China" I have my doubts as a none-chinese though(politically)

  • Modern Chinese Han nationalism did not need to silently laid claim to the conquered territories, they can speak out loud that the Qing territores were inherited by the Chinese Republic (ROC), Qing court signed agreement to transfer their rule and ownership of these territores to the new ROC govt. provided that the 5 main ethnics were treated as equals in the new nation. There hardly been any slaughter in the Qing court and Royal family.

The last Qing emperor stayed living in the forbiden city.

  • @The Mongol 005

Whoever one's wife is an alien (foreigner), he is bound to be a spy for his wife's country - is that really a logical statement ?

  • The early Qing emperors advocated Hans and Yi (non-Hans ) were actually of one family in China or Tianhsia (all under heaven).

In late Qing period when confronting western powers' military interventions the Qing emperor considered themselves as Chinese like Hans but the western whites as barbarians (Western Yi ).

  • Qing and Yuan are Chinese dynasties because these two terms are Chinese characters denoted the Chinese dynasty names.

Kublai Khan was the first Mongol king decided to became a Chinese Emperor and followed all the Chinese rituals of an emperor. He also decided to record official Chinese history of the previous Chinese dynasty. He didn't impose normadic administration culture in China proper but more or less followed Chinese adminstration structure. The Chinese civil service exam. maintained.

  • There was never such a thing chinese empire or emperior. Becuase they never conqured no body but among themselves.

  • There is no such a thing YUan Dynasty or QuingDynasty. History of this period of times belongs to Mongol and Manchu people. You should talk about how Mongols and manchu people lived in china and ruled them. There is no such a thing called chinese history during this time because there was country in the world called china. You also should know not only about how Mongols and Manchus killed chinese but why we killed them.

  • This guy's wife is chinese? he is probably chinese spy. All these (mostly northern nomadic) empires had their own culture and rules, customs. But chinese adopted all these cultures and now presenting them to the world as thier own. And they are really skillfully using dudes like this PHD. 95% of the chinese history was writting in last 50 years by CCP.

  • Mongolians are not barbarians ever!!!

  • listen...just who the hell are barbarians? the cultureless savages? i mean if the other civilazations were so greatly developed then, why couldnt they outsmart the "barbarians", if they had the right to call us barbarians then they should've been smarter and stronger than mongols right?.. its so sad that the call the mongols barbarians when they cant win them, givin stupid names and crap....

  • the term barbarian is loosely used in this context as it was traditionally described.

in my opinion, the lesser cultured neighbor (esp. if they r aggressive) is always considered the barbarian.

basically tribes who lack a formal code of law, lacks finesse in culture, inhabit harsher more hostile geographic areas (hence perhaps why they harassed their agricultural neighbors).

  • Obviously he was not using the Latin meaning of the word Barbarian, and you know it. The word Barbarian or Barbaric means (check any dictionary)uncultured person or uncivilized, also brutal, cruel or undeveloped etc. He was speaking in English, not in Latin, so one should stick to its "modern" meaning and not "Latin" meaning. What is here so difficult to understand? I might be ignorant, but don't tell me that he's used the word in its Latin meaning. Nobody does these days, except you maybe.

  • He'd have better also mentioned the positive consequences of the Mongol Empire or Yuan Empire, at least, just to keep the balance. Anything has its plus and minuses and one should never go to one side describe things one-sided. Feel sorry for this Professor and the fact that he's been an extraordinary Chinese scholar would not excuse him for being biased on this historical issue.

He talks about raping local women by Mongols! Poor thing! Who did not rape women in their occupied countries?

  • It was a highly biased presentation. Prof. Frederic Wakeman described the entire situation during the Yuan Empire as disaster and called the occupier, Mongols, as Barbariens. What is the definition of barbarien anyway? People who do occupying and killing? Well then French people with Napoleon as leader and Germans with Hitler should be also called as Barbariens. Or they should be called more sedentary Barbariens.

So this Professor thinks that the Mongols were uncultured and uncivilized.

  • Barbarian meant foreigner in latin. I think you are very ignorant compared to the person in the video

  • lol

  • Who the fuck is this? Mongols were ever evil huh? Fuck this...this is history! Fuck china.

  • This is highly biased. Mongol awaken those arrogant chinese who considered themselves as the most civilized people and treated the mongols as slaves. Mongol proved that they were no less than the Chinese, even superior. Also it was mongol rule which help facilitate the transfer of technology from the east to west and vice versa. This lifted Europe from the dark with imported technology from the east.

  • what u mean Chinese treated Mongols as slaves. Mongols were never slaves, dude! And Chine must be so lucky that Mongols didn't care about them much and therefore didn't destroy them.

  • @dukeassa Losing half your country and the majority of your citizens today (Inner Mongolia) isn't exactly what I would call free now is it?

  • @daldbaatar Im sorry if i have offended anyone by this offensive comment. Im truly sorry for my ignorance.

  • how much did he get paid by ccp???

  • ccp?

  • why is it brilliant?

  • brilliant!
