Alright. I'm using blender 2.49a I open up the skeleton I import the model I position it I rig it (bone heat) It works fine in pose mode I take the bones out of pose mode and into object mode I select the model I click on make real I export as collada 1.4 with triangles and "selected only" chosen I import into SL It gives me a "Dae parsing issue" error ARRRRRRRRRRRRRGH WHAT AM I DOING WRONG
great vid and great av..the orange one. but for some reason when i do this my model become spaghetti. any help? and im a seasoned 3D guy. im probably just doing something n00b.
Ok you must be using an older version of blender for this cause its not doing half the things you said it should do "Hold down CTRL and press P" does bring up a menu BUT it doesnt look like yours and it says Select Amature Deform, and there is no secondery menu to select "Creat from bone heat"....and for the life of me i couldnt see any button that said MAKE REAL???? can you do this tutorial on an updated version of Blender please??
@sgoobysnacks29 I've figured it out. WHen pressing control p, select automatic weights. When exporting the file as Collada.dae, make sure to check "Export for SecondLife" in the left pane.
Followed this step by step, got as far as uploading it into SL. Once I hit SL, it just will not work. The mesh itself uploads at it should but the rigging part is not working at all. :/

@gameexe, thanks man! I found that it's something upload preview on weights that crashed me. I just stoped checking preview and did weights and joints on upload options. All that counts anyway lol. That worked though!
@gameexe yea I had to start all over again in Maya. I got character in world but it was acting all messed up. Maya barely works for me as well, but I had to make sure I didn't move the skeletons pelvis any where or breaks the rig. =/
So, i followed the instructions and got the mesh moving with the bones in blender. Exported to Collada 1.4 as instructed, but when trying to upload i get the error "The model contains no meshes. NewAgentInventory_InvalidAsset" as well as the issue Xuphor described. The mesh uploaded fine before i rigged it.
did you try uploading with the beta or the project viewers asides from the official viewer? LL loves to screw up the mesh uploader every month so i have like 4 viewers installed for uploading diferent kind of meshes since some meshes wont upload with one viewer ad others wont upload with the other viewer
@RancidMaz - my friend i've been trying to get this to work for a week. Tried with belender 2.5x with the bone copy weights script, and it crashes. Tried with beleder 2.49b, and it fails to export, comes up with an error in the python script... pffff... this guy makes it look easy, i cannot follow this any closer [watched it 15 times or so over the week, but i STILL cannot get a colada 1.4 .dea file onto my desktop [pulls at what hair he has left]
Sorry, but now I have a problem I can't figure out. I followed your steps exactly, but when I try to import, it says in SL: "Missing required level of detail" Any idea?
Everytime I click Create From Bone Heat, I get this error: "bone heat weighting: failed to find solution for one or more bones" Any help? I used a .obj just as you did.
i followed all your steps, but once i get to secondlife and i try to upload it, the weight skin and joints options are gray and can't be checked, how do i fix this?
is there a way to find out how many polygons you're using or the limit to the poly's on the mesh? thats the only issue im having at the moment, that and it appears that a lot of the objects on the actual mesh are inside out, I've tried flipping and normalizing the faces but nothing works.
exelent tutorial btw.hi im using the updated version of blender. it seems to be missing sum of the menues in your tutorial. none the less i was still able to upload the mesh but when i make the joints show it turns mangled. i dont know how to get my meshes to be normal. also the upload menu on sl appears different even on prodject viewer. can any1 help?
yeah join positions dont export right in blender 2.5 cuz sl uses colada 1.4 and blender 2.5 saves to colada 1.4.1 or 1.5 or something like that so the joint positions get screwed up till LL upgrade the uploader, if you wanna export joint positions, use the older version of blender
Im gonna ask here cause it seems other people get questions answered.
When i go to export my model (wich i made and it is a 3ds model) after following all the steps, i go to make it a .dae file usuing export, and i get an error OR blender just crashes, and its gotten so annoying, what can i do to fix this or what could be the possible problem? ive been trying for about a week or so now to export it.
I'm using blender 2.5.. After I select my skeleton and model, I hold control, then I press p, however I can only select Armature deform, there is no create from bone heat. I select that, however, when I upload it doesn't show the mesh that I've created, it only shows the SL avatar parts if I forgot to delete them. Also, is there a way to mirror a build, say pants, if they are different front and back without having them turn inside out, so they are invisible to the outside...
hi, i wonder if you could help me. i made a rigged mesh in blender, the weight painted it to make sure that it animated right in blender. but when i wear it, it comes out deformed. i tried both with skin weight checked and unchecked. any ideas how i can fix it? (i used the rig from simplebot on my mesh)
It must be outdated, nice tutorial... but the rigging doesn't work. I've followed every single step until I go to upload it where I then get: "Missing Required Level of Detail" Which is strange, since I uploaded the mesh without rigging it. But when I do rig it, I get this error.
@MKER2 Normally I would get this "missing level of detail" when I go to the first upload state, then it takes a little while to load, then it shows....I suggest to just be patient and wait a little while.
@RainyChief also make sure you have done the mesh tutorial questionaire thingy in your account thing on the website, it wont give u the option the upload meshes until youve done that
Can you edit the skeleton so that it fits the avatar like if it is a 4 legged avatar could you rearrange the skeleton to be 4 legged or do you have to keep the skeleton the same and animate it to be 4 legged
you can attach anything to them like you would attach things to regular avatars, but they cannot wear the clothing layer textures (clothes that are basically drawn on the avatar's body) you can wear mesh clothes instead
when i export it as colada 1.4 it says to "check console for more info" and on top says "please install full version of python" i'm having trouble understanding what that means. please help me. oh and thanks for making this video its awesome.
it means what it says, you have to install python, its the thing that most blender's functions and plugins run on, go to the site you downloaded blender for and check under the version you downloaded, it should say compiled with python 6.2 or some other version depending on your version of blender, you have to download and install the same version of python as was used to compile your version of blender, google for it i dont know the url
Thank you so much for the video. Question, when I go to rig the skeleton to the model I get this error. "Bone Heat Weighting : Failed to find a solution for one or more bones." I've been (and will continue to) looking for a solution for hours, but I feel like I'm hitting a brick wall. So I figured it can't hurt to ask.
@gameexe Hi again, as far as i read about it on the blogs and Beta meetings it will be implemented in a short period of time. As i understand the wanted to implement it sooner but there seems to be a few bugs there are working on now. So far I more then enjoy the beta and i really hope this will revive second life and draw people back in. Maybe just maybe if the do it right it can still hit the mainstream. I remain optimistic about the future of SL. Thank you for your reply.
i kinda thought it looked self explanitory, he purpose of riging is to replace that horible avatar body with one of your own or have proper clothes that you actualy wear and not just a thing drawn on your body and a bunch of prims atached. one piece avatars that arent made out of 3278347856 sculpts that lag everyone to death and just look akward in the joints.
as for the spacesuit, you can get it when mesh is released on the main grid (since its a mesh avatar)
fantastic! thank you so much i have been struggling to get this sorted and that.. tiny little button makereal was all i was really missing... i found no mention of it whatsoever anywhere i searched
Cool tut ! there is also a pretty descent one that came out before the beta release by machinimatrix, it's quick but enough to understand how it works in blender. I feel you when u talk about the lack of help between beta users, but I think teaching is a skill apart, and many people regardless of their level aren't just good at it. teaching is also very time consuming and often requires more patience than creating. Without blaming others for "keeping secrets", congrats for making this tut.
Awsome, thank you! How's actually modelling in blender though? If you're completely new then is it all the same regardless of your program choice? Or would I be better off learning with Metasequoia?
