@omar51196 If I wanted to listen to rainbow then I would, this isnt opeth at all. Their last tour they didnt do a single heavy song which dissapointed me greatly because katatonia which is my second favorite band of all time was there and i wanted to hear katatonia being melodic and opeth heavy
@guitar7901 Well yeah it is dissapointing to be promised for something and didnt get it, but to me I like the album so that Damnation which was really soft ! Opeth is a progressive band, they change. But be sure this was`nt the end of the old Opeth.
@omar51196 Akerfeldt has hinted numerous times that it isnt the end, watershed was suppose to be all mellow, but they ended up adding the lotus eater which is one of my favorites by them
the only thing that i think is missing on this album is a 15+ minute song of this masterpiece .. a song with a very long and emotional solo pink floyd style
For those people complaining about how they're not heavy anymore...Opeth aren't a band about being heavy...they've always been a progressive band. This is a great addition to their sound, even though I like their older stuff better.
Sounds a lot like Rainbow, which isn't suprising when you know that it's supposed to be a Dio tribute and that Akerfeld is a big fan of Ritchie Blackmore.
@TheCaplocks Funny you should mention Ian Anderson. I had my 54 year old dad listen to this album, and he said, "Hey, is that Ian Anderson singing for a metal band now?!?!?!" I replied, "No, there's no rock flute." hahahahaha
@DreamPurpleFloyd well yes, also at their concert they did mention (very clearly) it was a rip off of Kill The King XD they wrote it right after his death
this album makes Opeth more 'accessible' to my brain. I always loved the music, but couldn't handle the growling vocals, made my throat hurt...sorry for those 'hardcore' fans that think this is 'wimpy', but opens new doors for listeners, thanx guys....
@nazzare79 Reading some of the background interviews and such, they were trying to explore their musical background (their "Heritage" if you will). Innovation wasn't really their aim anyway.
@DeIMarrrrr You think this is the "new Opeth"? I was under the impression that this album was kind of just a break. I hope they go back to some heavier stuff too, but this is pretty damn cool too.
@DeIMarrrrr I wish they'd have settled for a sound like Ghost Reveries. That album had it all. I wonder if Michael burned out his vocal chords or something. I heard that the last tour was just as growl-free as Heritage.
Yeah! Ghost Reveries was a fair middle between "new" Opeth and their death roots. But, on the other hand it's rare for a band to be able to change their sound so drastically AND keep old fans interested. All around great band, one of the very best I've ever heard.
@DeIMarrrrr That's interesting , most people i know liked Opeth and if their music taste was weird enough they stemmed into Ayreon. I personally got into Opeth first too , but then i found Loser - Ayreon , found it bizarre for a minute , hell got into it after the fiddling bit =P
goddamn people this is a tribute to ronnie james dio, mikael said it himself in the gig where i were.. he also joked that this is a ripoff.. don't take it too seriously, after all, this is a fucking amazing song.. deal with it!
@MikeTheGuy00 Of course not. Opeth is alive and well, and still (unlike some legends i know.) Dio is a legend and he'll be missed, but I seriously doubt that this is the only tribute song out there for someone as influencial as he was.
Sorry to say, but Opeth deserves a tribute more. Even though this is their own song, I was just making a joke.
Dio will be missed. Calm down. Opeth is amazing enough to get a tribute song dead. (Since last I checked, you don't have to die to get one.)
@KainShadow HAHA! I have the CD playing on my car, and as soon as I heard the intro I was "Fuck, this sounds like Rainbow!". Especially the solo is really like Ritchie Blackmores playing (sounds like the "Burn" solo intro to me or something)!
Hated this song at first, but fuck man my ears cant lie to me. This shit rocks. I agree that this is an awesome live song, they even have a nice hammond organ solo after the guitar solo.
@metallitrooper : Yeah, they are very cool ! I've checked Fredrick's hand, i've seen Mickael in my city with squash rackets (héhé) and speaked with Fredrick and Mendez in the street !!!!! And seriously this song ROCKS live, mickael jumps everywhere, do the twist (yes he does)... Awesome show !!
@metallitrooper That's fuckin kick ass man! I bet that was nuckin futs!!! I have a James Hetfield pick from when I seen Metallica in Detroit '09 Found it right on the damn ground when the lights flashed haha But I didn't meet any of them, and and the same time I wouldn't want to anyway. Now, Opeth is a different story!!
@Susyownsyou I didnt know either. Look up stargazer. You will not be disappointing. Dio's vocals makes it amazingly epic. Reminds me of Kashmir by Zep, so if you enjoy that, you will love stargazer. Im not much of a fan of the rest of rainbows stuff though...
@Susyownsyou Rainbow is one of the bands Ronnie James Dio was in before he went solo, and also before he joined Black Sabbath. If you really want to have a laugh check our Elf, hell, even stuff pre-Elf if you can find it. VERY very different than what most of the world is used to hearing from the man.
@DennChooch That's right. Mikael did in fact say that when I saw them play live matter of fact. It's just that I'm so proud that Opeth created this rocking masterpiece in (Ronnie James) Dio's memory. :)
