  • Great kata. I must learn it.

  • It is interesting that some young inexperienced know it all has said here that this performance was not graceful. How graceful do you need to be to defend yourself in a real encounter? Goju is not necessarily a graceful style when compared to some of the Chinese systems. It is a very functional style, which is more important.

  • @Ronin6575 Oh, and you are. To bash someone over a comment like that is not very humble at all. And if you must know, my Sensei is a direct student of Morio Higaonna; that means he learn't everything from him, and believe me all his kata's from Saifa upwards are very fluid. Mind you his system of karate may not be from Naha-te, and more for competition.

  • @slapnut892 I am in fact, qualified to judge this and other katas. I have been a judge and referee in past decades and have 47 years of training and teaching behind me.

  • @Ronin6575 Then you out of most people will understand that it is not very humble to bash someone over such a simple statement on the internet. If a Martial Arts practitioner is not open to friendly criticism, then how can he\she improve; after all are you not being criticized by your instructor, and even lower grades who may see or know something you don't every time you train. I for one, am open to any criticism I can get to help me improve, that's the way of Martial Arts. You should know that

  • this makes the ATA look like a buncha pussies

  • beautiful

  • I'm a white belt because I do not do the test, but I know 11 katas learned in class 10, the heian 4, 6 Goju Ryu, but more that I learned on youtube xD

  • So long since I've seen Kururunfa performed like that

    Love it

  • Nice but not very graceful. Please take that as constructive criticism not negative.

  • @slapnut892 And you are qualified to judge this performance?

  • Excellent kata. Fast, precise, powerful. I study Goju and boy do I have a lot to strive towards. It's a terrific martial art- a combination of hard and soft (which is what goju means actually). Osu!

  • FUCKIN PERFECT!

  • Greetings... a very elegant Kata

  • awesome.

  • YOU LOOK VERY SHARP IN KURURUNFA

  • so graceful yet hard at the same time.

  • Awesome! Some very nice details as well.Thank You. Arigato. Oss.

  • great work! And Looks wonderful!

  • I practice Goju Ryu. Io pratico Goju Ryu.

  • Excelent! Thank you!

  • parece um biba vai fazer kata direito da goju-kai

  • Ossu! Excellent demonstration of the style Goju Ry through kata kururunfa is very good to know that some preserve this wonderful art through time, as Goju Ryu is one of five styles of martial arts most powerful in the world and one of the most popular in the middle the martial arts, congratulations to the author of the video and who showed you in the tub is an excellent technique Ossu! Domo Arigato Gozaimassu!

  • me gusto su kata sr.

    soy de puerto montt Chile.

  • looks like shito ryu to me...

  • no è il vero goju

  • Good work.

  • can someone tell me who is the karateka? thanks

  • woow that was great =o

I have to learn this kata

man this seems to be a hard one

  • excellent balance between movements and technics , an outstanding performance

  • icely done kata indeed. Good demo of hard/soft moves.

  • F here alone and bored and horny 9

  • awesome!

  • Very good one!

  • cool

  • Not Meibukan, as I practice. Pretty close. No Kiai on the front kicks, Meibukan signature. Slow on the wrist block followed by the block, push, uppercut. Uppercut is supposed to be faster that the feet, hand supposed to be quicker than foot, also signature of Meibukan(hands and feet work together). Difficult to get the concept into your head let alone master. Cat stance at the end not Meibukan. Only 5-10% weight, front foot, heel turned slightly outward, front leg protects the groin.

  • very poor kata is not as originally performed the kata is performed without thought of the fight blocks do not cover the body power is not with kime good actor of movement thats is all not a true warrior

  • hey mc, i looked for you video, didnt see one

  • This is one of the most flawless kata executions ever

  • too good

  • I have to say something. This is from the documentary "The Three Major Styles of OKinawan Karate", obviously, no one has seen it critiquing this like the YouTube Martial Arts experts you all think you are. This was filmed in Okinawa in a Meibukan Goju Ryu Dojo. Meibukan is not a "version" of Goju Ryu. Meibukan IS Goju Ryu!It is NOT Shito Ryu, it is not WKF, and this is not a "kid" that any of you could hold a candle to and should be criticizing.

  • but robert is it not valid and appropriate for

goju karateka who know a kata to make comments

on the kata posted on utube ?

surely we can all benefit from sensible criticism . .

  • It is inappropriate for certain groups to think there's is the only version. A student of IOGKF looks at a Meibukan kata or one of Toguchi and says it is not goju because it does not match their version. Therefore, not knowing that there are other versions, call it Shito Ryu

  • The reply is aimed at the uneducated who make such comments. Commenting on the video or those in the video without even knowing anything about the video is well...commonplace here on youtube. But wrong nevertheless

  • It is dubbed in French. The original is in English.

There are 3 pages of comments here...my comments are not aimed at those of late or those who have valid comments. Check out the earlier posts. There are several posting here that really bug me with their ignorance.

  • excellent interpretation this kata..

like to see that long belt move tho..

  • What do you say:- I have seen a lot of kata and by some of the best.. They shadow on this.. Grace , strength .

  • I would not say that the pace is what we use in our Ryu Syo Kai dojo, but what is the context of the video - for show, demo? I have seen other videos other goju schools where sepai takes 2 minutes, but I am sure the pace in that vid was slowed for demo purposes. This person in Okinawa is very smooth.

  • your sound system sucks!

  • The patch from this practitioner is from the Ryusyokai-direct member from Meibukan. Style is as traditional and Okinawan as it gets. People don't realize that there are two forms of Goju-Okinawa based as taught by Meibukan and then the rest of the world as taught by Morio Sensei, Chinen Sensei, Yamaguchi Sensei, etc. Ask anyone in the Okinawan Karate Association, they'll tell you who owns traditional Okinawan Goju-Ryu as taught by Miyagi Chojun Sensei, they'll point to Meibukan and Ryusyokai.

  • No one does, as the designated heir fell during the last days of the Battle of Okinawa. So no organisation or dojo 'owns' goju ryu.

  • Umm... you are forgetting Shoreikan Goju...Which was founded by Toguchi Sensei.. Some of us still carry on the tradition of his branch of Miyagi sensei's Goju...

  • I was trying to add this to 44knights post below. As far as this video.....This sensei is very good and I am glad to see such quality is still out there. Traditionalist must carry on..

  • A far cry from Meitoku Yagi's kururunfa. Surely not Meibukan.

  • He's wearing the RyuSyokai patch, which was founded by Seneha Sensei. He is a Ku Dan under the late Meitoku Yagi, and was senior to both Meitetsu, and Meitatsu Yagi Sensei.

Those of you that say that this is not Okinawan Goju, need to get out of the box, and research, there are many other schools of Goju besides the Jundokan, and IOGKF, both which were influenced by the JKF Goju Kai. Do your research!

  • David, yes Ryusokai is Okinawan, but this kata looks like more like Shitoryu to me (!)...

And I have to disagree that the Jundokan (or IOGKF) were influenced by the JKF Goju Kai (?!?!?!); I opine that is is clearly the other way around (just look at the current JKF Goju Kai kata method, which largely follows the Jundokan form...)

  • Bryson, I will reply in private, as I have no place in internal politics within these organizations.

  • @seagoju Sadly, the practitioner doing the kata is also a tournament champion. Thus he tends to do it more in the manner of the Shite Kata regulation style than what we do in the Ryusyokai. Interestingly enough, he hasn't trained at the dojo for years either. That's my assumption as to why the kata looks so different from what you (and I) are used to seeing in Okinawa.

  • @okinawagojuryu I like how you said "get out of the box" Have you learned the kata shihohai?

  • No, why?

  • @okinawagojuryu Jundokan was, if anything, where many of Chojun Miyagi's direct students, including Miyazato (Jundokan founder), Koshin Iha, Anichi Miyagi etc trained in after his death. Miyagi, and Miyazato after him were dead against JKF style kumite or tournament kata. Miyazato, in his book, criticised the direction modern sports karate is heading and how it made no sense the way kata had been changed.

  • The IOGKF was set up in 1979 by Morio Higaonna with the support of Anichi Miyagi, Arakagi, Kina and other senior Ex-Jundokan members, with the express purpose of teaching Goju-Ryu as they believed how Chojun Miyagi taught. In other words, the IOGKF was set-up specifically to be a contrast to JKF Goju-kai. You couldn't have chosen two branches of Okinawan Goju-ryu more opposed to JKF than these two.

  • @Pecherin72 The two branches you are talking about is IOGKF and OGKK am I correct?

  • There are different anglicized spellings for this kata, but it is the same kata

  • I thought it was just called Kurunfa? I've seen this IRL once before, a ni-dan at my dojo demonstrated it. This one is quite showy...not so much circular motion and smooth techniques during the slow parts, it's quite aggressive. Still, the part with the really fast hand movements is still awesome. xD;

  • kanji in chinese, mandarin, fuzhow-hua, okinawan, japanese read;

JIOOU LIOUR DUHN POH, JIU LIU DUN PO, KEW LIEW TONG PO, KU[orKYU] RU[orRYU] RUN FA, HISA YAME TOME HA..

    thus; 'KURURUNFA' [FA = "FAA"]

if you leave out kanji you miss meaning..

  • elbow attack just like bajiquan, except without the stomping

  • "this showboating stuff" - krustofogus

hahahahaha, oh sweet naive amateur, if only you had some of the many possible bunkai from this kata demonstrated on you, this...showboating stuff...would kill you! :P:P

  • what language is the narrator speaking in?

  • very mumbling French.

  • I prefer the traditional style as per Chinen Sensei. I don't like this showboating stuff

  • if, Chinen Sensei is your Sensei, you should ask him what he thinks of your 'showboating'..

  • I don't know if this is a Goju Ryu kata but I practice Shito ryu and I do this kata like in the video.

  • It's not usually called a side kick, it's a downward kick. Kansetsu Geri in not classed as a sokuto/yoko geri.

  • Having looked at it again, i'd say it's more Shitoryu style, as many WKF katas are nowadays.

  • The way kata is performed at WKF tournaments is to have pauses, this works for many of the shuri-te katas but in Naha-te katas it just destroys the meaning and corrupts the style. This kata is not too good if judged from a Goju-ryu perspective.

  • This is one of the Kata which I could not complete learning in 1978 at Hong Kong Seigokan school. My master was Mr.Lam won sun. It was a great to see again and learn. Thank you for posting this great video.I'm also proud to learn that Seigokan and GojuRyu is two brothers school and Grand Master Miyagi Chojun Sensei was the father.

  • The lineage of the school where this guy comes from is pretty straight and is renown for keeping to the traditional forms as taught by Miyagi Chojun Sensei. This is evident in schools like the Ryusyokai and Meibukan. There is a difference in forms and foundation in the kai form where most of Goju is known throughout the world. Regardless of how many years you have, you'll always have an opinion if you were taught Okinawan based vs Japan based Goju.

  • i trained japanese and okinawan goju and have

an opinion.. theres good and bad everywhere..

there are -principles- in all kata versions..

different empnasis, based perhaps on oyo bunkai favoured or in actual use at the time..

we can all learn from everything..

even a child can notice something we miss..

  • I have practised Okinawan Goju-ryu for 23 years. This is very good kata, but it isn't Okinawan goju-ryu, it is Shitoryu influenced WKF/WKA version, same as the Wakai version. But it is very very good.

  • Mr. NewEnglandBudo, I got my black belt 9years ago. I like the way this kid move. I do not agree with your comments. Posting is very very important. Especially when performing katas. There is no need to be flow with the routine but with the wrong postings. During real compact, Body positioning is a must to bring out. Actions comes out just naturally depends on how hard you work with your katas and physical trainings.

    Vais Patu

    Okinawa Koju-Ryu

    Master L-1 Champion 1996-1997

  • I whole-heartedly agree with your comment. I'm not a black belt, but am a student of Goju-Ryo karate and he is performing everything at a model standard for the Kata. Goju isn't meant to be as flowing as some martial arts. The moves and stances are supposed to be strong, keeping a great foundation as you move. He kept a perfect Neko Ashi Dachi the entire time, and his hand movements spoke of speed and power. An excellent performance.

  • actually lot of moves are supposed to flow in Goju. Goju means the hard and soft style, you block soft and strike hard. So lot of moves in Goju are real gentle.

  • 'flow more' doesnt mean melt.. it means flow more than demonstrated.. dont misinterpret

    good advice..

masters higaonna and chinen teaching our club gave advice to the highest grades the most..

not because they were poor karateka but because there is so much refinement possible..

  • Mr. Patu, it is a pretty tournament kata but not the original format that the kata was designed for. He does a technique and stops, then a technique and stops. His kata took way too long. Kururunfa by history is a fast and dynamic kata that flows. He is posing the techniques to get good marks.

Check out Higaonna or Chinen's version on my page or other found on the web.

  • They flow and root. Goju is loosing it's identity b/c of tournament gradings. I agree w/ Goju108 above. Based upon my 35 yrs. experience, this kata is not very good.

  • Or even the Pre WWII video of Kururunfa

  • Not bad, timing is off a bit at the front kick, hand parry, back fist stage. Waits too long, the kata should flow more and be less posed.

  • first of all, it was a side kick not a front kick... if u actually study martial arts u would know the difference, clearly ur just a douchebag who has little or no experience in Goju-Ruy Karate. And timing was good, he chambered his kick really well

  • He said, the front kick at the hand parry back-fist stage. Douchebag who has little or no experience in Goju-ryu karate? You are funny.

  • It's ok, pretty average if you're well travelled.

  • lovely.... i used to perform this in tournaments, but was never near as accomplished as this guy....Awesome

  • Kickass.

  • Very nice!

  • excellent indeed, i like his neko daichi stance

  • That's some good Kururunfa. Little different interpretation than I am used to on one part, but done very well.

  • excellent version of Kururunfa, thanks for posting the video.

  • This is beautiful to say the least, i have seen my Sensei perform this kata before, and it is truely a beautiful kata, this man, whomever he is, is very good.

  • very nice interpretation of kururunfa, specially the tempo, who is the karateka?

  • awesome

  • A brilliant kata. Nice to see. Hard to master.
