Some technologies chance our social norms and moral values. This, in an advanced stage, will be the sort of thing that defines the social structure and moral code of humanity. Its scary and probably wrongi i dont know if its wrong or not, not yet.. But i know this is big.. Internet kind of big.. Aeroplane, cars kind of big, probably agriculture, fire, wheel big.. If it is ever integrated into everyday life, no interaction between 2 people will be the same. Someone tell me if this is good or bad.
If the Gestapo only had this in WW II! Seriously, this will lead to the next step in our evoulution in the next coulpe of decades: a TELEPATHIC SOCIETY. Which will end war, crime (and infidelity!).
This reminds me of Orwells 1984 and the thought police, we've already big brother on cctv watching our every move, and now we've got the thought police. Google Comcast is watching you. Peace and Godbless to all.
People should read 'buyology' by Martin Linstrom if they want to know more about it!FMRI is certainly a mind opener and the technology has that weird aura of fear and and curiosity around it!!Its goin to give rise to a whole world of fear and irrationality if its gets into the wrong hands and I wonder if you are able to read our minds than how far are we away from developing a machine that programmes an appropiate response to influence those thoughts!! kinda cool though!!
Kind of makes you wish that you weren't a part of this 'technologically advanced' society. When they can tell what you want to buy and how to sell it to you, that's when it's gone way too far. What the mind entails should always remain a mystery.
The Government has been been experimenting with this technology on American citizens for long time, the abuse is out of control, using programs like "seed and weed" , "neighborhood watch", etc. the potential for abuse has reach overwhelming cries from American citizens, just write this keywords here in youtube : Organized stalking, electronic harassment, gangstalking, thanks to Bush and his Patriot act law, , for the victims (american families) mind reading is nothing new....
Dear Lesley Stahl It scares me to think that we have gone from brainwashing to mind reading. I was one of the CIA'S MKUltra victims in the late 50's in Montreal what happened to me was horrific I will be putting up a documentary of my experience on Feb 25 or 26th. it's called SUBLIMINUS We need to all pay attention to what Big Brother is doing or we will all pay a heavy price. I'm sure the CIA are financing Mind Reading to the hilt
You can be sure the CIA is financing this research to the hilt. They financed brainwashing experiments late 50's early 60's i was on of there victims in the MKUltra project
Yes and no. This is much better. But like I said above, its not something that can ever be full proof because the human mind can be trained to work differently. Also, we don't want to see politicians minds. If there ego wins, they will try and force us all to have the same brain. Might as well get a sharp brain for them to use to change us all with...
I bet if you compared statistics of these machines in 3-5 years it'd be much better than witness testimony. That has been proven to be unreliable and is usually relied on when there isn't any "hard" evidence (DNA, bullets, etc.)
Don't get me wrong, the potential for misuse is huge, but if used properly it can be extremely valuable. Like anything, we have to be smart about its applications.
No, it would not be better ever I am saying then witness testimony due to what I have said before. Not to mention it can be abused. All of these things make it less then a witness. Besides, what if a witness saw something, but the machine picked up on the criminal guy, something else. Who would be believed? :) Think about it. If the mind can be re-written like a computer, then there is many openings for mis-readings. Plus, what if there is greater conscious? Did it read that?
Well obviously the guys who are working on this know how the memories are written and that would be accounted for. And of course right now there are holes in the machine's analysis and potential for misreadings, which is why in its infancy.
My main point is that you can't stop the research now because of potential misuse in the future. By the time we (the government and public) decided that this was worthwhile to use in courts the technology will be much more reliable.
Your right, it should never be stopped. However, these guys don't know about memory lol. We still don't understand all of it. We still don't even understand how its bloody well stored! So they can only take into account what she said. What areas light up when you see something. :) If something has been manipulated, you can not tell. The brain will light up, but won't simply say, oh, I forgot this, and over righted it with this. That tec is SO far off. So I firmly disagree with you on that.
hah.... There is some BIG problems with this system. One, people can CONVINCE themselves they did something, or even over right there own memories. Two, people with OCD will think of thoughts, and not even mean it! So you can be convicted for a thought, even if you don't mean, even if its not true? Three, people can wander in there sleep. They also could find lots of things familiar. So showing a home that was robbed could be familiar. Its just to hard for it to be sound enough for proper use.
cia have reading people's minds since the 70's by placing chips in their heads.

I remember that movie from 1981 with Michael Ironside, SCANNERS (1981), about government-created telepaths.

I had an MRI a few weeks ago. It's *cough* not practical nor something to be experienced in casual activity.
But they did mention that other mechanisms of doing similar scanning are prototyped. Those, I'm more scared of.
