This "news" report is garbage. I'm not knocking the product, just the news reader.
1) Wood is not used in Haiti because it is used for fuel. 98% of this country is deforested. The place is an environmental tragedy. They have a reoccurring mudslide problem, because of the deforestation.
2) Haiti's concrete construction was typically not reinforced with steel. Steel can absorb the tensile forces that concrete can't. Chile fared better w/ their buildings and they had a 500x stronger earthquake.
