I really despise people like that. Making up new definitions for universally understood words is only one example of the kind of superior shit they pull.
I thought the UU lady was both annoying and excellent. She proved Penn to be wrong, but Penn made a strong case to defend. This is skepticism, this is what it is about. If you found the lady to not "belong" I don't think you understand what skepticism means.
I love that someone called Penn on his intolerance for tolerance. Penn often projects his Libertarian values on skeptics and not everyone agrees with his politics or his broad characterizations. For example: his rant about the use of the word "Fundamentalist" says more about HIS projections on Southern beer-drinking trailer trash, rather than what most people might actually think of when they think of the word. I like that he encourages reason, but he doesn't always practice it himself.
@mikehaarisdemoted As a Unitarian Universalist and skeptic myself, I can say that UU is absolutely more about an ethical system and having a community than it is about religion. There are religious people who are UU, but being a UU does not make someone religious. In other words, I agree with you.
what that lady is describing is NOT religion that's a philosophy or an ethos. Religion by definition is a set of beliefs based on supernatural claims.
I was once a unitarian and I was no where close to a "loony new ager". That is a huge generalization. When I was a unitarian I was looking for the truth (over time I considered myself to be part of different religions). Eventually I concluded that all religion is bullshit, no matter the beiefs. I gradually adopted an atheist philosophy, so to say, and I now consider myself to be an atheist.
Calling unitarians "loony new agers" is such a retarded judgmental generalization.
The largest group in the UUA are secular humanist. Many of them don't believe in any supernatural things. Other members do. But the group is more about bringing people with different beliefs than "new ager" beliefs.
I like how the Unitarian or whatever lady was handed her ass when Penn read her the defintion of "religion" from her own dictionary and proved that she didn't even know what it meant. I hope she's a little wiser for it now.
about the woman asking him to be less hostile to the word religion.
personally i like it, why not hijack the word religion and faith away from the dogmatic religions like they have hijacked certain words away from others, like sin and faith.
Unitarian Universalism - "broadly refers to any religion and theology that believes all persons and creatures are related to God or the divine and will be reconciled to God"
I wonder just what her motives are for insisting on the world religion. There are perfectly secular words like philosophy and even life style to otherwise describe a belief system.
Penn's reply was great, but I wish he hadn't been so apologetic. Religion by definition is superstition... If some crazy old lady doesn't want her "religion" insulted then she shouldn't be pretend to be something she's not.
Penn is really smart guy !!! This guy makes me ask my self about a whole lot of question ,and if they can do that ,and they do i call their show 100% success !!!
It's weird that so much is made of what the word religion REALLY means, as if this made up label has some kind of ultimate plantonic meaning inside it to be discovered. It doesn't contain meaning any more than a red light contains the meaning "stop"
What's important is being clear about what modes of thought and ideas you agree or disagree with. This argument seems to be about what label to put on the tin, rather than what's in the tin. Penn was clear that he is against pushing supernaturalism.
That lady got her ass handed to her. I wonder why would a person who calls herself skeptic argue over the semantic of the word religion.
Just use another term to define your set of beliefs. It's certainly better than get in discussion about how your religion is based on scientific method everytime someone says that religion is a belief in god.
You can come to the next Amaz!ng Meeting which is in June of this year. Penn & Teller will be there once again. Have a look at our website for more info.

I love the part where Penn admits he was wrong. That shows that he isn't just supporting some pseudo-skeptical dogma but that he is a true skeptic.

What she's describing as "a set of binds you live your life by" sounds a lot like morals or ethics- not religion.

benzagel 2 years ago 7
If your 'religion' is that vague (and seemingly not at all religious) you should probably not call it religion at all.
