Additionally, even where a child is "willing" or "compliant" to a pedophiles advances it does not make it okay or make it a victimless crime. The child is still harmed and it is still a terrible crime/victimization.
I would say that.....IF........Eli did indeed have the mind of a 200 year old man or woman it would make the relationship terribly perverse because the story would have instead revolved around the victimization of a child.
@pookashell21 Eli isn't. Your inability to understand such a simple plot point makes me skeptical of anything else you say. She's acting like a 12 year old the entire movie.
Please cite statistics for your facts below. Just because society condemns something doesn't make it right or wrong. Also, hardly any of the people you see on How To Catch a Predator or any of that are even pedophiles. Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children.
@SpinCycleSubmission Actually....according the Tomas Alfredson, Eli is "a very old woman in a 12 year old body". Direct quote from this video: watch?v=pqNo5akbMjo&feature=related (go to 3:30) So one could make the case Eli is a "predator" in more ways than one. ;)
@HarpoSpoke If opinions mean well, no one can actually be right and have a better opinion why even mention opinions at all if they are all equal. Some people are simply emotionally incapable of enjoying an amazing film and would prefer some crash, stale action movie. This doesn't make them 'wrong' in that they actually enjoy it more, but emotionally shallow.
@SpinCycleSubmission Logically, we should NOT mention our opinions. But we are a flawed species. Throughout our history, we have fought wars over the desire to force other people to agree with us. It's an incredibly stupid trait, but we have it in abundance. I have it too.
There is no true definition for "amazing film"....but your mind is telling you there is and that your definition should apply to everyone else.
@SpinCycleSubmission I disagree. There are deeper themes in LMI to me. I find it much more interesting when I am put into a position to root against the Cop when Abby kills him. In LTROI, Lacke is a drunk who actually is there to kill Eli and he easily fits into the role of "must die". Others find things in LTROI they like....but there is certainly plenty of depth in LMI. Your inability to see it doesn't mean everyone else is shallow. It simply means YOU can't see it.
@HarpoSpoke She IS a very old woman in a 12 year old's body. You're agreeing with what I said. Her brain is part of her body and yes, that is also stuck at what a 12 year old's brain would be. I don't really know what you are disagreeing with at this point.
@SpinCycleSubmission You aren't listening to what Alfredson said. He wanted Lina to be able to convey the idea that Eli is a very old woman in a 12 year old body. So he wanted Eli to be mentally 200 years old....like Claudia in Interview with a Vampire.
@HarpoSpoke Well, of course she's an 'old' woman. She's been alive for 200 years. He also says they are children earlier on in the video. She's very old but hasn't aged physically or mentally (however she has lots of experience) because of being a vampire. I mean, I guess objectively the opposite could have been his intention but given they have distinct scenes meant to convey she is in fact acting like a child. Last time I look adults generally don't play with toys while playfully humming.
@SpinCycleSubmission I do agree Alfredson does not do a great job of making Eli a consistent character. But JAL wrote the screenplay and the same thing occurs in the book. At times Eli acts very old and at times Eli acts very young.
@SpinCycleSubmission He describes the actors as children....but he sees the character as "I wanted the vampire to be a very old woman in a 12 year old body". (direct quote) That's a pretty explicit description.
Very different than the way Reeves describes Abby. "She's stuck at 12 years old".
Movie aside, society does not approve of pedophilia b/c it involves the victimization & sexual exploitation of a child by an older more experienced/powerful adult. The victim/child is almost always not physically or emotionally ready for sex and b/c of this physical and psychological harm (often irreparable) is caused to the victim. Being disgusted by pedophilia does not make one closed minded or ignorant, it simply makes one sensitive to the harm/pain the crime causes to so many.
I like alot of you'r point's especially the age debate, there's no way it could've been a full grown man, because vampires age waaay slower! And even if a little kid is 200 year's old, still doesn't mean it's an adult because the brain is not fully developed at all.And I agree that the showing him as a adult was metophorical not litteral.
@cloudvol7 You got half of my point right. Mostly that, when Eli is playing with toys and acting like a 12 year old it's kind of hard to make the pedophile. While she has 200 years of experience her mind is still twelve. I think having vampire mythology where you only stay the same age physically kind of takes away a lot of the vampire mystique and kind of dumb. I don't know anything about vampire's aging slower? They aren't supposed to get older at all I believe. Could you clarify?
@SpinCycleSubmission No you're right, when they get bit at a young age they stay young.I don't know what I was thinking.Anyway's you made some great point's on this.Especially on the metophore thing.xD
He's actually a pedophile who met Eli when he was an adult already. But as someone else said, you couldn't know that if you haven't read the book. Personally I don't think Eli just befriends Oskar to make him her next 'keeper'. They make it seem that way in the remake. I think she (he) is really just very lonely and wants to stay with Oskar because she is happy to finally have found a friend. Oskar is willing to help her to survive because of loyalty and friendship.
@Daphuhnuh I saw it in theaters, and I pretty much hated it. They stripped away all the subtlety and emotion of the best parts which even more apparent if you watch the original in English (I really like the dubs for Oscar and Eli). If you compare English vs English some of the lines were not only taken but delivered EXACTLY the same. It makes it hard to believe the actors didn't watch the original as Reeves said.
I've been planning to make a video comparing the two in the future.
@SpinCycleSubmission Exactly my thoughts. It's basically an exact copy of LTROI, just made more commercial and mainstream. And it's not a re-adaption of the book, as they say, because everything is taken literally from the film, when the book doesn't describe those things literally. They left out half of the book. It fails to reproduce the same emotion and atmosphere of LTROI. It's useless it's even made in the first place. It's just made to make money out of someone elses ideas and succes.
@Daphuhnuh Not really true if you do some research on what was going on when the Swedish producers of LTROI sold the rights to Hammer. At the time, no one thought LTROI would be seen by anyone. The Swedes sold the rights BEFORE LTROI WAS EVEN RELEASED. LMI was supposed to bring the story to the masses. There was no "success" when Hammer bought the rights. You are twisting truth. And the "success" LTROI had ($11 million ) was relative to the assumption that no one would see LTROI.
@HarpoSpoke I'm a little confused at what you're trying to say here. LMI seemed like a poor attempt to bring "LTROI" to the masses considering it had a really poor box office. It more seemed like a way for Matt Reeves to take creative credit for another's story since few saw the far superior original. The new one was terrible in nearly every way with a couple exceptions and I plan to show this in a future video.
@SpinCycleSubmission The poor box office was due to many factors....first being that the story is not a mainstream story. LMI made twice what LTROI made....so two versions and the public yawned. Add in that the US distributor went bankrupt right before LMI was released, bad weekend slot, and down box office economy in 2010 and it all makes sense.
LMI was also the 8th best reviewed movie of 2010....so it was hardly terrible.
@SpinCycleSubmission On Reeves, he was more moved by the novel, but Hammer made it clear they wanted him to use the screenplay as his guide. Their words were "to pay homage". As mentioned, the first movie was not expected to be seen by anyone. It actually WASN'T seen by anyone....$11 million worldwide gross is nothing. But that paltry amount still "exceeded all expectations"....so that tells you what everyone thought when the rights were sold to Hammer.
@HarpoSpoke I call bs on that considering the movie had barely any extra elements from the novel if that. I don't remember seeing anything that was more akin to the novel. They focused on the side characters a little more I guess, but they had the story arcs weren't anymore similar.
Well, what Matt Reeves says were his intentions means little as the dialogue was read very closely to the original and the movie was basically the original with every ounce of soul butchered out. Meh.
@SpinCycleSubmission The novel is what got Reeves excited about the project. But Simon Oakes (CEO of Hammer studios) wanted to use JAL's screenplay...and in fact JAL did write a great adaptation of his book. Either way it's JAL's work.
What Reeves did was remove the side characters (town drunks) and focus more on the kids. They get a much larger share of screentime in LMI. He also made Owen a lonely boy instead of a loner, Abby a girl, Thomas a lifelong companion, and the Cop an innocent.
@SpinCycleSubmission You didn't read what I said. Reeves was moved to do the project by reading the novel....but Hammer wanted him to use the screenplay as his guide and he mentioned that in every interview.
There are actually a few things from the novel. Owen's candy addiction, harsher bullies, more sympathetic Caretaker, motivation for the bully, Owen's theft, Abby's monstrous transformation, Cop interrogating Thomas, Owen pisses himself, Virgina drinks her blood
@HarpoSpoke That seems like a rather general and loose list. If he was going to pay more homage to the book, he would at least kept the gender plot line and added some of the major plot points as opposed to some superficial nonsense as you listed. What we get instead is a huge focus on a bunch of unlikeable characters (not that the leads were much more likeable) so that Reeves can convince himself that this isn't just a crash copy of the original.
@HarpoSpoke The zest at which he flies past the memorable scenes (in the original not here, just the cheap replication) makes it seem as if he's trying to get by them as quickly as possible so fans of the original don't let out a prolonged groan at how blatantly ripped off this movie was.
@HarpoSpoke The problems with the movie were that it copied the original and did so poorly, it replaced subtlety with needless and cringe-worthy exposition and the audience was give hardly anytime to savor the relationship between the main characters. If this is what an Americanized remake is count me out please. If people want to see American Let the Right One In they should watch the dubs as they are amazing.
@HarpoSpoke People's liking of this movie over the original is only a demonstration of their own emotional shallowness as everything worthwhile and incredible has been stripped bare.
It couldn't just be...that a person could like the way LMI does it? I understand you believe it is "stripped bare"....but I certainly don't believe that. I prefer the acting, direction, cinematography, and story elements more in LMI. Why does that have to be "I'm shallow"?
@HarpoSpoke I accept your differing opinion. I think by analyzing the two side by side which I plan to do in another video which I will be sure to show you Let the Right One In is simply better. Not all opinions are equal and I think the vast majority of people capable of experiencing a complex and wide range of emotions will find the Swedish version superior. The US version was so inferior I can't really see otherwise and I really wanted to like it.
@SpinCycleSubmission I've yet to see any proof that one person's opinion of art is any better than anyone else's. Either you like it or you don't. There is no "right" and "wrong" in art. That's why art is different from everything else humans do. We make the mistake of thinking we can "rank" art....that's not possible.
I've actually done some scene by scene analysis of the two movies myself and explained why I think LMI is better in just about every way. I can direct you to it. ;)
@SpinCycleSubmission I did the same thing except mine "proves" why I like LMI more. Because my love of the cinematography or acting is not "proof" of anything....it merely shows my personal preference. Seeing the two side-by-side just reenforces why I like LMI more. But it of course would not "prove" one movie was better than the other.
@HarpoSpoke That wasn't really my intention. I do think most anyone with any emotional depth in them will prefer Let the Right One In. If you can't see the blatant flaws in Let Me In there's not much I can say to help you.
@HarpoSpoke I'm fine that you prefer Let Me In. To me that film is easily demonstrated to be more shallow, less subtle and ruin the aspects that made Let the Right One In unique and amazing. It goes from being this wonderful film to something that has many of the worst aspects of American cinema.
1-LMI was made by a British studio and in no way resembles typical big budget Hollywood. It is far too slow-paced to appeal to the mainstream audience. In fact, measuring the two movies reveals that LMI actually moves at a slower pace than LTROI. (I've done it)
2-There is nothing inherently superior about "subtle".
3-There are several instances where LMI is more subtle than LTROI. (I can and will list them all if needed)
@SpinCycleSubmission Likewise I'm perfectly fine that you prefer what I consider to be the inferior version. We like what we like. Other people like what they like. There is no "right" and "wrong" in art.
@SpinCycleSubmission "Complex" is one of the reasons I prefer LMI actually. There are several substantial narrative themes added to LMI that interest me greatly. The moral ambiguity of "good" and "evil" for instance. The characters in LTROI are far more black and white. Lacke and Hakan are not designed to promote sympathy whereas the Cop and Thomas are. ...This allowed me to have conflicting feelings about them in key scenes that forced moral questions to be asked.
He's actually a pedophile who met Eli when he was an adult already. But as someone else said here, you couldn't know that when you haven't read the book. Personally I don't think Eli just befriends Oskar to make him her next 'keeper'. They make it seem that way in the remake. I think she (he) is very lonely and really just wanted to stay with Oskar because she was happy to finally have found a friend. Oskar is willing to help her to survive because of the same feelings.
How can anyone be so superficial, I can't believe it. How does the fact that Eli was born as a boy but was castrated, change the relationship between Oskar and Eli? It's obvious Eli still is twelve years old in her mind, you can see it from her behaviour. It makes no sense to compare it to Interview with the Vampire, because it's a different story that deals with vampires differently. I think it makes more sense to stay on the same mental level with your body, as the brain grows with the body.
But I did think you contradicted yourself somewhat when you said "it is open to interpretation" then claimed his interpretation is invalid. It must be one or the other.
Also, the BRITISH remake is a great movie too. (Hammer is a British studio)
@HarpoSpoke By open to interpretation I don't mean any interpretation is valid, I just mean there are lots of ways one can interpret it based on the events, and I try to base my views on the events of the movie. I'm saying given the events that occured Fury's interpretation didn't make any sense. Yeah, you CAN interpret Eli being as 200+ in her mind, but when she's playing with toys and acting like a 12 year old girl, that's rather contradictory.
@SpinCycleSubmission Totally agree with your interpretation. Eli is forever stuck as a 12 year old in my mind. And though there is a pedophilia element in LTROI...it's not conveyed as POSITIVE. He seems to be objecting to pedophilia even being acknowledged.
But in the end, this movie is pretty well known to be "open to interpretation"...accurate or not.
@RuuYaa96 Call it what you want. It's made by a British studio. Hammer has been a Brit studio since they were making vampire movies in the 50s with Christopher Lee.
Pretty suspicious to me when anyone tries so hard to pretend LMI was made by a US studio. That usually means there is a political agenda in there somewhere that won't work if the studio is British. Otherwise...why make such a big deal about which country made it?
@HarpoSpoke I found the Remake really bad. In fact my intention is to create a video comparing the two sometime this summer and why it butchered the original.
@SpinCycleSubmission That's a good project. I did a series of videos comparing various scenes and the way LMI improved them from the original. Usually the acting was far superior. It's a lot of work.
@HarpoSpoke Yeah, I expect it to be a lot of work. I'm actually doing the opposite basically, because I found the new movie to be extremely lacking comparing to the original. I really wanted to like it but it was overall a terrible experience and they copied way too much straight from Let the Right One In and butchered the context. Maybe I'll check out your video anyway to see what you think.
This was one of my top films ever. My take on the Older guy, caretaker relationship. May be he meet Eli when he was a little boy, like Oskar now.And Oskar is his replacment. Just a thought.
@stephendaly1 I disagree with this interpretation because Oscar was unable to kill for Eli when the time came, he hesitated and Eli had to attack instead. I think this was put into the movie to show that Oscar and Eli's love and companionship is genuine and that she's not using Oscar just to get a new caretaker because he couldn't be that for her anyway.
@SpinCycleSubmission Maybe that's because after the first stages of falling in love have faded out, the more realistic take on life begins, such as responsibility/getting blood for Eli, planning for the future and hiding from the society. Kind in a way that a real, old, dusty relationship would work. There's where Håkan and Eli stands as the story starts out and that is also where Oskar and Eli eventually would end up.
@SpinCycleSubmission i think Oskar may well become that guardian figure one day, later on. Don't forget Oskar is a young boy of only 12 years old, as he matures, he may well become someone who will kill for Eli. If we only really love those that allow us to, Eli lets Oskar love her. Eli is not a boy, girl, man or woman, Eli is a vampire. Does our society approve of vampires ? Supernatural creatures that have no needf or reproduction, they're immortal. As long as they have blood & daylight guard
@droog1967 While the movie is left open for interpretation in many areas including the ending, I disagree with the cynical view that Oscar will become Eli's caretaker like Hakan. Hakan mostly seemed like a weak insecure man that Eli was preying on in a sense for survival.
Who's to say Eli doesn't bite Oscar and they live together as vampires. The director says he considers the ending a happy one, but it's up to everyone to interpret for themselves and that's a beautiful thing about LTROI.
@SpinCycleSubmission i agree with your view of Elis' relationship with Hakan. In the book, Hakan is eluded to as a paedophile, but as Eli is really 200 years old then he wouldn't really be, in the sense of legal age of consent limit, but as Eli says i've been 12 a long time is Eli more 12? i agree that interprutations are upto and wholely with the viewer, that's one definition of Art. The ending, is obviously not the end of Eli and Oskars story, the film is the beginning of that story.
@stephendaly1 And alos, Eli met "Her father/Håkan" when he was grown up. But though, if you haven't read the book. You couldn't have know that. And many other people have thought the same thing. I agree with stephedaly1 on this one XD
@stephendaly1 I agree with your interpretation and have always thought this was the case, it's the reason I think that complaints of paedophilia are ridiculous since it's all about Eli manipulating people. Though I understand why it's open to interpretation as to whether Eli has feelings for those she 'manipulates'.
LMAO I fucking love you. Literally, fucking love you. HAH!
"I haven't seen anyone but you come to this conclusion."
LMFAO!!! The crotch shot.
Transgendered female? Maybe. That's probably why Eli was castrated. Eli's gender is definitely female. Sex? We don't really know. She could have physically been a boy or transgendered. Doesn't really matter tho.
LOL! You're so right. His only objection was to a 200 yr old man with a 12 yr old boy. But a 200 yr old woman with a 12 yr old boy is fine.
Yes Eli does. At least in the remake she does. I was merely pointing out that she identifies with the gender of a female. Evidence?? She plays with toy rabbits and dolls. I'm not saying that she is a female (physically). But yeah. Gender is tricky, I don't blame you for getting confused. Homosexual men or woman can identify with genders opposite of their physical sex.
@alexmassey19 By the way, there are multiple determinants of sex. Gonadal expression, chromosomal expression, and outward attributes (physical expression). I'm sure you are aware that a human may have XY chromosomes but physically and gonadally be identified as females. Personally, I think that all of these ways of determining sex are old hat. I think a person's mentality (or the gender that they identify with) is the most important. Be what you want to be, or the like.

"...I haven't seen anyone beside you come to this conclusion yet."
Oh yeah. Great argument. Stopped caring about what you had to say right then and there :) I loved 'Let the Right One in' and these kinds of arguments make me stupid just by listening to them. I'm gonna go play outside.
Dude, you can state your opinion but do you have to do it in such a harsh way? Instead of stating your opinion and respecting someone else's, you criticize them and act like you hate everyone that doesn't think this movie is an amazing masterpiece.
Agree with you! Hollywood made also a copy of the Swedish film "Den Osynlige" (The Invisible) and they also do a remake of “Män som hatar kvinnor” (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) From The Millennium Trilogy written by Stieg Larsson, a Swedish Novelist
u..u what the fuck... That guy is an idiot, thank you for making this video xD
How uncomfortable does someone have to be with their own sexuality? Seriously, people need to stop being such bigoted prats. They take way to many things from a certain movie, then thrash it for not being up to their moral standard. Not to mention these details being incorrect. Sure everyones entitled to their own opinion. This is just mine. roflcopter
@Han414 Because SpinCycle's idea is worth almost nothing. He knows next to nothing about films, and certainly nothing about literature. Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one. But I suggest that he keep this one to himself. Also, Spin's idea that pedophilia and homosexuality are somehow related is pretty disgusting. Acting on an attraction to a kid under the age of consent is not something any good adult person will ever even think about doing. That includes gay people.
@lollipopfop This coming from someone named lollipopfop? Are you fucking kidding me? Spin didn't compare pedophilia to homosexuality. That other guy did. Spin pointed out that the other reviewer was hiding behind "pedophilia" as the reason why the movie was objectionable (when the guy was really uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality.) Fucking a. And you know what lollipop? Many pedophiles (in the Catholic church, at least) are involved in homosexual relationships of abuse. So stfu.
Your claim re the Catholic Church is ignorant. Yes there has been a media storm re abuses by a handful of priests and the Church's piss poor handling of the situation, however, these sick men represent a minority/mere fraction and are not a representation of all priests by a long shot. ANYONE can be a pedophile and there are far more non-priest pedophiles than priest pedophiles, just take a look at your neighborhood sexual predator registry!
You need to read this study by Diana Scully & Joseph Marolla, "Convicted Rapists' Vocabulary of Motive: Excuses & Justifications. That's got some pedophilia in it too.
You seem like you know next to nothing about the important shit. I am a nursing student & had a lot of psych & soc & deviant behavior classes. Film-knowledge be damned. Spin gets the human aspect. W/o that there is no film.
@lollipopfop Who wants to see a film that no one can understand unless they are a book/movie snob? People like you frustrate the shit out of me. Let the right one in is an excellent book. With the pedophilia. With the 200 yr old Eli who can't work her way up over herself, b/c she's really just a12 yr old expected to handle fked up adult problems.
I don't think the movie would make sense w/o all of it. And what about Oscar? What does he do when he's a few years older & still in love with her?
@AxelvrsRoxas you know what's funny, he says it's not a review at all, yet morons like you who can't fucking read will say he can't review movies, you ever see his reviews? nope, you just hung on a stupid vampire movie and him giving a little rant, why don't you emo fucks just blow each other while watching your faggy little movie. Spincycle looks like he's a pitcher.
@DotoftheDead I never said he reviewed it. He said for people to leave comments so I did. If you don't like my comment don't read it. It's not intended for you.
@FuryoftheFilmFan Really thats all you can say? Really why did you ask people to leave comments to the reason why they like this film or disagree with you, if you aren't going to be mature about it?
@FuryoftheFilmFan you are the one calling people pedos and yelling fuck you to everyone who disagrees with you. If that screams immaturity I don't know what else does.
@FuryoftheFilmFan Also it's really lame that you will look at the comments on another video that disagrees with you, looking for people who agrees with the person who disagrees with you.
@AxelvrsRoxas also let it be known that I am allowing my likeness to be rebroadcasted for the sake of this kids opinion to get across. so your comment about me not allowing people to say what they gotta say is bullshit. think before you comment eh?
The book doesn't leave anything open to interpretation. Eli/Elias was castrated 250 years earlier by the landlord of her village who was a vampire and who then drank the blood from the castration. The castration was part of the ritual to turn her into a vampire since vampires are androgynous; neither male nor female, because they can't mate. Elias changed his/her name to Eli and decided to live as a female; it's as simple as that.
little note for you, please, either talk louder, or get rid of that machine noise, some of us have bad audio, and listening to these videos are almost physically painful
In the book the vampires have a parasite, wich creates a tiny brain just above the heart. It creates a secondary personality wich is only about survival. The vampires doesn't care about sex at all. The book doesn't have the more religious type of vampires, whos afraid of crosses and so on. It's a parasite. And porn is pictures etc wich are meant to create sexual thought... I don't think anybody got turned on by that shot.
The problem is that most of the reviewers haven't read the book. They just notise all the things left out, wich the movie hints to. They blame it for celebrateing pedophilia, when it's actually just dealing with the issue, lonelyness, bullying, and how hard it is to grow up. And all the questions he's asking are raised in the book, and mostly answered. There are scenes where you see the story from Eli's side, and she believes the reason she carry on is that she feels to young to die.
FuryoftheFilmFan is a one dimensional, narrow-minded, unimaginative fool - literally choking on his own crudely naive principles and 'logic'. Such is his obsession with compartmentalising and stereotyping human character and subsequent behaviour, he has rendered himself incapable of being able to perceive the subtleties of the extraordinarily unique and complex relationships within this beautiful film.
@sleepypoodle You obviously haven't seen his other reviews, he does an amazing job breaking down the emotion that a film captures. Better than more critics. It's YOU who can't share an opinion, who can't allow yourself to maybe listen to what other people are saying. you know why? I can tell by the way you write that you're just this douchebag who thinks very highly of his (or her) own opinion.
He isn't a good reviewer at all actually. All of his opinions aside, he doesn't seem to understand anything about character development, story arc, or even staying consistent with his own retarded claims. There are tons of people on youtube who are better at reviewing films than that retard. Take Redlettermedia, or the Nostalgia Critic, for instance. You know, people who don't think Twilight was a solid love story (LOL).
@HardforJesus nostalgia critic?? HAHAHAHHA, the guy who just does a rundown of what you're just seeing on screen? that's not reviewing little man, that's mystery science theater shit. You talkin' out your ass son,
@FuryoftheFilmFan He's not amazing, nowhere near the greatness of Redlettermedia, but then again, he's ten times the reviewer you are. He doesn't just go "oh I have a moral issue with this film, therefore it must be garbage." Good reviewers judge film based on quality, not safety. Seriously your taste in films is the intellectual equivalent of a Nickelback fan.
Haken is not necessarily a paedophile, he may well have met Eli when he was Oskar's age and as he grew older his role had to evolve into that of a carer/protector. When Eli brushes his cheek it's a poignant reminder of the fondness she has for him and sadness that time has forced a change in the dynamic of their relationship. Eli was probably castrated as a punishment by some lynch mob many years back.
LOl I agree. I don't why that guy was so weirded it out by it. Theres a shit load of movies dealing with pedophilia (same sex/opposite/incest) and other taboo things cuz it happens way more times than not. But remember lots of people hate those subjects and they only came in to see the violent side (yet romantic for some) of it, like I did. But the movie blew my mind, so well acted, beautiful and hardcore at the same time.
hey..btw...Edward is a creepy Pedo too, hanging out in a high school picking up teenage girls...yup...Team Edward...it's the truth. Why you think Doctor Who never gets with his companions, cuz he keeps telling them he's over 900 years old and too old for them! annnd yes..I will go watch Iron Man 2 again I liked that movie, you stay hugging your little dvd there moaning about society. Just don't cut yourself to feel alive mmkay?
I still struggle with the fact that it TWO DAYS for the contents of the movie to sink in to the other reviewer. Your read is pretty much dead on with mine, and Eli is clearly still a kid who huddles with Oskar for warmth, and it's made clear that neither Oskar nor Eli have an adult's conception of sexuality (see: Oskar nor Eli knowing what "going steady" means, as Oskar says they just do what they're already doing...hanging out playing puzzles). Methinks the other reviewer protests too much.
I think, sadly, this is another case of someone injecting their own morality where it shouldn't be, and leaping to a conclusion that the movie rejects, the book rejects, and the author rejects. While it's a dark story and there is a paedo in it, we're clearly not meant to sexualize any child or view the relationship between Eli and Oskar in adult sexual terms.
One last thing: The question of gender doesn't make it paedophilia, the question of age would, and that the other reviewer was repulsed by the reveal of a possible question of gender says more about him than the movie. It does change the dynamic, but not the dynamic FanFilmFury indicates. A 200-yr old woman and a 12 year old boy is still paedophilia. Instead he just outs himself as being homophobic, in addition to needing google and wiki to spoon-feed the story.
@patchworkz7 Sorry but a teenager hooking up with an older woman while still pedophilia isn't as viewed down upon as a young girl hooking up with an old dude. Listen to any comics who joke about those kids getting to get with their teachers, so yeah, that's how that goes, paint me as a homophobe all you want but the truth of the matter is that's how its viewed and Eli is a castrated BOY. I don't care if hormones never develop if you born with a penis you is a boy 4 life even if its lost.
@FuryoftheFilmFan Well, setting aside the hormone thing, which might be in the book, but I agree with you that the movie seem to indicate Eli was a boy rather than anything more complicated, no matter what comics say you're right that it's paedophilia no matter what when it's a kid being sexualized. However, I still think you're reading sex into something that isn't there. Oskar doesn't even understand the ramifications of a kiss.
@FuryoftheFilmFan it's fine not to like a movie, but I think you took it further than your feelings on the movie and suggested that anyone who liked the movie was sick, but not everyone read the same things you did into the movie, obviously. I don't see any sexualization of the characters. Eli is still stuck at 12, Oskar doesn't understand what going steady means. There's no sexualization except from the guy who Eli strings along to get blood, and who is clearly shown as evil and pays for it.
Additionally, even where a child is "willing" or "compliant" to a pedophiles advances it does not make it okay or make it a victimless crime. The child is still harmed and it is still a terrible crime/victimization.
I would say that.....IF........Eli did indeed have the mind of a 200 year old man or woman it would make the relationship terribly perverse because the story would have instead revolved around the victimization of a child.
pookashell21 7 months ago
@pookashell21 Eli isn't. Your inability to understand such a simple plot point makes me skeptical of anything else you say. She's acting like a 12 year old the entire movie.
Please cite statistics for your facts below. Just because society condemns something doesn't make it right or wrong. Also, hardly any of the people you see on How To Catch a Predator or any of that are even pedophiles. Pedophiles are attracted to prepubescent children.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Actually....according the Tomas Alfredson, Eli is "a very old woman in a 12 year old body". Direct quote from this video: watch?v=pqNo5akbMjo&feature=related (go to 3:30) So one could make the case Eli is a "predator" in more ways than one. ;)
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke If opinions mean well, no one can actually be right and have a better opinion why even mention opinions at all if they are all equal. Some people are simply emotionally incapable of enjoying an amazing film and would prefer some crash, stale action movie. This doesn't make them 'wrong' in that they actually enjoy it more, but emotionally shallow.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Logically, we should NOT mention our opinions. But we are a flawed species. Throughout our history, we have fought wars over the desire to force other people to agree with us. It's an incredibly stupid trait, but we have it in abundance. I have it too.
There is no true definition for "amazing film"....but your mind is telling you there is and that your definition should apply to everyone else.
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission I disagree. There are deeper themes in LMI to me. I find it much more interesting when I am put into a position to root against the Cop when Abby kills him. In LTROI, Lacke is a drunk who actually is there to kill Eli and he easily fits into the role of "must die". Others find things in LTROI they like....but there is certainly plenty of depth in LMI. Your inability to see it doesn't mean everyone else is shallow. It simply means YOU can't see it.
HarpoSpoke 6 months ago
@HarpoSpoke She IS a very old woman in a 12 year old's body. You're agreeing with what I said. Her brain is part of her body and yes, that is also stuck at what a 12 year old's brain would be. I don't really know what you are disagreeing with at this point.
SpinCycleSubmission 6 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission You aren't listening to what Alfredson said. He wanted Lina to be able to convey the idea that Eli is a very old woman in a 12 year old body. So he wanted Eli to be mentally 200 years old....like Claudia in Interview with a Vampire.
HarpoSpoke 6 months ago
@HarpoSpoke Well, of course she's an 'old' woman. She's been alive for 200 years. He also says they are children earlier on in the video. She's very old but hasn't aged physically or mentally (however she has lots of experience) because of being a vampire. I mean, I guess objectively the opposite could have been his intention but given they have distinct scenes meant to convey she is in fact acting like a child. Last time I look adults generally don't play with toys while playfully humming.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission I do agree Alfredson does not do a great job of making Eli a consistent character. But JAL wrote the screenplay and the same thing occurs in the book. At times Eli acts very old and at times Eli acts very young.
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission He describes the actors as children....but he sees the character as "I wanted the vampire to be a very old woman in a 12 year old body". (direct quote) That's a pretty explicit description.
Very different than the way Reeves describes Abby. "She's stuck at 12 years old".
HarpoSpoke 6 months ago
Movie aside, society does not approve of pedophilia b/c it involves the victimization & sexual exploitation of a child by an older more experienced/powerful adult. The victim/child is almost always not physically or emotionally ready for sex and b/c of this physical and psychological harm (often irreparable) is caused to the victim. Being disgusted by pedophilia does not make one closed minded or ignorant, it simply makes one sensitive to the harm/pain the crime causes to so many.
pookashell21 7 months ago
I like alot of you'r point's especially the age debate, there's no way it could've been a full grown man, because vampires age waaay slower! And even if a little kid is 200 year's old, still doesn't mean it's an adult because the brain is not fully developed at all.And I agree that the showing him as a adult was metophorical not litteral.
cloudvol7 7 months ago
@cloudvol7 You got half of my point right. Mostly that, when Eli is playing with toys and acting like a 12 year old it's kind of hard to make the pedophile. While she has 200 years of experience her mind is still twelve. I think having vampire mythology where you only stay the same age physically kind of takes away a lot of the vampire mystique and kind of dumb. I don't know anything about vampire's aging slower? They aren't supposed to get older at all I believe. Could you clarify?
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago

Daphuhnuh 1 year ago
@Daphuhnuh I saw it in theaters, and I pretty much hated it. They stripped away all the subtlety and emotion of the best parts which even more apparent if you watch the original in English (I really like the dubs for Oscar and Eli). If you compare English vs English some of the lines were not only taken but delivered EXACTLY the same. It makes it hard to believe the actors didn't watch the original as Reeves said.
I've been planning to make a video comparing the two in the future.

Daphuhnuh 1 year ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Exactly my thoughts. It's basically an exact copy of LTROI, just made more commercial and mainstream. And it's not a re-adaption of the book, as they say, because everything is taken literally from the film, when the book doesn't describe those things literally. They left out half of the book. It fails to reproduce the same emotion and atmosphere of LTROI. It's useless it's even made in the first place. It's just made to make money out of someone elses ideas and succes.
Daphuhnuh 1 year ago
@Daphuhnuh Not really true if you do some research on what was going on when the Swedish producers of LTROI sold the rights to Hammer. At the time, no one thought LTROI would be seen by anyone. The Swedes sold the rights BEFORE LTROI WAS EVEN RELEASED. LMI was supposed to bring the story to the masses. There was no "success" when Hammer bought the rights. You are twisting truth. And the "success" LTROI had ($11 million ) was relative to the assumption that no one would see LTROI.
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@HarpoSpoke I'm a little confused at what you're trying to say here. LMI seemed like a poor attempt to bring "LTROI" to the masses considering it had a really poor box office. It more seemed like a way for Matt Reeves to take creative credit for another's story since few saw the far superior original. The new one was terrible in nearly every way with a couple exceptions and I plan to show this in a future video.
SpinCycleSubmission 9 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission The poor box office was due to many factors....first being that the story is not a mainstream story. LMI made twice what LTROI made....so two versions and the public yawned. Add in that the US distributor went bankrupt right before LMI was released, bad weekend slot, and down box office economy in 2010 and it all makes sense.
LMI was also the 8th best reviewed movie of 2010....so it was hardly terrible.
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission On Reeves, he was more moved by the novel, but Hammer made it clear they wanted him to use the screenplay as his guide. Their words were "to pay homage". As mentioned, the first movie was not expected to be seen by anyone. It actually WASN'T seen by anyone....$11 million worldwide gross is nothing. But that paltry amount still "exceeded all expectations"....so that tells you what everyone thought when the rights were sold to Hammer.
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@HarpoSpoke I call bs on that considering the movie had barely any extra elements from the novel if that. I don't remember seeing anything that was more akin to the novel. They focused on the side characters a little more I guess, but they had the story arcs weren't anymore similar.
Well, what Matt Reeves says were his intentions means little as the dialogue was read very closely to the original and the movie was basically the original with every ounce of soul butchered out. Meh.
SpinCycleSubmission 9 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission The novel is what got Reeves excited about the project. But Simon Oakes (CEO of Hammer studios) wanted to use JAL's screenplay...and in fact JAL did write a great adaptation of his book. Either way it's JAL's work.
What Reeves did was remove the side characters (town drunks) and focus more on the kids. They get a much larger share of screentime in LMI. He also made Owen a lonely boy instead of a loner, Abby a girl, Thomas a lifelong companion, and the Cop an innocent.
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission You didn't read what I said. Reeves was moved to do the project by reading the novel....but Hammer wanted him to use the screenplay as his guide and he mentioned that in every interview.
There are actually a few things from the novel. Owen's candy addiction, harsher bullies, more sympathetic Caretaker, motivation for the bully, Owen's theft, Abby's monstrous transformation, Cop interrogating Thomas, Owen pisses himself, Virgina drinks her blood
HarpoSpoke 8 months ago
@HarpoSpoke That seems like a rather general and loose list. If he was going to pay more homage to the book, he would at least kept the gender plot line and added some of the major plot points as opposed to some superficial nonsense as you listed. What we get instead is a huge focus on a bunch of unlikeable characters (not that the leads were much more likeable) so that Reeves can convince himself that this isn't just a crash copy of the original.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke The zest at which he flies past the memorable scenes (in the original not here, just the cheap replication) makes it seem as if he's trying to get by them as quickly as possible so fans of the original don't let out a prolonged groan at how blatantly ripped off this movie was.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke The problems with the movie were that it copied the original and did so poorly, it replaced subtlety with needless and cringe-worthy exposition and the audience was give hardly anytime to savor the relationship between the main characters. If this is what an Americanized remake is count me out please. If people want to see American Let the Right One In they should watch the dubs as they are amazing.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke People's liking of this movie over the original is only a demonstration of their own emotional shallowness as everything worthwhile and incredible has been stripped bare.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Is that what it is?
It couldn't just be...that a person could like the way LMI does it? I understand you believe it is "stripped bare"....but I certainly don't believe that. I prefer the acting, direction, cinematography, and story elements more in LMI. Why does that have to be "I'm shallow"?
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke I accept your differing opinion. I think by analyzing the two side by side which I plan to do in another video which I will be sure to show you Let the Right One In is simply better. Not all opinions are equal and I think the vast majority of people capable of experiencing a complex and wide range of emotions will find the Swedish version superior. The US version was so inferior I can't really see otherwise and I really wanted to like it.
SpinCycleSubmission 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission I've yet to see any proof that one person's opinion of art is any better than anyone else's. Either you like it or you don't. There is no "right" and "wrong" in art. That's why art is different from everything else humans do. We make the mistake of thinking we can "rank" art....that's not possible.
I've actually done some scene by scene analysis of the two movies myself and explained why I think LMI is better in just about every way. I can direct you to it. ;)
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission I did the same thing except mine "proves" why I like LMI more. Because my love of the cinematography or acting is not "proof" of anything....it merely shows my personal preference. Seeing the two side-by-side just reenforces why I like LMI more. But it of course would not "prove" one movie was better than the other.
HarpoSpoke 7 months ago
@HarpoSpoke That wasn't really my intention. I do think most anyone with any emotional depth in them will prefer Let the Right One In. If you can't see the blatant flaws in Let Me In there's not much I can say to help you.
SpinCycleSubmission 6 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission What is your favorite flavor of ice cream? If I liked a different flavor would you say I'm wrong to like that flavor?
That's how this sounds to me. How can art possibly be "right" or "wrong"? You like what you like.
HarpoSpoke 6 months ago
@HarpoSpoke I'm fine that you prefer Let Me In. To me that film is easily demonstrated to be more shallow, less subtle and ruin the aspects that made Let the Right One In unique and amazing. It goes from being this wonderful film to something that has many of the worst aspects of American cinema.
You're entitled to think otherwise. Meh.
SpinCycleSubmission 6 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Several problems here:
HarpoSpoke 6 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Likewise I'm perfectly fine that you prefer what I consider to be the inferior version. We like what we like. Other people like what they like. There is no "right" and "wrong" in art.
HarpoSpoke 3 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission "Complex" is one of the reasons I prefer LMI actually. There are several substantial narrative themes added to LMI that interest me greatly. The moral ambiguity of "good" and "evil" for instance. The characters in LTROI are far more black and white. Lacke and Hakan are not designed to promote sympathy whereas the Cop and Thomas are. ...This allowed me to have conflicting feelings about them in key scenes that forced moral questions to be asked.

I actually agree with many of your points here.
But I did think you contradicted yourself somewhat when you said "it is open to interpretation" then claimed his interpretation is invalid. It must be one or the other.
Also, the BRITISH remake is a great movie too. (Hammer is a British studio)
HarpoSpoke 1 year ago
@HarpoSpoke By open to interpretation I don't mean any interpretation is valid, I just mean there are lots of ways one can interpret it based on the events, and I try to base my views on the events of the movie. I'm saying given the events that occured Fury's interpretation didn't make any sense. Yeah, you CAN interpret Eli being as 200+ in her mind, but when she's playing with toys and acting like a 12 year old girl, that's rather contradictory.
SpinCycleSubmission 1 year ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Totally agree with your interpretation. Eli is forever stuck as a 12 year old in my mind. And though there is a pedophilia element in LTROI...it's not conveyed as POSITIVE. He seems to be objecting to pedophilia even being acknowledged.
But in the end, this movie is pretty well known to be "open to interpretation"...accurate or not.

@HarpoSpoke it isnt a british remake its just made by a british company
RuuYaa96 9 months ago
@RuuYaa96 Call it what you want. It's made by a British studio. Hammer has been a Brit studio since they were making vampire movies in the 50s with Christopher Lee.
Pretty suspicious to me when anyone tries so hard to pretend LMI was made by a US studio. That usually means there is a political agenda in there somewhere that won't work if the studio is British. Otherwise...why make such a big deal about which country made it?
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@HarpoSpoke I found the Remake really bad. In fact my intention is to create a video comparing the two sometime this summer and why it butchered the original.
SpinCycleSubmission 9 months ago
@SpinCycleSubmission That's a good project. I did a series of videos comparing various scenes and the way LMI improved them from the original. Usually the acting was far superior. It's a lot of work.
HarpoSpoke 9 months ago
@HarpoSpoke Yeah, I expect it to be a lot of work. I'm actually doing the opposite basically, because I found the new movie to be extremely lacking comparing to the original. I really wanted to like it but it was overall a terrible experience and they copied way too much straight from Let the Right One In and butchered the context. Maybe I'll check out your video anyway to see what you think.

This was one of my top films ever. My take on the Older guy, caretaker relationship. May be he meet Eli when he was a little boy, like Oskar now.And Oskar is his replacment. Just a thought.
stephendaly1 1 year ago
@stephendaly1 I disagree with this interpretation because Oscar was unable to kill for Eli when the time came, he hesitated and Eli had to attack instead. I think this was put into the movie to show that Oscar and Eli's love and companionship is genuine and that she's not using Oscar just to get a new caretaker because he couldn't be that for her anyway.
SpinCycleSubmission 1 year ago
@SpinCycleSubmission Maybe that's because after the first stages of falling in love have faded out, the more realistic take on life begins, such as responsibility/getting blood for Eli, planning for the future and hiding from the society. Kind in a way that a real, old, dusty relationship would work. There's where Håkan and Eli stands as the story starts out and that is also where Oskar and Eli eventually would end up.
melanchlorin 1 year ago
@SpinCycleSubmission i think Oskar may well become that guardian figure one day, later on. Don't forget Oskar is a young boy of only 12 years old, as he matures, he may well become someone who will kill for Eli. If we only really love those that allow us to, Eli lets Oskar love her. Eli is not a boy, girl, man or woman, Eli is a vampire. Does our society approve of vampires ? Supernatural creatures that have no needf or reproduction, they're immortal. As long as they have blood & daylight guard
droog1967 1 year ago
@droog1967 While the movie is left open for interpretation in many areas including the ending, I disagree with the cynical view that Oscar will become Eli's caretaker like Hakan. Hakan mostly seemed like a weak insecure man that Eli was preying on in a sense for survival.
Who's to say Eli doesn't bite Oscar and they live together as vampires. The director says he considers the ending a happy one, but it's up to everyone to interpret for themselves and that's a beautiful thing about LTROI.
SpinCycleSubmission 1 year ago
@SpinCycleSubmission i agree with your view of Elis' relationship with Hakan. In the book, Hakan is eluded to as a paedophile, but as Eli is really 200 years old then he wouldn't really be, in the sense of legal age of consent limit, but as Eli says i've been 12 a long time is Eli more 12? i agree that interprutations are upto and wholely with the viewer, that's one definition of Art. The ending, is obviously not the end of Eli and Oskars story, the film is the beginning of that story.
droog1967 1 year ago
@stephendaly1 And alos, Eli met "Her father/Håkan" when he was grown up. But though, if you haven't read the book. You couldn't have know that. And many other people have thought the same thing. I agree with stephedaly1 on this one XD
reedcostume 1 year ago
@stephendaly1 I agree with your interpretation and have always thought this was the case, it's the reason I think that complaints of paedophilia are ridiculous since it's all about Eli manipulating people. Though I understand why it's open to interpretation as to whether Eli has feelings for those she 'manipulates'.

@ModestTruth Eli doesn't identify as female in the book or movie. He tells Oskar that he's not a girl.

ModestTruth 1 year ago
@alexmassey19 By the way, there are multiple determinants of sex. Gonadal expression, chromosomal expression, and outward attributes (physical expression). I'm sure you are aware that a human may have XY chromosomes but physically and gonadally be identified as females. Personally, I think that all of these ways of determining sex are old hat. I think a person's mentality (or the gender that they identify with) is the most important. Be what you want to be, or the like.

That includes gay people.
lollipopfop 1 year ago
@lollipopfop I never compared pedophilia to homosexuality. I was calling out Fury for sounding homophobic. Where did you even get this from?
SpinCycleSubmission 1 year ago
@lollipopfop This coming from someone named lollipopfop? Are you fucking kidding me? Spin didn't compare pedophilia to homosexuality. That other guy did. Spin pointed out that the other reviewer was hiding behind "pedophilia" as the reason why the movie was objectionable (when the guy was really uncomfortable with the idea of homosexuality.) Fucking a. And you know what lollipop? Many pedophiles (in the Catholic church, at least) are involved in homosexual relationships of abuse. So stfu.
ModestTruth 1 year ago
@ModestTruth

ModestTruth 1 year ago
@lollipopfop Who wants to see a film that no one can understand unless they are a book/movie snob? People like you frustrate the shit out of me. Let the right one in is an excellent book. With the pedophilia. With the 200 yr old Eli who can't work her way up over herself, b/c she's really just a12 yr old expected to handle fked up adult problems.
I don't think the movie would make sense w/o all of it. And what about Oscar? What does he do when he's a few years older & still in love with her?

Saw the fury guy's review. Yeah he's a total idiot.
AxelvrsRoxas 1 year ago
@AxelvrsRoxas you know what's funny, he says it's not a review at all, yet morons like you who can't fucking read will say he can't review movies, you ever see his reviews? nope, you just hung on a stupid vampire movie and him giving a little rant, why don't you emo fucks just blow each other while watching your faggy little movie. Spincycle looks like he's a pitcher.
DotoftheDead 1 year ago
@DotoftheDead I never said he reviewed it. He said for people to leave comments so I did. If you don't like my comment don't read it. It's not intended for you.

@HardforJesus I see you're reaching for insults, keep trying
FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan Really thats all you can say? Really why did you ask people to leave comments to the reason why they like this film or disagree with you, if you aren't going to be mature about it?
AxelvrsRoxas 1 year ago
@AxelvrsRoxas leave comments about the movie not to insult and be assholes, learn to share an opinion and join in on a mature conversation.
FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan you are the one calling people pedos and yelling fuck you to everyone who disagrees with you. If that screams immaturity I don't know what else does.
AxelvrsRoxas 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan Also it's really lame that you will look at the comments on another video that disagrees with you, looking for people who agrees with the person who disagrees with you.
AxelvrsRoxas 1 year ago
@AxelvrsRoxas also let it be known that I am allowing my likeness to be rebroadcasted for the sake of this kids opinion to get across. so your comment about me not allowing people to say what they gotta say is bullshit. think before you comment eh?
FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan Are you not merciful. And thats not what I said. Then to read and think before you type eh?

@AxelvrsRoxas oops I meant learn to read and think before you type eh?

I love how he only mention it's was "vampire pedophilia" when he realizes that Eli was a boy.
mybunnysuit 1 year ago
The book doesn't leave anything open to interpretation. Eli/Elias was castrated 250 years earlier by the landlord of her village who was a vampire and who then drank the blood from the castration. The castration was part of the ritual to turn her into a vampire since vampires are androgynous; neither male nor female, because they can't mate. Elias changed his/her name to Eli and decided to live as a female; it's as simple as that.

little note for you, please, either talk louder, or get rid of that machine noise, some of us have bad audio, and listening to these videos are almost physically painful
lich109 1 year ago
I agree with your opinion.
Wowbagger86 1 year ago
In the book the vampires have a parasite, wich creates a tiny brain just above the heart. It creates a secondary personality wich is only about survival. The vampires doesn't care about sex at all. The book doesn't have the more religious type of vampires, whos afraid of crosses and so on. It's a parasite. And porn is pictures etc wich are meant to create sexual thought... I don't think anybody got turned on by that shot.
Wowbagger86 1 year ago

Such is his obsession with compartmentalising and stereotyping human character and subsequent behaviour, he has rendered himself incapable of being able to perceive the subtleties of the extraordinarily unique and complex relationships within this beautiful film.
sleepypoodle 1 year ago
@sleepypoodle You obviously haven't seen his other reviews, he does an amazing job breaking down the emotion that a film captures. Better than more critics. It's YOU who can't share an opinion, who can't allow yourself to maybe listen to what other people are saying. you know why? I can tell by the way you write that you're just this douchebag who thinks very highly of his (or her) own opinion.
DotoftheDead 1 year ago
He isn't a good reviewer at all actually. All of his opinions aside, he doesn't seem to understand anything about character development, story arc, or even staying consistent with his own retarded claims. There are tons of people on youtube who are better at reviewing films than that retard. Take Redlettermedia, or the Nostalgia Critic, for instance. You know, people who don't think Twilight was a solid love story (LOL).
HardforJesus 1 year ago
@HardforJesus nostalgia critic?? HAHAHAHHA, the guy who just does a rundown of what you're just seeing on screen? that's not reviewing little man, that's mystery science theater shit. You talkin' out your ass son,
FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan He's not amazing, nowhere near the greatness of Redlettermedia, but then again, he's ten times the reviewer you are. He doesn't just go "oh I have a moral issue with this film, therefore it must be garbage." Good reviewers judge film based on quality, not safety. Seriously your taste in films is the intellectual equivalent of a Nickelback fan.
HardforJesus 1 year ago
Haken is not necessarily a paedophile, he may well have met Eli when he was Oskar's age and as he grew older his role had to evolve into that of a carer/protector. When Eli brushes his cheek it's a poignant reminder of the fondness she has for him and sadness that time has forced a change in the dynamic of their relationship. Eli was probably castrated as a punishment by some lynch mob many years back.
sleepypoodle 1 year ago

FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
I still struggle with the fact that it TWO DAYS for the contents of the movie to sink in to the other reviewer. Your read is pretty much dead on with mine, and Eli is clearly still a kid who huddles with Oskar for warmth, and it's made clear that neither Oskar nor Eli have an adult's conception of sexuality (see: Oskar nor Eli knowing what "going steady" means, as Oskar says they just do what they're already doing...hanging out playing puzzles). Methinks the other reviewer protests too much.
patchworkz7 1 year ago
I think, sadly, this is another case of someone injecting their own morality where it shouldn't be, and leaping to a conclusion that the movie rejects, the book rejects, and the author rejects. While it's a dark story and there is a paedo in it, we're clearly not meant to sexualize any child or view the relationship between Eli and Oskar in adult sexual terms.
patchworkz7 1 year ago
One last thing: The question of gender doesn't make it paedophilia, the question of age would, and that the other reviewer was repulsed by the reveal of a possible question of gender says more about him than the movie. It does change the dynamic, but not the dynamic FanFilmFury indicates. A 200-yr old woman and a 12 year old boy is still paedophilia. Instead he just outs himself as being homophobic, in addition to needing google and wiki to spoon-feed the story.
patchworkz7 1 year ago
@patchworkz7 Sorry but a teenager hooking up with an older woman while still pedophilia isn't as viewed down upon as a young girl hooking up with an old dude. Listen to any comics who joke about those kids getting to get with their teachers, so yeah, that's how that goes, paint me as a homophobe all you want but the truth of the matter is that's how its viewed and Eli is a castrated BOY. I don't care if hormones never develop if you born with a penis you is a boy 4 life even if its lost.
FuryoftheFilmFan 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan Well, setting aside the hormone thing, which might be in the book, but I agree with you that the movie seem to indicate Eli was a boy rather than anything more complicated, no matter what comics say you're right that it's paedophilia no matter what when it's a kid being sexualized. However, I still think you're reading sex into something that isn't there. Oskar doesn't even understand the ramifications of a kiss.
patchworkz7 1 year ago
@FuryoftheFilmFan it's fine not to like a movie, but I think you took it further than your feelings on the movie and suggested that anyone who liked the movie was sick, but not everyone read the same things you did into the movie, obviously. I don't see any sexualization of the characters. Eli is still stuck at 12, Oskar doesn't understand what going steady means. There's no sexualization except from the guy who Eli strings along to get blood, and who is clearly shown as evil and pays for it.
