ELE É UM TENOR???SERIA CLASSIFICADO COMO QUAL TIMBRE DE TENOR, PORQUE ACHO A VOZ DELE BEM PEZADA(FILME DE TERROR) CHEGA A DAR UNS ARREPIOS NO AGUDO.....
hm, i am not his biggest fan, but why not? he is not a tenor.... I understand that people like it. If SImon Keenlyside sang this aria, I would most certainly like it more, but this (Hvorostovsky´s) versison is not to be condemned:-))
Dmitri Hvorostovsky has the most divine voice,.In Verdi etc he cannot beaten, but this is so wrong.I thought Pavarptti was wrong singing it,but at least that was a Tenor, this version for Baritone is even worse (not the singing just setting it so low).
When will singers and conductors leave well enough alone, and realise that this piece belongs to the Mezzo's and Counter Tenors?
I have to speak up for the mezzos here. Mezzos have been singing this part for a long time & doing a terrific job with it including the Berlioz rewriting. But I love the countertenors (Andreas Scholl) & I admire this rendition by Dmitri.
You are right operagirl that it sounds better on a countertenor but this is a male part not a little boy part. So I think it's better to be sung by a Tenor or Baritone better than a countertenor. But I would go more for the Tenor than the Baritone that's my opinion.
I don't know...I just don't get the same feeling when a baritone sings it. One of the wonderful things about this being originally written and sung by a castrato is that Orfeo could sing and play his lyre so beautifully that even the God's of the Underworld would weep, and there is nothing more pure or magical sounding than the voice of a castrato (or as close to what we have, a countertenor.) It suits the aria and role much better than a baritone.
I agree with you. However, Hvorostovsky's version is pleasant to listen to. Much of what we like about 'Che faro', is the orchestration and how the countertenor fits so lightly with the music. Hvorostovsky is a little too 'big' for the tune, but hey - it's still a great operatic singer singing a great tune.
I had no idea Mr.Hvorostovsky could execute so fluently in classical baroque! This is one of my favorite arias from one of my favorite operas.I think Orfeo should sung by a baritone, and Mr. H is simply fantastic at this!
No, I fear I do not. Can you get at Amazon? Is it a recital disc of classical baroque opera arias? If it is,it would surely be a marvelous delight! Do you know if Mr.H will be considering Gluck's Orfeo as an up-and-coming role?It has been done with baritones before.
Gracias frufruj, por subir este video es una interpretacion hermosa. Dmitri completamente entregado a su canto,al igual que en ombra mai fu, se ve que fue un extraordianrio concierto de Hvoro tendras algo mas de este concierto?
Beautiful! Never heard this sung by a baritone... sounds great!! :)

Interesting to hear sung by a bass baritone. A beautiful aria in any voice.

to say more, this hardly conveys the whole image of Orpheus and his feelings.
Orpheus should be more subtle. Would such Orpheus make stones refuse to hit him? By scaring them maybe..
but this is business: they all have their audience and need to surprise it

Do you know of his CD Arie Antiche? Excellent - in the beginning, I would listen to it daily. Now "only" about weekly :-)

Amazon seems to be out of stock (you can listen to free samples, though). I found it on allmusicimport[dot]com/692941[dot]html
I've uploaded Amarilli from this CD, and you can also find O del mio dolce ardor on YouTube. Several have also been included on his CD "Portrait".
