He is the reigning champion because he won the 2007 Iditarod. This is the 2008 banquet. Jeff King won in 2006.

a cancer survivor, besides winning iditrod's 2007 & 2008, lance also won the yukon quest in 2007 & 2008 - something thought near impossible as the quest and iditarod are just a few weeks apart. reigning champ? hell yes!!
plus, lance is a wonderful man.
