It isn't specifically from either, most people will say "It is from HL2" simply because hl2 is the better game (as much as I love HL (and I do)), but on the whole, it is just a lambda symbol, it is associated with both.

Really however it is only from hl1 for him because hl1 is what he associates the lambda with more. If you are going purely by its first appearance then the greek alphabet is where it would come from (possibly it would come from earlier, the greek alphabet is the earliest I am aware of it however)

Yeah, it was. Valve confirmed it themselves. Plus, I believe in the demo or the beta it was a Boomer instead of a Charger, but they changed it because a Charger could make the symbol better. Plus Valve has been known to put the Lambda symbol in their games.
