After living close to where this happened for 17 years I'm not supprised that this happened. When it comes the closings in Colorado Springs the roads will be like this and most schools and buisness will be open and road closing isn't as common as you'd think it be in Colorado Springs do to snow, road closing does happen but durning almost every snow storm their are a couple of accidents do to icy conditions on busy roads

Well...see, here;'s the thing. Once traction is "broken", things get dicey. People have come to rely on AWD/4WD and anit-lock breaks without understanding what they are intended for and how they work. If there isn't enough friction between traveled surface and tires for the ABS to sense, it's gonna think that the vehicle has come to a stop, which is the locking the brakes part.

Either that, or they're pumping the brakes in a vehicle with anti-lock brakes, which is just stupid.

And just about every one of these drivers have their brakes locked up. If they did what they were taught to do in driver's ed (even on dry pavement, they teach this) pump your brakes, don't stand on them. You you break from the surface of the road, you automatically accelerate.

@CaroleinOr You aren't supposed to pump the brakes of a vehicle that has anti-lock brakes. Doing so eliminates the functionality and purpose of ABS. Once a vehicle breaks traction, it breaks traction. Translation: there ain't a whole heck of a lot that can be done about it.

People need to learn to drive in ice/snow. Every single vehicle locked their brakes as you could tell by the wheels not turning as they slid, one of the worst thing to do. Let off your brakes and shift to neutral instead.
