Buying cans of compressed air is a stupid way of wasting $. I live on the 3rd floor in an apt. I dusted my PC on a windy day: brought it by the window with the curtain drawn behind me to prevent dust blowing back in. The wind took care of most of it, and the remainder I dislodged with a soft-bristled brush and watched it being blown away.
Now my PC is quiet, what peace! Before dusting I was almost ready to buy a new PC just b/c of the loud noise it made.
Yes it is a good idea, it's the only way to do it, while i was working at computer shop (maintenence, builds, virus checks etc), we used spray duster to clean them, and we sold them too
spray dusters/compressed air are the only way to go, go ahead and try clean it with a dry, staticy cloth, or a moist short-circuity cloth
next time you want to clean your computer, don't put it on the ground.. even if you're blowing inside, the dust/dirt on the ground is coming inside. You're killing your hardware.
My videos and games have been running really choppy and slow as well as some other featers on my pc, even though everthing ran just fine two weeks ago. Do you think doing this may help? I dont think I have cleaned the inside of my pc at all since ive owned it.
@Bl4lock computers fail of overheating all the time because of dust, cleaning it out is a really good thing and also it speeds up your computer if it's cooler. get it?
This is what u call computer detailing next time put a vacuum inside the computer in a corner to keep the overdust from getting into other tight spots of the pc...
Hahaha...Yeah...Funny....I have a Soneta 3 500 case (just google) which has a LOCK on the side panel (Has a door too,in front of cd drive, power button...:P) but how can i open it..."....It's rather easy to open as it opens with a keyboard lock key which was used to......(to lock keyboards...wut?) at the time computers still used to run on coal" (the last part was a good one...)Keyboard lock key....anyone?Pictures?Where can i get?Thanks.....
Should have used that technique on my moms computer, heck I"m surprised her computer was still alive,it looked as if there was two years or more of dust.I noticed how much faster it ran after we cleaned it out,and defraged it.
@GIKKIO3D lol he didnt he said he lived in Asia which is hot and alot of sand and dusty floating in da air thats why it looks like it was filled with sand in SHARAh desert
For all the people who think spinning the fans with air can cause damage, here is the truth: It CAN only cause damage if the fan spinns conversely because in this case the fans acts like a dynamo and energizes the mainboard with power. But if you remove the connectors before this won´t happen.
Seccond big point is following, a lot of ppl think u can damage the bearing. Wrong! The fans doesn´t have any mechanical bearing, they are magneticly mounted. No touching parts inside
Spinning the fans period with an air compressor is very unsafe and unrecommended... i also see you smoke near the computer due to brownish colored dust... lol all fans should be sationary and held for maximum safely.
1. I live in Singapore, a tropical country (like hot hot hot) and I want to ask if it's safe to use a compressor?it has more moisture and may corrode metal parts.
2.How often do you think i should dedust my PC?
3.What compressor did you use in that video and how much did it cost you?
PS: I'm not exaggerating anything when I say that that dust in your pc is nothing to what I see here in SG. Dusts in PCs here include fur like dust cotton balls that clogged up\blankets cpu fan to heat sink. PCs always shuts down due to overheating.
Why do you say that? The machine went from overheating and crashing to working flawlessly. Australia can be very hot and all the dust, especially between the CPU fan and heatsink and inside the power supply, causes machines to fail regularly.
Not really, in theory, you shouldn't spin them too fast, but what is too fast? They normally spin at 3-4000 RPM. Of course if you are worried, stick your finger in the fan first and hold the blades in place. That video was shot a year ago, and the machine still works perfectly well.
@TheTechDoctorNetwork yeah, some fans are specified for that rpm range, but most of the case fan run at 500-1500 rpm. and spinning them with a compressor is.. let's say "more risky". glad that everything still works. :)
Yeah cleaning a pc about twice a year is great and stops your computer going on the blink. Now the dust build up in this pc is bad just like the dust build up in your expensive plasma or PS3. Buy a compressor it saves you a fortune on new items.

I'm now looking for something I can take out on the road with me (we are a mobile support business) maybe an old diving tank or converted BBQ gas tank.. watch this space.
@TheTechDoctorNetwork if you want something portable, buy a lot of compressed air cans, they work grate, and only cost about 8 bucks a can, but buy a lot because they are not sold in some country's/state's.
@PS3FreakZ A clean paint brush is a much better tool for cleaning dust from a PC. You shouldn't use an air compressor, as well as compressing air it also compresses moisture and compressed air can also cause static charge to build up on electronic parts, both of which are harmful to electronic circuits.
was that case a victim of an explosion in a flour factory?? geez!! lol
I'd go by what was posted about fans...try and keep them static when blasting them, they could be damaged spinning at speeds they are not designed to.
Good instructions. Just one thing: Try to avoid spinning up vents to high speeds as it could cause damage. I usualy block them with a cue tip or something similar.
I live in Eilat on the Red Sea which was/is a desert, the Arava desert.Funny thing is , since the city was started in 1949, it has been planted with trees and flower gardens which are all irrigated with timed sprinklers.Over the years the relative humidity has increased. That means desert/swamp coolers don't work as well.

The nozzles they have at Gas (Petrol) Stations have a connector specifically for inflating Car Tyres, so it would be a bit difficult to use.

it's better not to use a compressor, it has more moisture and may cause corrosion in metal parts...

That can be a concern, but here in Australia it is so dry that it isn't a problem if the compressor is well maintained.

The office it came from is a concrete floored tin shed. I've replaced a few of their machines and they were all pretty much the same.

An air compressor? Usually at a good hardware type shop.
