yes pope is still the head of a simbolic state since 1929 (Lateran pacts) but in fact 20 September 1870 is the end of the true pope's temporal power! And in all italian cities we have a street called "Via XX settembre".

Good question, I really don't know but my theory is things all fell apart when King Emmanuel was poisend by the Jesuits. That brought all the patriots moral low.
