Real Katanas are a processes to forge. The Tamahagane steel takes 3-4 days without sleep to forge - and even though the steel is worth 200x that of normal steel the forgemaster only sends the best bits with the best oxygenation to be crafted into katanas in a process which takes over 10 tons of carbon and like 8 tonnes Japanese iron sands. From what little I know - the process is deeply spiritual and a true art form. These swords are the souls of the samurai - souls can't be forge by machines.

@vashthefunker and to add in traditional Japanese military the Katana must be able to cut through 3 human bodies with Armour. when they took prisoners or had any dead enemy soldiers they would use those bodies equipped with full body Armour and stack them and then stab them. if the blade could not cut through them with the ease of a hot knife through butter it was thrown away and never recycled

A little note why you shouldn't use the katana. The blade gets dull after first use. After it get blood on it it will become slightly more ineffective. Oh, ninjas didn't use katanas;)

..... a katana is made as far i know with iron and steel, in the past steel swords werent realy sharp but toke long to brake. an iron sword would brake fast but was realy sharp. japanese smiths found a way to use the back made out of steel and the front part made out of iron

I actually forged my own blade as well, more specificly, a Zanbato. (Think a rectangular great-sword) Now, I'm not a small man by any standards, I stand at 6'4 and 250 pounds. Only genuine historical blades, belonging to emperors or something, would cost $300k...

While a quality modern reproduction, made with modern steel and methods would cost you about $3k, without any compromise in performance.

YES! Finally something that shows just how bad those crappy display katanas are. A battle ready reproduction katana should be made of carbon steel (1045 at the least and 1095 at the most), be full tang, and have proper heat tempering. Keep in mind though, China, although they make a lot of display katanas, they also make all of the battle ready katanas as well. Cheness, Hanwei, Dynasty Forge, Ronin Katana, and Hung Shing True Sharp are all reliable, offering battle ready katanas.

I have always thought those display modals and replicas dishonor the blades constructed in the past as multiple society's developed swords of all different types on there own each type has it's own unique heritage such as the Katana for one example which is most likely the most dishonored by the fake pieces made in a factory and even if you ask to buy battle ready be sure check if the retailer is a reputable dealer for your own sake ensure quality and it will ensure you.

This just shows the difference between a "wall hanger" and a real sword. Do your research if you want a quality katana. You're looking for full tang construction and a quality steel (high carbon or spring steel). For the love of god and the sake of humanity stay away from "rat tail" construction. Cheness cutlery makes some good Katana's for an affordable price.
