The great thing about this episode was the irony. Claire was always preaching to Cliff about eating right and staying in shape and when the tables were turned, Claire was coming unglued. To her credit though, she fought through and reached her goal in the end. Great episode and Debbie was hysterical as the crazy fitness instructor.

Unrelated to the episode, but Debbie Allen killed A Different World by making it too Afrocentric.

The first season of a Different World portrayed Hillman as a multicultural school, then Debbie Allen took over the reins and turned it into a HBC. It basically relied on racial humor for its laughs at the end of the day, which is something that the Cosby Show never did.

They bordered on being Afrocentric, especially in the last 3 seasons. I applaud the show for tackling issues the other shows were afraid to touch, however, there seemed to be too many stereotypes. Freddie's boyfriend, Shazza, was perhaps one of the most bigoted characters I've seen in a sitcom. Dwayne couldn't just be a smart black man, he had to portrayed as a nerd. The most sensible black characters, Kim and Jaleesa, were never given the face time that the stereotypical ones were.

And you're right, Shazza was a bigot, but I always thought the point was to showcase black people from different walks of life. PS, last time I checked, Kimmy wasn't a nerd.

Dwayne was a nerd? How so? He was smart but he also had girlfriends, went on dates and hung out with the guys.

I never saw Dwayne as a nerd, he was more like your average engineering major, Now The Colonel's son, that was a nerd. If Freddie's bf was bigoted rather than just socially conscious then that was just proof of the show showing diversity.

I disagree, I think you're confusing racial humor with the fact that A Different World actually delt with the charector's being black. Usually when race was brought up, it was for a serious storyline or episode, like how Kimberly was dating a white guy, the time Dwayne and the one guy where sent to jail after a football game or the image of a Mammy.

Different World was always portrayed as an HBC even back when they referenced it on the Cosby Show. There only character that was nonblack was Maggie. BTW, there are other races at HBCs (spoken from a Spelmanite). Kim's white boyfriend Matthew and Kenu went to Avery, a school close by.
