COCKSUCKERS, it doesn't matter the camera, what matters is the photographer...if you love photography you'll do it even with a compact..consumer kids.
I have a Nikon D3000 and I was wondering if you can take out the focusing screen out also? I have this black dot on the right side of my viewfinder and it's a bother. I hope you can reply back to this message as soon as possible. Thanks
I just did this and it works great!!!! I too, have many very good manual lenses and I just can't focus all the time without the split prism.
One thing though, don't turn your camera upside down after taking out the screen. There is a little metal frame, like a gasket, that fell out when I did this. I carefully put it back in and had no problems.
Quick question, I have a D40 too. I took it to a cold place and then I had a problem with both focusing through the viewfinder (was blurry and wouldn't focus) and with the shutter (it wouldn't go finish taking a pic, as a result, I only had half a pic recorded). I went inside and found a piece of plastic, not sure how it got there, and removed it and now it takes pictures, no problem with shutter. However, it doesn't focus still. would doing this fix that problem?
That was like watching someone give birth - I could hardly bare to watch!
Why you'd play around with the insides of your camera like that I'll never know. Whatever floats your boat I guess, but I'd never put my beautiful D40 through tha kind of process!
I just Removed the focusing screen of my Nikon D60 and the dust was somewhere above the focusing screen... i cant reach it... its trapped between the viewfinder and the glass above the focusing screen... any ideas? video?
@TaGzDRuMMeR well... took a couple of hits to the camera so the particle could drop and lay in the bottom of the internal viewfinder, plain luck i guess... but its gone, and its whats is important :)
I tried to dismantle the camera via the viewfinder but got scared and put the bolts on it again... its a pretty expensive camera, wouldnt recommend to do it... but again, there is no nikon service in my town...
i was looking on fourms about the exchange of the focus screen but, the thing is i like to focus things outside of the katz eye(had an old film nikon that used the same screen) but i really would like to have a better clarity i hate it when you take a closer look and things arent so great. do you ever focus outside of the katz eye?
you can focus... but the best thing is to use the microprism and then move the objetive to the place you want. Off course, you hace to keep the same distance with the focused object...
does anyone know how to clean the focusing screen? are there any dangers if I use sensor cleaning solution? And I would like to know about the mirror too.Does it require some special cleaning solution ? I accidentaly touched the mirror and a corner of the focusing screen with my finger.
I have dust sitting on the focus screen and I needed to clean it off because I can see it through the view finder, but I'm just afraid I will mess up the camera.
hey has anyone tryed this and still have their old screen and would be able to post it too be? ive mest mine up and cant find anywere that sells just the standard one in the uk!!! if anyone has one that they could send me id be soooooo greatful!!!
Wow, thanks for the Video! I want to try that, too. I am using 90 % of manual lenses (yes, I am also metering manually, which isn't much of a problem.) and would love to have a little focus aid, since my eyes are not the best. @_@;
Thanks for the vid. I have a D40 and a couple of old manual lens. Just purchased the cheap ebay focusing screen to help on my manual focusing. THis vid will certainly help me.
The specifications of the focus screen of D40 is Thickness 1.65mm, width 25.4mm, Height 20.4mm, the center are 7.2mm from the depths, 12.9mm from the left depths corner.
is this the same for a d3000?

@Xyb3rTeCh The Nikon D40 is a very good camera for the small price it cost!
I work as a professional photographer and for a long time i had a
D40 for my studio portrait photography and the imagequality is good...
(Printed A3 formats with nice result)
If you are a beginner this IS the perfect camera!

A lenspen might be your best bet. Don't use any kind of solution inside the camera!

thanks! I think it's best if I take it to an authorised service to get it cleaned.
horsycos88 2 years ago
use mild dish washer solution, clean it and raise under running tap water. Donot let any droplet of water on it when raise. Air dry it.
for mirror use the lens pen or lens cloth wipe it in
one way motion and never use the same spiece to wipe it again.
enjoy!

You can get a special screen that makes it easier to manually focus. If you're planning on using autofocus, don't worry about this.
DavidTheDivine 3 years ago

Thanks for the vid! I'll probably do this sometime soon. Is this the katz eye? Or the cheaper model?
manong1234 4 years ago
This is the cheap screen which I purchased in ebay.
If there is the plan that you buy, I think that katz eye is better.
7x86 4 years ago
Why would you want to bother with the cost with a D40?
I personally have D200 with a Katzeye for manual nikkor lenses...
But with a body that can't meter with non-CPU lenses - why'd you bother?
BTW... Metal tweezers are a no no.
No gloves aswell.
Well, if you're happy with it. I suppose you're fine.

I judged that I was suitable for a remodeling base because D40 was cheap.
I would not have the courage to remodel it like you if I had D200.
Btw, this remodeling means that i don't want to be regulated by a lens.
We can confirm the photography result immediately, so exposure is a trial and error.
I reflect on having used metal tweezers. We should use the plastic one.
7x86 4 years ago
Yeah, okay - I agree.
With the new lower prices of D200s they are great for modification.
A friend of mine sold her D40 kit for $300... so I suppose it's getting better and better for these types of modifications!
Kudos.

WHICH SCREEN IS IT???
Madwand1 4 years ago
Did you replace it with a katzeye? How exactly does this screen make it easier to manual focus?
funpoleece 4 years ago
It is easy to focus a manual than normal screen.
However, this screen is out of best position, so focus seems to match slightly toward you.
7x86 4 years ago
Ooh, now I want one! Is there a certain size/specification focus screen needed?
Azewaldo 4 years ago
The specifications of the focus screen of D40 is Thickness 1.65mm, width 25.4mm, Height 20.4mm, the center are 7.2mm from the depths, 12.9mm from the left depths corner.
