I also remember this when it came out and I loved it. I'd seen Joey on some shows but I had no idea she could belt out a song like this. Great job and she was a little hottie.
Wow, it's been a long time since I heard this one! I remember back in 1972 a DJ on the radio back announced this song as "the trumpet player injuring himself" on this song! Joey was going through some rough personal times when this album came out. Thanks for posting.
I began my wonderful radio career at 17 back in 1974. A transvestite, who called himself Diane would call me to hear this tune every weekend! Weekend /overnight Top 40 radio was the GREATEST!!!
A fave of mine for so long! I stil have the single (with "Pieces" on the B side), but did buy the Joey Heatherton Greatest Hits CD when it came out. Thanks for putting this on youtube!
One day I was out and about in LA and I had to go to Beverly Hills. Before I left the house i had been listening to Gone and Someone To Watch Over Me.This was awhile back. I got out of the car on Beverly Drive and their was standing Joey Heatherton. I walked up to her and told I just finished listening to her version of Someone to Watch over me and told her it was the best rendition. I made her day.
I bought this 45 in 1972. A big love affair had just ended and I just wore out the record playing it over and over and crying. Looking back it's sort of funny today, but it wasn't then! I had no idea the song was a cover of a Ferlin Husky hit until this evening when I read of his death.
@taytaytoo Me neither. Never knew it was a cover until maybe ten years ago when I heard Husky's version played on the Westwood One nostalgia feed on a local AM station.
She was born twenty years too late. By the time she was becoming an adult, this sort of song/singing was on the way out. I was born in 1953, and I have had a smokin' hot crush on Joey since I was in junior high school in 1965...a crush which continues. She should have married me instead of Lance Rentzel; both lives might have turned out better.
I also loved this song, but couldn't remember who the heck sang it. i was able to trace Ferlin Huskin's version, but remembered from high school there was a great soulful female version. Today, on a chance, using google and youtube i was able to score! Thanks for posting, what did we do before YouTube?
@600keith I just heard this song on an old " Kacey Kasem top 40 countdown " retro from 1972. I said to myself, please mention the song title and artist. He did and I U-Tubed it. WOW ! Listening to Joey sing this song takes me back and her voice is flawless. A true gem !! PEACE...
@mrstevehartman very pleased to see someone else appreciates this record!! i love good 70's music and this is a great example of 70's magic! she can sing!!!!
I've always loved this song. In more recent years, I've discovered the earlier hit version by Ferlin Husky (the 1957 one, not one he did even earlier under the name Terry Preston), and I like that one a lot, too. Both of these remind me a little bit (or maybe more than a little bit) of Neil Diamond's original recording of "Red, Red Wine".
@rslitman Same with me. Never even knew of Ferlin Husky's hit until perhaps ten years ago when I heard it played on a nostalgia station. I admit I'm partial to Joey's.
She really nails this song. I wonder what Ferlin thought the first time he heard her version?

Always loved this song. This is another song that I bet Susan Boyle could hit out of the park!! Would be wonderful to hear it renewed again...

A little too late for Joey as this type of music passed in the latter 60s. However, late is better than never and she does an excellant job of it !!

Great song and a great performance by Joey Heatherton; this is one of my top 20 songs of all time. It takes me back to 72.

I've Always Felt That Ms Heatherton is an "Underated" Singer. Listen to her vocal Range and She hits the High Notes with Ease!
I think that She made Poor Choices in Her Life, Men, Drugs, Alcohol.
All of that stood in Her Way of Becoming a Super Star.

I didn't remember that she was such a belter. She does a good job covering this old Ferlin Husky song, though. Sings it like she means it.

The only 60's beauty who tops Joey in looks is the late, great Sharon Tate.

I know this was released in '72, but the production values are pure 1960's and I love it all the more for that.

Thanks for posting, Joey drove me crazy on those Serta sleepers back in the early seventies. Kristin Chenoweth has assumed that role today.
