Nascar did not make the daytonas illegal, what they did do though is make a rule that winged cars could not run larger than 350 c.i. engines. Factory Daytonas had 440 or 426 Hemi engines.

@dinerdave52 I did notice that and was quite happy to hear it rumble away. My own car is what would be labeled as a ricer in the States, since it only has 4 cyl and a 2 barrel carb. It was built in 1996 but its design is like in the 60s. So the exhaust is just a straight pipe running out from the manifold. No filters, no converters, no anything. When it's cold and it idles it makes the same thumping noise I heard here. Not as loudly as this unfortunately and it does vibrate since it's an L4.
