I saw this production when I lived in NYC in the late 70s. It was truly one of the worst shows I've ever seen. Miles of gold lamé, ridiculous dance numbers and Melba Moore butchering "Stranger in Paradise" live in my nightmares. Gilbert Price was a standout however.
OMG, what memories. The show was a disaster, and played previews for months, to earn back its costs. The commercial also played on NY television for MONTHS!

It couldn't have been that much of a "disaster".
It was nominated for four Tony Awards & two Drama Desk Awards.
