@Pandacamper What does processor have to do with boot time , U MUST have a horrible hard drive with bad read speeds because boot is all about hard drive .
I have a macbook pro at work I use for photo and video editing. Its the 2.6ghz i7 version. The thing is horrible. Encoding video is so slow and the thing gets so hot you'd think it was going to melt through my desk. Photoshop and in-design lag out on large files. My older i7 920 PC absolutely destroys the mac in all the same adobe programs and cost about 1/2 the price lol..
@Armaangandevia1 Unlikely its brand new... Encoding video with Adobe Premiere Pro the thing just sucks and gets hot as hell. There is nothing running on it, its a company laptop not my personal one so there are no programs / apps running or install besides adobe cs5 master.. Mac's just suck and charge top dollar for outdated hardware :(
34 secs...that's slow! ...against a SSD swop out. I have just installed a SSD in my old 2009 2.26 Core 2 Duo 13" MacBook Pro. I use the MBP in the field for rush edits so need something that will sustain knocks and moves. Another aspect of the fast boot/shutdown times is that I hate having to keep a client waiting for the MB to boot. My boot times? 15sec...shutdown...<2seconds
Hey, rich kid, if I had as much as money as you, I'd go out there and get an Alienware m18x with the 4.0ghz factory overclocked i7 processor 32gb ram and two GeForce GT m580 2gb video cards. As for the booting time, it depends on the hard drive speed.
I would rather buy a mac because I had an HP laptop for about a year and it is completely destroyed but I bought a mac about 8 months ago and it is like new.

doesn t import to much who booting first......................is very important the price .i have a hp i7 quadcore 4 gb ram ,1gb ati at 699 eu price .(pavilion dv6).the same specs on mac -2000Dollars .:(
The hilarious thing is my $700 i7 based PC is faster than a $2500 imac, and I was able to get i7 more than a full year before apple released i7 to the macs. Which caused them to up the price from $1700 to $1999, lol.
@rfsent5 Fast forward a few years from now: "The hilarious thing is my Mac is still running rock solid, while you'll have a hard time selling your virus-plagued PC on eBay for more than $100".
@halosux4life Not exactly. Although the HDD has to read the OS, there is RAM that stores it, and the processor that puts everything where it needs to go. So every spec on your computer besides maybe the sound and video card will effect your boot-up time.
@rifall put it this way.... booting off of a 5400rpm hard drive compared to a 10000rpm with the same setup computer, i have seen as big as 30 seconds difference
@halosux4life Yes, but compare computers with half a gig and 2 gigs, I've noticed a 5 second difference. Compare computers with a 2.0ghz processor and a 3.2ghz processor, I've noticed as much as a 15 second difference. the HDD is not the ONLY thing that determines your boot speed.
@halosux4life not if its the same drive. on the same bus, with the same bridge chip..... at that point it becomes a matter of cache speeds on the chip.
He's saying ' if the extra money is worth for faster booting' . How stupid is that? You don;t buy an i7 for faster booy up, but for faster performance. That's really stupid man.
@mcalgar Lolol... If the i5 won I was gonna have a something to say in the comments, such as, "IT'S NOT FAIR YOU BOGGED DOWN THE i7!" or the likes... Also, my HP Craptop has varying bootup times, it ranges between 3:45 and 7:30! It's REALLY slow and REALLY bogged down though... I only have 8 GB left on the 100 GB HDD. Yeah.. it's pretty bad.
I love Macs for their simplicity in their OS. But I wish it could run all games windows can. If I had a Mac I would Install Windows right away and have 2 operating systems on it.
Oh and by the way I built my own gaming PC and I see it's limitations for everyday use as well as in photo/video editing. I consider it a gaming console, as the operating system (Windows 7 64-bit) is too clumsy for anything else.
This is not a mac vs. PC debate. This is a mac vs. mac video. Anything Windows sucks if placed next to a mac with the same specs. Dollars aside, I'd rather have a mac that I know is built well in comparison to your Frankenstein PC build.
Hey guys, a speedy response would be awesome, I have been offered a used Macbook Pro 15" 2.4ghz, with 4gb memory for around $600. He has the standard applications installed on it, OSX Lion MS Word, MS Powerpoint and MS Excel along with Openoffice, IWORKS 11, and ILIFE 11. He said he has owned it for a year and a half. Is this worth the price, or should I go for a new PC?
@ctophman1 as far as I'm concerned, macs are only good for video editing and picture editing. if that's what you do you probably need a more powerful mac then that one and if not, you're better off with a PC.
Meaning that IBM / levano is the most durable kind of laptop? I'm sorry, but I would have to disagree.
From my experience with laptops, it seems that IBM and levano are some of the worst I've held. They feel unsteady, and have had repeated screen, hard drive, optical, and even keyboard problems.
A MacBook Pro Is made out of a solid block of aluminum, without losing functionality.
Along with being sexy, an equivalent to my $1600 mac in IBM is about $2000. So I saved an extra $400.
i like the i7 personally on my macbook. i thought about getting the macbook air but it didn't have a CD drive so i got the Pro Instead. I Love it! if your plan to get on get a hard cover it it they scratch Easily!
I have the i7 and I don't know why anyone would want anything less ? It's like buying a new car you don't go to the showroom and buy last years model if you want a new car.......duh?
apple = overpriced. unless youre a complete computer noob i'd recommend going pc all the way. take that 1500 you'd spend on your mac and make something twice as fast....and if you really love apple just put mac os on it.
Any more it is not truly a mac, it is all based on PC components with a different OS. so basically you are paying more for an OS, that has very little support for most of today's applications.
I have a 13 inch MBP i7. People always complain about the cost of macs, but honestly what I did is put it on a credit card (with no interest) and paid a bit off a tiny bit each month. It's the best way for a student to be able to afford a mac, if you're responsible. I use my mac for internet, word processing and graphic design- it's AWESOME!
@ubiquitousfacts Cant afford ? my home built gaming rig is worth more than 8000 dollars, and its faster than apples shitty top of the line mac pro junk!
Well, holy shit. I'm not a gamer... I'm a poor grad student- how could I EVER afford that, haha. Good for you, but us regular middle class people who aren't gamers- I'll stick with less expensive computers.
@Andrew21yo PCs are okay but only for people who can't afford or has never owned one I have had a Black MacBook 13" 2.16 GHz since mid 2007 I thought I wouldn't like it but using it for just an hour made me change my mind :)
Bootup time is mostly about disk speed, rather then processor speed. But as high end processors are cheaper than fast HDs and basic consumers fail to know that, companies keep upping the processors and using slow HDs so they can maximize sales and keep the product price attractive.
@pvaz Wow! you opened my eyes dude, thxs! So, let me know if I'm wrong, if I choose an i5 with a fast disk, I would have more speed than with a i7 with a slow one, that's what you're saying?
@CroxificioSatriani On most situations Yes! The i7 will outperform the i5 on situations that would put your i5 to 100% processor use. Those are rare, unless you are consistently running processor demanding tasks such doing complex math problems, 3D rendering. All other situation will benefit more from the increase disk speed as you're not likely to stuck the i5 at 100%. That is if you need to budget your choices, if not, get the i7 quad core with an SSD.
It's up to you if you want a faster laptop but the major upgrade is to SSD from HDD is when you see the 3-4 minute to only 30 seconds boot up difference. SSD takes one second to open an app that HDD takes 15 second to open. Other upgrades like processor and graphics memory won't make a world of difference to an average Joe out there. A must upgrade is an SSD & 8GB of RAM. AppleCare is also a must for laptops especially, out of own experience.
i bought the 15 , inch i7 2,66 ghz macbook pro with a 256 ssd and the boot up time with 110 gigs of data at the moment is ,.. 16 secs,.. its down load speeds off wifi per gig is just 3 and a half mins,... SSD'S are the dogs bollox,..
this is the marketing genius of Apple....they make you dissatisfied with your purchase before you even get a chance to enjoy it. thus you are constantly looking to upgrade to satisfy some benchmark test that will make no real difference in your daily use of the computer. C'mon does it really matter if it takes 14 seconds to boot vs 28 seconds...this is some kind of a psychological game they play to separate you from your money. tapping into your deep rooted desire for superiority...
SSD is a must-have for both laptop and desktop users. I didn't know the reason before I purchased one. Especially, if you have only a laptop, please get SSD. It will consume less power and a lot safter than motor based HDD. You may drop it but the data is protected. Also, HDD is the one heating up mainboard temperature, it's better to have SSD.
@stevesg92...a computer that works flawlessly for 9 years is actually useless...in 9 years technology evolves so much that you would have to buy a completely new computer. Depending on the type of things you do on your computer a Mac might be a better option but so can be the PC...that can be upgraded a lot easier and has a more logical composure. There are people who buy Macs and then emulate Windows on them...doh!..with the cash you spend on a Mac you buy a much more powerful PC.
@552PresidentKr3m1in and not even that i dont see windows running windows 9, the top rated music software in the world? windows, is good for ppl who sit at a desk and type numbers and BS like that. there garbage i mean 85% of them are made from low grade plastic, low grade screens. i work with computers i know how windows are made. crappy. and yes i grew up with windows. and grew up with alot of headaches. went to apple and worry free for 6 years. since i started going with them. t
@552PresidentKr3m1in lol once a month? my uncle has windows, my gf has windows and the internet is slow, i start it up (after it takes years) i get 7 pop ups about install this and install that. and i have over 10 apps and windows open on my mac book pro i5, 250gb SSD, 8gb ram. and runs like a dream. i go to best buy and see ppl looking at macs i ask them why they say bc within 3 years we went through 2 windows lol what a surprise? not. that why best buy will point ppl twards macs.
Are You running on SSD or HDD? That can be all the diffrence.
Not to mention RAM, Programs installed, bus, and your version of windows.
The i7 booted in 37 seconds, which isn't that bad, although I can't say it can really compete with 6 :-)
As said by Poler777, a mac is like a Mercedes, while a PC is like a Subaru WRX. A Subaru WRX can do laps around a mercedes, but once you go mercedes, you never turn back.
@MrChewycrackers Sorry dude. It may be one of the sexiest laptop out there but in terms of durability there are only two kinds of Laptops: IBM ( Lenovo ) and Others.
@3ogdy slow? Um..... WHAT?! and I wouldn't say that a computer that works flawlessly for 9 years is "expensive bullshit".... my uncle still has his macbook from 2002 and it works perfectly.... a pc computer.... a few years the most so really "expensive" becomes > cheap in the long run
@QualityCompare My 13 inch SSD is faster than the 2 that he compared. They are regular hdd. After timing mine, it booted in 15 seconds, which is faster than what these two that he tested did. I have no idea how was a 15 inch SSD is, probably faster than mine. Dunno, but mine definitely is faster than these 2.
actuley the i5 hade more programming dun to its drivers and the cpu is tuned better. if you truley do every tweak on the internet 2 both systems the i5 will out perform
Do you even have to do such a comparison?

I have a 13 inch MBP i7. People always complain about the cost of macs, but honestly what I did is put it on a credit card (with no interest) and paid a bit off a tiny bit each month. It's the best way for a student to be able to afford a mac, if you're responsible. I use my mac for internet, word processing and graphic design- it's AWESOME!
ubiquitousfacts 5 months ago
@ubiquitousfacts Cant afford ? my home built gaming rig is worth more than 8000 dollars, and its faster than apples shitty top of the line mac pro junk!
gh3860 4 months ago
@gh3860
Well, holy shit. I'm not a gamer... I'm a poor grad student- how could I EVER afford that, haha. Good for you, but us regular middle class people who aren't gamers- I'll stick with less expensive computers.
ubiquitousfacts 4 months ago
@Andrew21yo PCs are okay but only for people who can't afford or has never owned one I have had a Black MacBook 13" 2.16 GHz since mid 2007 I thought I wouldn't like it but using it for just an hour made me change my mind :)

Bootup time is mostly about disk speed, rather then processor speed. But as high end processors are cheaper than fast HDs and basic consumers fail to know that, companies keep upping the processors and using slow HDs so they can maximize sales and keep the product price attractive.
pvaz 6 months ago
@pvaz Wow! you opened my eyes dude, thxs! So, let me know if I'm wrong, if I choose an i5 with a fast disk, I would have more speed than with a i7 with a slow one, that's what you're saying?
CroxificioSatriani 6 months ago
@CroxificioSatriani On most situations Yes! The i7 will outperform the i5 on situations that would put your i5 to 100% processor use. Those are rare, unless you are consistently running processor demanding tasks such doing complex math problems, 3D rendering. All other situation will benefit more from the increase disk speed as you're not likely to stuck the i5 at 100%. That is if you need to budget your choices, if not, get the i7 quad core with an SSD.
pvaz 6 months ago
@pvaz Thanks a lot

Macs are for editing sound, video and pictures. Work fine browsing the internet too but PC is more flexible. i7 is obviously faster

AppleCare is also a must for laptops especially, out of own experience.
andreipetunin 7 months ago
i bought the 15 , inch i7 2,66 ghz macbook pro with a 256 ssd and the boot up time with 110 gigs of data at the moment is ,.. 16 secs,.. its down load speeds off wifi per gig is just 3 and a half mins,... SSD'S are the dogs bollox,..
FLYGUYNO1 7 months ago
this is the marketing genius of Apple....they make you dissatisfied with your purchase before you even get a chance to enjoy it. thus you are constantly looking to upgrade to satisfy some benchmark test that will make no real difference in your daily use of the computer. C'mon does it really matter if it takes 14 seconds to boot vs 28 seconds...this is some kind of a psychological game they play to separate you from your money. tapping into your deep rooted desire for superiority...

DPCB01 7 months ago

@552PresidentKr3m1in and not even that i dont see windows running windows 9, the top rated music software in the world? windows, is good for ppl who sit at a desk and type numbers and BS like that. there garbage i mean 85% of them are made from low grade plastic, low grade screens. i work with computers i know how windows are made. crappy. and yes i grew up with windows. and grew up with alot of headaches. went to apple and worry free for 6 years. since i started going with them. t
foxracer1231 8 months ago
@552PresidentKr3m1in lol once a month? my uncle has windows, my gf has windows and the internet is slow, i start it up (after it takes years) i get 7 pop ups about install this and install that. and i have over 10 apps and windows open on my mac book pro i5, 250gb SSD, 8gb ram. and runs like a dream. i go to best buy and see ppl looking at macs i ask them why they say bc within 3 years we went through 2 windows lol what a surprise? not. that why best buy will point ppl twards macs.
foxracer1231 8 months ago
@JayzBeerz
Sorry, I just wanted to put that out their :-)

@3ogdy slow? Um..... WHAT?! and I wouldn't say that a computer that works flawlessly for 9 years is "expensive bullshit".... my uncle still has his macbook from 2002 and it works perfectly.... a pc computer.... a few years the most so really "expensive" becomes > cheap in the long run

Damn, I have the new 13" mbp i5 with ssd and it's a lot faster than both. I should time it and see how blazing fast it really is.
joemaijinni 9 months ago
@joemaijinni i have 13 and 15 inch i5 ssd and 15 i7 ssd, the 15 inch boots way faster than the 13 inch, so i bet you didnt time it right
QualityCompare 7 months ago
@QualityCompare My 13 inch SSD is faster than the 2 that he compared. They are regular hdd. After timing mine, it booted in 15 seconds, which is faster than what these two that he tested did. I have no idea how was a 15 inch SSD is, probably faster than mine. Dunno, but mine definitely is faster than these 2.
