Harrison Ford: the man who is so good, he can shoot an Arab while food poisoned in an unscripted scene based on a random comment by a crew member, "why doesn't he shoot the guy and get it over with?"
good martial arts, this also shows up in Ip Man 2 as advice. ~"i'd just shoot you". i think it was in the film anyway, if i'm wrong then it's on the special features dvd of the first film.
I think it's probably okay to assume that almost everyone in the world knows about the dysentary/diarrhea problem curtailing the whip-vs-sword faceoff. Probably not necessary to go over it AGAIN. Or do go over it again. Up to you.
The scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark as shot for the film was dramatically shortened; the original script intended Indy to fight the swordsman with a lengthy choreography and usage of his whip. However, Harrison Ford along with most of the crew were suffering from dysentery, and could not wear their trousers for more than a few minutes. Ford then suggested they "just shoot the f***er". Steven Spielberg agreed resulting in the biggest laugh of the film and one of its most memorable sequences.[1]
@Videogametourist I remember watching ROTLA 30 years ago. When Indy shot the Arab swordsman, the whole audience broke out in laughter! I guess what makes that scene so effective is it's something that you least expected.
Sometime when he finally is tired of beating his dead horse Star Wars arse he may proceed butchering the rest of his filimg career including this, Probably he edit the swordsman to deflect the bullet with his sword or some unbelievable crap.
@SaltySpoons777 That sounds like something they would do in star wars not indiana jones but then again they had firey ghost come out of the ark and firey saucer men in the fourth one.
@GrumpyMcfart Lucas was heavily involved, but ultimately Spielberg makes the decisions here, and he's told everyone that he didn't like E.T. and won't be editing anymore of his films.
@Disneythievesrock Why the heck didn't he like E.T? Not enough violence for him or doesn't like friendly aliens? If aliens came in peace some idiot likely would attack them so they would get pissed off and blow up the planet. Actually a plot similar to that was on Outer Limits where some space marines attacked and killed 9 feet tall alien children on a camping trip so the alien adults attacked the earth in response.
@hydrolito - pretty much yep. they're disguisted at how the problems here are all that way on purpose. first it was like, oh you have problems? well you need to do this, this and this. then the aliens realised - the problem is that people know what to do and what not to do, but there's enough morons actually choosing to do evil, given the choice. so they can act out and pretend there are problems caused by somethings else. they fuck nature up on purpose down here.
@GrumpyMcfart no worries. Spielberg wouldnt allow it. to him "it is best not to edit an award winning old film. it is best to show how film as improved over the years."
@GrumpyMcfart Actually, Harrison Ford was meant to fight the swordsman for a little while, but he wanted to make a joke of killing him like that. Lucas liked that, so he let him use it.
@AwesomelyEpic50 WRONG! Actually the truth is that Harrison wanted to get it over with personally. when going over the long fight he pointed out he had a gun and said "why dont i just shoot the son of a bitch?" and be4 filming, there is 5 sec b4 they say ACTION and in those seconds, Ford went ahead and shot the guy which scared him so he fell and sine all the cameraman broke out laughing, Spielberg decided to include it.
Who bets he got shot in the face?

The guy with the sword was butthurt because Indy drew a picture of Muhammad. Indy responded to his death threats the way all Americans should.

Whilst filming the scene in Egypt Harrison got Dysentery and couldn't film the original script. And on that day a legend was born.
