If the cork is made from a natural cork it can be composted. Even synthetic cork can be recycled although there are generally specialized recycling facilities for those.

Any container that can't be recycled can still be used to store old cooking oil in. Many people throw this away, but the oil can be filtered and cleaned, making it usable for making soap or fuel.

Very helpful, thanks! One comment about recycling cans. After I put the lid into the can, I crumple the can so that the lid doesn't fall out. More importantly, it makes it impossible for animals to stick their noses in the can and accidentally cut themselves on the sharp edge of the lid.
