@icicicles why not cut the head of the mushroom and stick it on a piece of aluminium foil and leave it for 24 hours to make a spore print. That way you don't have to smash and waste a good shroom
@icicicles Oh I nearly forgot. When you're making the spore print you got to keep your hands nice and sterile and when the spores drop onto the foil neatly fold to foil over the spore print and keep it sealed inside the foil. Nasty bacteria can kill spores and you don't want that.
Puffballs don't produce spores until they "pop", like a balloon. And spore prints are only really interesting with gilled mushroom. More fun to throw these. They aren't endangered, don't have a brain, and no, they don't taste all that great. No harm done, and at least this guy is getting out in the woods with his family, not being a troll.

Giant puffballs are edible, when you fry them in butter they're great! They taste like... well, they taste kinda like butter. They have protein, carbohydrates, a few vitamins, and even some minerals. It's food! Some people really like 'em, but I guess some people just smash 'em.
note: Not all puffballs are edible - some are poisonous - the Pig Poison Puffball is... you guessed it. Get a good field guide and make sure you know what you're eating! The Giant Puffball is pretty distinctive.

for those who are freaking out over the smashed mushroom remember he caused a huge release of spores when doing that so an army of those things could grow back to replace those things given the right conditions. nature is based off of chaos and order so this guy didn't really do to much harm if any in the long run. Now letting Tony Hayward anywhere near this forest??!! don't even want to think about it. gulf of mexico all over again.

Yes guys he is being destructive. When you were young your parents taught you not to destroy mushrooms, but in reality you are spreading the spores and creating rather than destroying.

Giant puffballs are edible, when you fry them in butter they're great! They taste like... well, they taste kinda like butter. They have protein, carbohydrates, a few vitamins, and even some minerals. It's food! Some people really like 'em, but I guess some people just smash 'em.
note: Not all puffballs are edible - some are poisonous - the Pig Poison Puffball is... you guessed it. Get a good field guide and make sure you know what you're eating! The Giant Puffball is pretty distinctive.

WOW! What a chance to teach a child. That would've been a science experiment out of this world for the child. Because of stronzo adults, he never saw it whole. What a moment missed for a child, to experience a sense of awe and wonder. BRAINLESS adult was impressed by the plant but the growing child never saw it coming. The adult probably later licked his hands and got diarrhea for three days. lol
