Bud had his head cracked open and his skull split by a cop's nightstick when Bud stepped in trying to protect Monk from the cop around 1947. Bud's head trauma left him with years of nasty headaches and lead to his being in and out of psychiatric institutions and multiple shock treatments for ten years. It also lead him to an alcohol problem which turned out to be a double problem in that he would nget drunk after only a couple of glasses of wine.
