The kicks to the baby are not a sign of aggression. In the wild the baby must be up on its feet at quickly as possible. They are situmalating the baby to get up.  Great video.

it's not like she would survive in the wild. they can't just place her in some group out there. the others probably wouldn't take her in their group. and it is important for breeding programs. there are less and less of those elephants.

you dont understand, there are plenty of zoos which return bred animals to the wild. Like pandas for instance.

+ they have another function. Show those animals which kids etc. will never see under normal circumstances, and show them how important it is to save the species. Cuz theyll be our future leaders. (the kids)

Het baby'tje lag ineens op de grond. Ik begreep dat ze zelfs in Antwerpen (er toch bovenop staand) het grote wonder hebben gemist.

Dat klopt, in de zoo zelf hebben ook maar weinig mensen het gezien want ze dachten zelf dat het pas die nacht zou gebeuren waardoor de meeste verzorgers naar huis waren om te douchen enzo.

In the wild, the mama elephant, and other female relatives of the baby, surround the infant right after birth to protect it from lions and other predators, as baby elephants are very easy prey. They are urging the baby to stand, which is imperative to do immediately in the wild. It is interesting to see that despite living in a zoo, the elephants' natural instincts stay intact.

Ik zat voor computer toen we ineens opgeschrikt werden door het helse lawaai van de olifanten... en toen lag ze daar... het nieuwe wondertje van onze Antwerpse Zoo. Het was heel ontroerend. We hopen dat alles goed blijft gaan en zullen haar binnenkort graag "live" in onze stad gaan bewonderen !

Wat een geweldige beelden ik was net drie kwartier te laat voor de geboorte maar gelukkig dankzij deze plaatsing heb ik er toch van kunnen genieten heel veel dank dat je het met ons wilt delen.

I have been watching for a long time. It seems very scarey . is this normal behaviour.? I feel poor baby must be exhausted with all the movement of the others. Pleas can someone tell me if everything is alright. i do not speak german so don't understand. Thankyou from U.K. :)

Everything is o.k. The little sister was a bit dominant, but mother Phyo Phyo and the aunt kept her away. Although the baby had some kicks and pushes from her sister.

It's nature I guess. The people of the zoo are very releaved everything went fine. The next 24 hours will be critcal. The big male elephant Dumbo hasn't met the newborn baby yet.
