Ok. There are some things going wrong here. First of all the poor horse is terrified. Have him walk beside a veteran horse who doesnt care about what's going on around him. That will show the other horse that there is nothing to be afraid of. Second, check his tack. Something could be pinching or pulling on him and he is rearing to get it off of him. On the bright side nobody is beating this horse, no one is yanking on him or whipping him. They are being gently and letting him figure it out.

The horse is not in poor condition, the whack at the head was on the heavy handed side, but smacking a horse (all be it with an open hand and not that hard) for whacking into you, like it did into that guy, is not over the top (although I am sure many people who do natural horsemanship will freak out at that comment).
