I think the theme is very beautiful, but after having a near-death experience, the thought of Death as an adversary, rather than as a Liberator, needs solving.
Could have done with a real crash of the great gong at 19:29; in some interpretations with each tap the sound shimmers thru the development of the climax - real goose-bump stuff! Try a trawl of the postings to see what I mean
Anyone who bemoans the difficulty of this piece should take heart from the effect it has on an audience. It is simply extraordinary. I heard it for the first time in Bayreuth and it reduced me to tears.
We're performing this with the Symphony I play in next weekend. The woodwinds here do a very nice job on some TOUGH parts. One of the hardest things to do is come in ppp on low notes on English Horn. This player did great!
I'm principal oboist of our orchestra and it's a lip-killer for oboe!~
Lots of LOUD, high parts, then very LONG, sustained parts on the end PPP.
oh wow. a whole recording of this tone poem! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! the brass sections a bit off at times, but who cares-this is the loveliest tone poem in the world!
I watched this so I could see how the basses would fare in this.

Used to like Don and Till better when I was younger, now I like this. Mr. Carlson is a hard working conductor.

Great performance of this awesome tone poem! It has been years since I have heard this piece in its entirety. Bravo, Mr. Carlson!

I liked it when I was young because it seemed to show the essence of the life process. How, at 80, it seems very nice. check /psisig

Its really great that you could uploaded it without having to slice it in tons of parts. It awfully ruins continuity....

@omgtkseth Yes, we are lucky to have a YouTube EDU account that gives us some more flexibility.

Yes, it really is nice. I only wish we had more full recordings to put up. Will have to set some up in the near future.
