  • Beginning of Metal gear Solid reminded me of this.

  • My Lord, you finished the entire game in 5 minutes! I remember being 10 years old and trying dozens of times just to reach the camp, the energy bar just didn't seem to last long! And don't get me started on the gunship battle at the end, stupidly difficult, you made it look so easy!

  • C64, wow i spent hours and hours on the 64 ,the good old days, Rambo,Camando,Robocop, last ninja best console ever..:-)

  • There was some cheat/bug on that helicopter. With 2 joystick, u could fly very fast, i cant remember, how i made it...

  • This game was CENSORED in Germany from 1984 to 2011, because of beeing to brutal.

In 2011 I lol at it. but like a lot of games it took them 30 years to allow them.

  • Wow, that's the ENTIRE game?

  • @mantanz - Yes, that's the entire game but believe me - this game is HARD! Alot harder than you would think just by watching this video. Took me ages to just reach the helicopter to begin with back in the day. And surviving the gunship until the end? Even playing it now I struggle at that. One VERY tough cookie this one :) :)

  • @CitroenC407 Haha, still... as a game designer I could never release something that took under five minutes to complete, no matter how hard it was! Then again... would only take a day to make. LOL. How times have changed... lol. Kinda wish it was more like the old days... who really wants to be playing a game for 80 hours+ ?!?!?!

  • @mantanz - Yeah I know what you mean! Everyone complains nowadays when a game is over in 5 hours as being "too short". I'm quite happy the older games took shorter times, though, given they all had to be loaded from tapes!

Games were much harder back then, though, too. They were shorter but took LOTS more skill to eventually finish. This game is a fine case in point. Yes it's short but that Energy bar decreases VERY fast! It took me loads of tries just to reach the camp back in the day, haha :)

  • @CitroenC407 they all had to be loaded from tapes? Maybe over in Europe over here in the states the majority of our releases were on floppy not that it made load times any faster. But your right about the old days games didn't have to be that long as they were brutally difficult I think I only finished 3 or 4 games out of the 50 or so C64 games I had as a kid, my dad got a large amount of games from a friend of his who was getting rid of his c64 for a apple ][.

  • @Evilmonkey66699 - Well you could get them on 5 inch floppys here aswell but we didn't have a disk drive with our C64 :) So sadly we were stuck with the minefield of loading from tapes... ie, you spend 10 minutes waiting for the game to load and then it crashes, haha. Still loved it, though. I'd hate to be growing up in the current generation of games... they just don't have the magic of the old titles.

  • @mantanz in a sense yes, but it's like a old atari or Arcade game it keeps looping till you run out of lives so there is no real end to the game

  • I watched the longplay and played the game on the emulator cracking game

  • LOL its short 0o

  • Did you guys know that they have remade the C64. No bull. It looks pretty dynamic.

  • rambo .. last ninja and robocop this was my best games of c64

  • I swear I just heard them playing the music to this game during a NHL hockey game on TV

  • Martin Galway had done some fantastic pieces of music on C64 games especially with Ocean loaders 1 & 2. I always loved that the C64 played music when loading a game on cassette.

  • It's funny even now when I see the guard towers I instinctively think it's an elephants head firing at Rambo

  • Beats the shit out of the NES version

  • Galway IS God

  • lol!! hes killing the bad guys with his hand on his hip!!

  • So much homework was not done in the 80's thanks to this game. That gunship always got me.

  • Nice. I finally did this a while back too after 20 years of playing...lol That's why I love the older games because the graphics might not be up to par with today's but they are hard as hell and way more fun.

  • What a bloddy suspens when you almost arrive with the low energy ... will he make it and YES. Just like when I was playing this game. Thanks for posting !!

  • w to też grałem i mam to

  • Gee, I can still remember coming home from school in 86' and playing this damn video game! I never made it through the end, though, the enemy airplane would always kick my ass! :(

  • @pierneus That helicopter would mess me up everytime too. I always tried to fight it, never occurred to me to just try to evade. It killed me everytime until I found a cheat, if you plug in the 2nd controller and push forward on the 2nd while pushing back on the 1st, your helicopter flies backwards at 2x speed and the gunship can't catch you. Man, I can't believe I remembered that!

  • @pierneus me too...

  • @pierneus OMG yes! It was back in 86, I saved the POW's (remember how u had 2 have the knife equiped to unlock the cage) I got in the chopper but the jet would kick my ass, I never figured out what to do back then.

  • @granpapi29 Yep, and the solution was easy! You just had to avoid the damn jet until you could reach your base! :)

  • I remember this music so well !

  • It's sad to see how close I was to beating this game all those years ago, but never succeeded. The gunship would kick my ass every time.

  • The C64 "at the time" had amazing sound ...Rob Hubbard was a freaking God!

Back in the day the C64 pissed all over the Spectrum and amstrad by a long mile!

  • God, I loved this game when I was a kid - it was like Commando, except you weren't runnin in just direction, and you actually had an energy bar instead of being killed with one hit.

  • @Suckfest83 You're right, I was playing both games, but I can vaguely remember commando

  • God this game was hard , but awesome

  • still f**kin' great!

  • I could never get passed the last mission... so that's how you do it.

  • omg I was like 12 playing this game it was so awesome, and I was alwys using it to piss off people owning atari, because no game on atari could beat this music, cybernoid was good for it too, huehue

  • ich habe diesen sound geliebt! jedes mal gänsehaut am anfang

  • ich habe diesen Sound geliebt

  • The intro music really reminds me of Orbital's "Dwr Budr".

    Martin Galway, what a legend.

Perhaps Orbital were inspired by him?

  • For that time this game was a masterpiece....and still is und will ever be. We cannot reproduce this feeling with our technology again. We lost the sense for the essential. Besides i am a great Stallone Fan too.

  • i m laughing my ass out, i used to have zx spectrum, and i see all u guys, just remembering good ol' days, it is F******* crazy shit !

    old time rules!

  • A shame the cool tune cuts out at the end (just prior to landing).

  • lol, my heart was pumping fast as you approached the end, well played. :-)

  • @ANation0nceAgain

There was a cheat where you could fly really fast using the helicopter. You had to have two joysticks plugged in for it though.

  • @AmidLightningWheels

HAHA ! I just remembered the same cheat. Except i kept pressing joystick UP and kept hitting keys around runstop and shift(?).

When that bug started the chopper went really fast to the end by flying backwards =). No 10 years old could have beat that enemy chopper other way LOL !

  • The music makes me want to fart lol

  • w końcu po 20 latach dowiedziałem się jak przejść tą zajebistą gierkę!!! :D jest naprawdę superrr!!! i ta czaderska muzyka!!! :D aż łezka się w oku kręci :)

  • When you're pursuited by the gunship, you can hold down Enter to fly really fast. It's cheating, but who cares...

  • @Glargl

    LOL!

    Yeah I remember that!

  • Schmu.... Du bist der beste!!!

  • the best is that you can throw the trees with a knife.. :D ntw. awesome music :P

  • this game is solid , never got this far

  • WTF!!!!!!!! I tried for hours to beat this game as a kid! When I'd land at the wall, after rescuing the POW's, Rambo would get out, and would be attacked by Vietnameese until he died.....I could not figure out what I was supposed to do to beat the game!!! I must have had some sort of buggy version.

    The days before the internet.....

  • @LambadLambadLambda

I did the same shit. WTF so pissed when I see this. The fcking wall

  • @CyberMarre

I think the problem is, that you're supposed to rescue the one guy on the cross, then go to the ship, then come back for the rest of the POWs, but it was easier to just do it at the same time. The game would let you do it at the same time, but it wouldn't register that you had rescued both.

  • i just love it !

  • Wow...that is exactly how Rambo would of done it...Nice skills.

  • i ll never forget that fucking awsome music

  • yeah me too, it´s grandmaster goldsmith´s outstanding music in all it´s c64 glory!! i could listen to this for hours...

  • @muemaccash I used to just have it (the theme) playing after a long day of gaming.

  • @muemaccash

    Yeah that tune rocked man!

It took me and my bro' a while to figure out what where the fcking pow area was on stage 2 of this game though.

  • @muemaccash Yeah, Rambo always had some memorable theme music.

  • @muemaccash 52 guys are like me..cool im not alone :)

  • your forgot to free the officer who was bounded on a woodenrack inside the camp!

  • sorry! maybe i was lightening my pipe just in that scene...

  • incredible galway yaq!

  • All this from just 64k of memory. makes you wonder it really does. Long live the 64!

  • 64kB ... and a whopping 1MHz CPU

  • Agreed! It was simply an amazing Computer and programmers back then knew just how to work with what they had. Best years of my life.

  • @Sclemtak i think only 38k was available for the actual games making it more impressive

  • Yes that is very impressive. I have started to look further now and it makes me wonder how programmers like Jeff Minter was creating games like Met-llamas and Gridrunner on the 3.5 VICs.

  • No, that was 38K for BASIC, as in "38911 Basic Bytes free."

There was an entire 64K available for programs, you could switch the ROM out to access the ram underneath, POKE (write) the ram underneath the I/O ports and all sorts - it had a true 64K unlike its contemporaries. A fantastic machine for its day.

  • wow, that was short. I wonder why they changed the formula so much for the sms game, this action adventure approach would've been pretty cool.

  • does anyone remember the C-64 version of the "V" series? the stages where inside the mothership and Donovan had to make it to the shore

  • @peluchetaiwanes Yes i do! It was quite hard. The Animation of Donovan was pretty good indeed.

  • yes, the animation was out of this world for 1985! and you had to decode an extraterrestrial alphabet to access new stages, right? do you know where can we find that game on youtube?

  • That is exactly right!, sadly I too have been searching for ages for a video of "V" the game. I can still play it on 64 but would have loved to watch a walkthrough video of it.

  • this was 1st game woot i loaded with my C64. It have with Hollywood Collection played manytimes it and passed... C= 4va

  • man the graphics were so awesome to me at that time...

still amazing game...games nowadays cant beat the feeling from playing this!!!

  • Is THAT the whole darn game???I had this when it came out and never got past the heli part.

  • I'm 29 years old and still got this game, had a quick go on it a few weeks ago for the memories, as a few people have already said, the music is top quality ;-)

  • AHhhhhhhhhhh!

I never could win this game, it kept telling me that I didn't rescue the POWs. I see now why, they were hiding in the wiry wall thingy.

  • Great video. I remember playing this game some 20 years ago. I got to the helicopter boss, but never managed to get to the landing site. This video brought back fond memories.

  • Great music!

  • amen to that

  • I loved this game so much. I was good at it as a kid and completed it regularly, but when I first downloaded a C64 emulator I completed it 8 TIMES IN A ROW without dying once. Times change... I also remember discovering a really odd quirk using another joystick that doubled the speed of my helecopter! The gunship couldn't catch me!

  • Such good memories! And that music kicked ass.

  • I played this game 20 years ago or something ... :-) ... I remember I got to the boss in the helicopter,

but I think I did not manage to to get to the landingsite ... but the music is still great :-)

  • John Rambo does not like ecology, he destroyed a lot of trees during his mission. :)

  • I did this game ONCE when I was a kid (about 6). I had a different approach to the first mission, by using only my knife and sneaking around the top of the base and in through gaps in the trees. Hours of fun... well 20 minutes

  • Now THAT was close at the end! Phew!

  • Ok.. I have to put in my two cents about this game because it's such a dominant memory of my childhood... hehe

I was 8 years old.... and made it to the helicoptor stage and couldn't figure out how to get any further... but get this.. I survived that damn helicoptor for 10 minutes thinking it would just go away! :))))

By for me... being musically inclined.. I would load this game up and listen to the opening score for HOURS... if you listen close it sounds like "The Fly".

  • I remember this cool game, ZajSnoshaj, and that helicopter part I could never get through, either, but I found you could plug in two joysticks and hold up and down between them and you would outrun it to the camp!

  • And people complain that todays games are short in playtime. :P

  • It probably took longer than that to load back in the day!

  • I once played this 9 times through with that one life :)

  • haha I remember this one, was a cool game- only I never got to the finish cause I made the mistake to always fight that enemy heli...thanks for showing me (*finally*)...

  • super cool thank you for posting. the good old days when i was a kid and the world seemed to be cool.

  • Ow yes.

    This is very good game.

    Shit,very short...

  • Wish I that good. Memories of the good old specky. Thanks for posting.

  • The cheat at the gunship part was to push "up" on the 2nd joystick, which made ur heli fly straight passed :)

  • yes!

  • Two Joysticks?

    Pretty feckin bourgeois mate. :)

£10 i paid for that game that must be like £60 in todays money.

  • I loved playin this back in the day. Long live the C-64!

  • that's music of the mind!!!!

  • I loved this game as a kid! :)

    Ahhh... the music is legendary!

  • omg play´d this till the score came out in letters:)

  • well done

  • Ocean Software ruled the 80s for C4 games! lol

  • "C64"

  • Well, as a kid, I used to play a lot with this. However I never reached the end.

  • same, the heli always got me

  • this game was awesome and I played the hell out of it when I was a kid. The music is awesome and is one of the best parts of the game. I could never pass the gunship at the end.

What a crappy ending you get for your troubles...

  • what sort of cunt ending is that

  • Great game, I also loved this as a kid. I thought you'd die at the end there but you made it with the tiniest bit of energy left! Anyone else remember the cheat of using two joysticks to fly the chopper at ultra-fast speed? That's the only way I could complete it. Haha.

  • This must've been the first game to have destructible enviroments :) Good memories to this game.

  • I fuckin loved that game.

  • god, i almost cried when i saw this. one of my favorite games ever. must have put over a thousand hours into it as a kid. and that MUSIC -- damn, it's so rousing and heroic and awesome.

  • n the same year maby one year earlier or later was coming another War Shooter for the C-64 out.

I remember there was a digital Voice output in this game. If you shoot on a soldier the Voice says loud: "OH MY HEAD!!!!". Does anybody know the name of this forbidden game? ???????????

  • damn ,how many knives does rambo have there?

  • all of them

  • I feel like dr who looking at this, god this takes me back to my old skool days like about 25 years, I remember playing this for hours on end stuck up in my little old bedroom just pounding away on that old quickshot joystick, those were the days, just wish that I could go back now to them great times, oh well lives a funny old game.

  • lmao me too i used to love skooldaze too and back2skool. remeber them?

  • Ah skooldaze was very good my friend as well, there were so many great games back in the day for these computers that I feel that I spent my youth stuck up in my bedroom bashing away on the old keyboard and the old quick shot joystick for what seemed like months on end

  • I found "Green Beret" harder than this but Rambo II was more fun.

  • lol it even has destructable enviroments

  • This is not the end of the game. You know how it says u must now return to get more unfortnate soldiers trapped by enemy forces. You go back an repeat rescueing the hostages and bringing them back if you do it enough times you can get out of your helcopter at the far side h. What u do after that I don't know I didn't know where to go and eventually got killed.

  • Wow!!! I played with this game about 22/23 years ago!!! It was one of my favourite... incredible... i love the music, i still love!! Thank you...

  • This game really frustrated me back in the day- glad to see how it ended over 20 yrs. on...

I love how the chopper can only make 90 degree turns!

  • its a bit like 'the ninja' on sega master system

  • Really . . this sort of stuff makes me feel old. Lol

  • god the music is so damn good ...gotta love the sid

  • It sounds like the Good the bad and the ugly.

  • Best music on C64 ever! Thanks, Martin!

  • I love the way DerSchmu lets the title music run on at the start of his gameplay vids!

Very thoughtful for sid fanatics like myself!

  • Too bad he stops it just when the Rambo title tune gets good..

  • man i used to love this game!! cheat at the end helicopter level by pressing the spacebar!!

  • your reactions have to be soo quick on the old nes games! thats the thing the new games dont have which makes them less fun and too easy!

  • yeah!!! c-64 rules - too bad that you play so fast so we dont hear the great music to the end

  • Thanx 4 that. Just like yesterday!!! Glad ya kept the music aswell. My kids dont belive that their father played such a "simple" game.... Bet their kids will be saying the same :-)

  • lol Brings back memories, me and my bro used to beat the gunship by holding down shidt and return if i remember correctly, used to turbo the chopper so he couldnt catch you. great fun

  • i prefer Rambo III Genesis/Mega-Drive

  • Finally..... 23 years after last attempt I get to see the helicopter land :-)

Magnificent music, remembered it perfectly though :-)

  • It was all right, but no classic. Not in the league of Commando or Green Beret.

Music is still in my head though, after all these years.

  • i remember getting so many points on this game that the counter went back round to zero fucking awesome game

  • I dunno, I found Commando harder than this, at least you had an energy bar here so could absorb a few shots before dying. Still it does get pretty tough.

    Superb and memorable tunes. 8)

  • I had a POKE cheat where the energy didn't deplete when hit, it made the game more bearable instead of frustrating. :)

  • haha, oh man, that music. it sticks in your head.

classic times, I always got blown out of the sky by that gunship...

  • I'm pissed off. I must have had a buggy version of the software, because when I got to the end of the game, there was just a big wall. I'd land, and all the vietnameeze would shoot me till I died. I was baffled as a kid, as to how to beat this game.

  • It's totally not in the spirit of Rambo to not fight the Gunship, lol. I like how he avoided using guns too.

That said I think this game was 1000x harder than Commando, I never even got close to beating it.

Still if the actual movie ended like this, it would have been hilarious, more so than the film was in the end. "Good job Rambo!! You saved 10 people, now go back and save more!"

  • this game.....was hard. dam my childhood, dam it to hell!

  • You mean you cant blow that gunship up? Gee, thats like 50 hours of wasted time... LOL!!! I never did finish that game because of that!

    ARGH!!!

  • my all time favorit :)

  • Gone are the days when you can complete a game in four minutes!

  • the music is / was always the thing that will stick with me regarding this game. I met martin Galway years ago at a computer show, people go on about hubbard all the time.. but tim follin / martin galway / jereon tel did great things. plenty more I could list.. =)

  • Now that game had so great music, just like so many other old C64 game did. And it was damn hard just like all the other games were back then :) I posted the rambo tunes if you wish to hear them fully. ;)

  • Cant get enough of that SID chip. I loved this game, even though I sucked ass at it. Of course, I was only about six at the time.

  • brings back lots of memories.. :) I always thought that turbo was more like specification than cheat back then. it was something like you had to keep RETURN-key pressed down and chopper flew super fast, and mi-24 never had a chance.

    :D

  • Lol I remember this game.. Great sound and graphics but very Easy. But I never could use the bow. Does anyone know how to use the bow?!

  • I never thought of just continuing to fly to outrun the gunship. I always tried to fight it and lost. It's a little sad to think how many hours I sank into that game and never won - and to think it can all be done in 4 minutes. Sigh...thanks for the memories.

  • haha I would always try and fight the gunship as well. C64 games were brutal.

  • I didn't know what to do after flying back to the POW camp. I leveled every building with grenades and never found the stupid prisoners -- it never occurred to me to use the knife on the one that wouldn't blow up.

  • This game was hard as hell. Victor Charlie coming at you from every direction, bullets everywhere, and you had to constantly switch weapons to get past various obstacles. I love the fact that rather walk under the canopy of the trees, Rambo has to blow the entire tree away with rockets to get past.

  • push space 4 knife throw the good old days -.-

  • Havent played since 1988. Very nice post.

  • That sound in the beginning must affect somehow in ur brains

  • Jesus, I haven't played this game since around 1995! Ah the memories!
