In response to Dr. John Copenhaver's comment, I experienced this media blackout first hand when I marched with Code Pink with hundreds of others protesting Bush's second term and not one mainstream media organization covered the protest.

What no one talks about is the mainstream media's decision (broadcast and print) not to cover dissent and the mass demonstrations against the war. I speak with people who have no idea there was any opposition to the war. Demonstrations of hundreds of thousands of people would get a half column on page 20 of the Post, which of course endorsed the war.
