  • cold in there or what?

  • does the Damp affect the taste of JD or any other drinks you reviewed?

  • Ralfy do you classify JD more as a Bourbon or a Whisky?

  • @rab631 JD is Tennessee whisky not bourbon, bourbon whisky must be distilled in Bourbon Kentucky and follow another sort of rules almost like the ones that tennessee whisky follow, they're very alike but not the same and JD its clearly not bourbon

  • @hughiewalker That is false, A bourbon has to be made in the US and be at least 51% corn, and usually made with Rye as well.

  • @jfgjr2 sorry i got my info wrong!

  • @hughiewalker JD is a Bourbon they Just called Whisky to be differant and as a marketing thing look it up

I was asking Ralfy not at you it is ok if you reply but maybe next time let ralfy post replys for comments that are for him

  • @rab631

    Love & Peace guys !

  • @ralfystuff Do not worry we are not have a fight it's just my opinion the JD is not a Whisky feels more like a Bourbon to me

  • @rab631 sorry to bother you, but still Jack Daniels isn't bourbon, it's a Tennessee Whiskey. Jack Daniel's is dripped slowly - drop-by-drop - through ten feet of firmly packed charcoal (made from hard sugar maple) before going into new charred oak barrels for aging. This special process gives Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey its rare smoothness. It's this extra step - charcoal mellowing – that makes Jack Daniel's a Tennessee Whiskey.

  • Yee ugg yuck, I had a shot of jack it was like drinking broken glass, much perfer scotch, or william henry harrison bourbon, its not too bad, its a bit less bitter then jack, of course harrison is from indiana and uses indiana oak to age it, mind you I am from indiana but I think its better tasting.

  • @manga12 I don't know why, but I can't get enough of Jack. I drink that stuff so much I love it!

  • you can drink it all you wish, if it is something your tastebuds like more power to you, its all a matter of personal taste like wine, beer, cigars, or tea.

    I just dont like jack

  • @manga12 Thanks and I know what you mean, I am the only one in my friend group who likes it. In fact simply the smell of it on my breath makes some of my lady friends want to hurl, so I try to not burp around them when I am drinking it.

I am curious though, have you ever had Royal Reserve or Alberta Premium? I am trying to figure out others whisky tastes, I hear Alberta Premium is fantastic but tastes a bit like R&R, which I just can't stand.

  • I knew that jack daniels is overpriced piece of crap.

  • for a good bourbon I suggest a Makers Mark...Kentucky Straight Bourbon

  • JD Single Barrel the only from JD range that is drinkable in my book

  • lol, frappleberries 0_o

  • how cold is it in that room? i can see ur breath

  • Thats what im sippin and im 14

  • Have you reviewed any of the Glenlivet products?

  • @ls033189

    yes, Nadurra.

  • I really do enjoy JD Single Barrel - different league than Gent Jack. Spend the extra $ if you want a sipper!

  • You seem cold there ralfy old boy !

  • Would love to hear your opinion on VIrginia Gentleman Borboun. I have never found any bourbon as smooth and rich as it

  • I wish it was cheaper so I can drink more often.

  • Jack Daniel's used to be well known for a strange "banana" note in the nose (akin to that perfume nose that appeared in a number of old Bowmores). However this hasn't appeared in a recent Single Barrel I've opened suggesting that someone fixed whatever was causing it.

  • When I open Gentleman Jack, it also smelt tons of glue, it needs to oxidize a little bit, very rough when opened and consumed directly!

  • @fuckinick i opened my bottle and thought it smelt only of glue and i would rather drink normal jack. I thought i got a bad bottle but ill let it oxidise. Thanks

  • @rorstergnr Hi, just taken another siff today, it had lots and lots of caramel in the smell (the bottle is 1/3 full now) but underneath, there is still a little notes of glue. For the similar amount of money, I would run for Glenfiddich 15 yo solera reserve for sure next time, which is a butt kicker!

  • @rorstergnr Meh, I tasted it again, tons of glue....

Wrote a complaint to replace it with a single barrel. They did it so right away...

  • hilarious and spot on

  • Mentioning dr who you are now a billion time greater

  • Old number 7 is a great whiskey for winter or after a rough day. Very warm sweet flavor. I'm sure there are better ones out there but just a personal favorite. Good review though mate. Never had gentalmen Jack before probably won't after your review.

  • ...furthermore, for the same money, you can have sooooo much better!

  • I do not consider Jack a whiskey either....a bourbon equal to turpentine is appropriate!

  • Happy to see this review. I hate going into get a bottle of Whiskey and seeing people crowded around the Jack Daniels. I only use Jack No. 7 to remove paint from objects I want to repaint.

    Thanks Ralfy,

  • Just bought this the flavor to me is sweet and warm great to drink during the winter

  • as an april fools prank whiskey review you should do a review on Moonshine, either apple pie shine or whitelightening.

  • @hammerofgod85

Ralfy has mentioned Georgia Moon before. That stuff is, well, an interesting experience...

  • @shuboy05 i know I'm from Alabama and I usually get my shine out of GA or KY and both will put hair on places you'd never think hair would grow. You are right it is an interesting experience thats for sure. You aint careful the creature will get you and put you into submission lickity split lol

  • @hammerofgod85

I have a sneaking suspicion Heaven Hill only makes Georgia Moon just to give customers the novelty of trying something close to moonshine... Incidentally HH also ages their corn whiskey for a product called Mellow Corn. I would love to try that but it's not available in my state.

  • Yup, Jack Daniels when you don't give a shit on a Saturday night...

  • Come from a biker family and for some reason......Motorcycles and Jack Daniels go hand in hand.........for me though.....I think JD has an extremely cheap and harsh taste like Hairspray or Gasoline.......it is for shots and thats about all its good for....I have tried many times to drink it casually and is just impossible to drink NEAT......I have added water almost 50/50 to tolerate it.......I personally drink Johnnie Walker Green Label......you can have it any way you like and WITHOUT gagging!

  • @chrisboehler People confuse strong with cheap....just because it makes you cringe and gag does not mean it is a MANLY whiskey......good whiskey isnt cheap and you actually CAN enjoy it. Prefer spending the money on good quality whiskey........I recommend Johnnie Walker Green Label.......DO NOT buy the Red Label or Black Label...it is NOT the same and the price reflects this......Drink The Green Label and throw out that nasty JD once and for all!!

  • would love to know your opinion of Buffalo Trace...

  • @Hamporkcheese

    whisky review 161

  • @ralfystuff i have to say, your accent makes the review more enjoyable ;P

  • I've never been a gentleman after two or three glasses... what.... you drink when I tell you... sorry. I don't handle my whiskey so calmly...

  • Just out of curiosity but would Gentleman Jack have gotten higher marks if it were higher proof? I keep thinking Gentleman Jack should be at least 90 proof to differentiate a bit more from the basic bottling

  • Just subscribed!...love the review..and the amount of research and effort involved..great stuff thank you!

  • this is made about 3.5 hours from where I live, but I'm not a huge fan of No. 7. a little harsh, or sharp as you said. haven't tried the other versions but have heard the Gentleman Jack is good.

  • Jack Daniels old No7 is OK, if it tastes good in my mouth it´s a good whisky, other peoples opinions don´t effect on me. Snobby irish or scottish single malt whisky dont impress me much. My moutht is My judge of whiskey, JD Rules :-)

  • Just found your most excellent channel! I grew up sipping my Dad's Scotches. I really didn't like them then, just curious I guess but I love them now. Just bought a bottle of 18 Year The Glenlivet and I have to say I am a bit disappointed. I wanted to love it but I was expecting more. I have a bottle of the Nadura which I think I favor over the 18 YR. I also really enjoy J.D. single barrel. Very flavorful, especially for the price! Thanks for the great info!!!

  • @ 0:15- I make the same face when i just lay eyes on a bottle of old No.7, airfix glue is a good tasting note for it!!.

i tried Gentleman jack on a dare years ago and i was very surprised at how good it is, i will have to give single barrel a try if or when i want to stray from my Buffalo Trace and Woodford Reserve.

  • youre like morgan freeman i love just listening you talk about whisky

    fellow whisky quaffer

  • I've recently tried Maker's Mark, and Elijah Craig 12yo, and Wild Turkey. They all have a distinctive bitter varnished table taste to them. I assume this is something to do with being aged in white oak? I did like the Elijah Craig, but that bitter leathery varnishy solvent quality may have put me off of bourbon altogether.

  • "Nose"... I always get a little bit excited when we get to this part of the review - it's like, right, now we're getting down to business!

I've just recently started to take a proper interest in whiskey, although I have been drinking JD No.7 for years. I've bought JW Green label, and Jura in the last few weeks. The 3 are completely different, but I'd be hard pushed to say which I prefer. They're just different, but I like them all.

Love your reviews - entertaining and informative :-)

  • Jack Daniels is like firewater with a golden syrup taste, its okay for mixing but im not really into it anymore as for something sweet i just find rum has more accompanying flavours.

  • gentlmen jack tast watery i think

  • Hi Ralfy! I live in America. If there are frappleberries around here, I haven't seen any. But keep up the good work.

  • Have you reviewed Walker Green 15 years?

  • @toledosan

    WhiskyReview 112

  • love your reviews, im a big fan on gentleman jack not so much no7... i just wondered have you ever reviewed or what you thought of the jack daniels single barrel or silver select

  • @winston0024

Single Barrel is your best quality option with JD

  • did you know Old No: 7 is aged 6 years

  • @JoshuaStrader You know how you can pretty much drink anything when you're drunk? Well, if Im drunk and you were to give me a shot of jack I would immediately puke on you without any hesitation. Then you'd probably get punched for tricking me into drinking that swill. The same goes for captain morgan. I'll put a little captain in ya.

  • Aye ,in honour of Scotland ,great vids..I am no critical sipper by any means but Jack's No.7 has changed sometime in the last 10 years ..I noticed that it is 80 Proof now,it use to be 90 Proof and I think that changed it for the worst..Never tried Gentelman Jack, but as you say JD No 7 is very young and harsh drink but good for a moderately cheap whiskey..Very popular anyways so it has something going for it I reckon..

  • @CrashMarket

If I had to guess I'd say Old No. 7 used to have older whiskey too.

  • @shuboy05 I think so too because JD has became wildly popular..

  • @CrashMarket

Incidentally I haven't tasted old bottles of JD (but if I could find a dusty somewhere I'd definitely pick one up). I actually based my theory on Ralfy's comment that when demand is low, the whiskey tends to be better because the distillery is increasing the quality to bring back the demand (and they would have older supplies available).

  • i been to scotland there wiskey is better but jack will do the job if you know what i mean!!!!

  • nice.

  • Jesus.. the noise your mouth makes at 0:26.. wtf..

  • I live in College Grove, TN right above Lynchburg, TN where No. 7 is made

  • @TennVol92 good for you.

  • I get a big cherry note on the palatte from this whiskey

  • i just bought a jonnie walker black label, a jack daniels gentleman, i wanted to know if i can keep them unopened for a year and then open it and drink it?

  • @MrChannel5news

you could keep them 100 years then drink them, ... so no problem.

  • @ralfystuff, iam a newbie, what whiskey would you recommend i start with?

  • @tusharbagla93

Elijah Craig 12yo and Glenlivet 12yo, then take it from there !

  • Vodka is so much better

  • @ilovemesomechicken Sounds like something a chick would say.

  • @cohi27 Or a Russian

  • Why do people put water in whisky all the time I've tried whisky a few times straight and I'm only fourteen, what's the need for water ?

  • @JustinZ80Z

    your welcome !

  • i have to say i really enjoy your reviews, i'm only 15 but my mum owns a wine bar that sells a wide variety of scotish speyside whiskys and i love to go in and sample them, infact i usually taste the whisky before it goes into the bar because i know my stuff :)

  • @wiltshiredubstep

excellent stuff matey ! ... but don't get drunk on it 'cos it's seriously not-cool. Smell the sophistocation !

  • @ralfystuff i hate the feeling of being drunk :) and i only have a small glass every now and then, as a treat :D

  • honestly, i just like hearing your accent hahaha.

  • Jack daniels isnt real whiskey, i have no problem with it though you need to go to scotland to proper good whiskey

  • You are missing a point about Gentleman Jack. It is less aged than Old No. 7. Gentleman Jack is basically Green Label Jack Daniels that has been run through the charcoal filter twice in order to make it more smooth.

I don't agree with your glue nose of Old No. 7, if my glue smelled like Old No. 7. I would be hooked on glue sniffing by now.

There is a definition difference between Tennessee and Bourbon Whiskey they are closely related and only really differ in the charcoal filter.

  • With any version of Jack Daniels, you're paying more for the name. Try a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel...much better whiskey at a much better price.

  • Jack Daniels is not a Whiskey to enjoy...Its OK to mix with Coke and to get drunken fast..hahaha..Ahh...terrible stuff...

  • What's your opinion on the Single Barrel Select? I stumbled upon a good deal for a liter and I think it's alright. It's a lot hotter on the tongue than what I'm used to with bourbons.

  • @DrScotchDrinker

... generally JD Single barrel offerings are good, but need some water and time in the glass to soften the 'heat'.

  • wow it must be freezing in your house dude i could see your breath when u talk...that whiskey will warm u up!!

  • Mr. Ralfy, even though i don't watch Dr. who????? I still appreciate the frapple* berries, and even though i would never find anything better than Tequila corralejo reposado, my favorite regular drink is a good old Gentleman jack. I still look foward in learning more from your videos.

    Ps. greetings from Mexico :)

  • @kokemon07

... thanks ! .... some Tequila reviews later in the year.

  • Just bought a bottle of Gentleman Jack thanks to this review. I love it. Very tasty. They should be paying you Ralfy :)

  • Hey Raffy im new to Whisky Drinking i was wondering do you use ur Glencairn glass for drinking the whisky all the time, or just when ur tasting it for a review?

  • @ZAVEUSZBC

    all the time !

  • @ralfystuff Thanks man, and u never fill it up to the top right?, just about a quarter of the way just to sip it

  • it good and it does the job lol!!

  • tastes of jelly babies? ill leave it then i only like my whiskey tasting of chicken and spicy beef mmm

  • what the heck are frappleberries

  • @shizoid123 ... A Frapple berry is a berry frappe smoothie made with strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, so the 'frappleberry' referers to a black berry flavour hybrid with acetone notes.

  • Do you review/drink any bourbons?

  • @snizshizzle

    WhiskyReviews 155 to 165

  • Now Ralfy, I've had as much whisky as you (scotch or otherwise). Nothing better than a review with a little sniffer action. However, when it comes to Old #7, set aside the sniffer and cannonball the oil strait from the bottle. Don't be too proud not to do it, because Jack Daniel's is best strait from the bottle. Take a dip and it's even better. If you don't like that, then don't drink it. Simple as that.

  • Nice job Ralfy.

  • Good Review and totally agree with most points, however.

I find Gentleman Jack much better than any Jim Beams, perhaps this is just a personal taste but yeah....

  • Thank you for this review. I have been wanting to get into microbrewing for years! Im 26 and just love so much random stuff to do with alcohol. Most people in America dont understand but your reviews sum it up!

  • Having samplet quite a different variety of whisky now, I came across this and tought I could give it a try. Comparing to the standard jack d its better, but in my opinion, it should still be used for mixing I dont like drinking it neat, maybe some ice cubes.

  • By "airfix glue" do you mean acetone? I find vimto to taste predominantly of black hamburg grape, without the parma-violet finish when they're at their optimum.

  • @TheBeebopper

Acetone is included, but there is more, rubber, aldehyde, solvent, plastic e.t.c.

  • @ralfystuff

This smells exactly like a polystyrene model airplane -- something I haven't dealt with in a long time. It's not quite the glue; it's the plastic.

Seems unhealthy like drinking a random solvent from organic chem lab. I miss the sugar maple entirely.

Even with my "fondness" for original JD, I still want to try Gentleman Jack.

    Another great spot-on review.

  • I don't care what you say, JD ole' number 7 is still one of the best sipping whiskey's there is. I think it's made for people that don't have the time or desire to sit around smelling their whiskey and talking about it....

  • I usually don't get a glue aroma from bourbon but I do get it from Booker's.

  • In my humble opinion, (and i must say humble as im sure im not as experienced as some others are but still have tasted a lot of whiskey and bourbon) Jack can be in the running for the title of best whiskey ever made. I am from Tennessee so that is slightly bias but still.

  • whhyiee

  • the fuck is frappleberry

  • Jack is not a bourbon, it is a Tennessee whiskey.

  • Hahaha

    You are becoming a snob!

When you taste the whisky you make the same sound as Richard Paterson does!!

Do you too throw out your whisky on the carpet? hehe

    Your the best Ralfy

    Merry Christmas to you.

    Lars

  • @gummybearkiller1 me a malt-snob Lars, .... N E V E R !

  • Hi, what is that symbol with the 3 running legs on your wall? In the Philippines that is the symbol for the fraternity Tau Gamma Phi...

  • @corismsyn

... it is the Three Legs of Mann, the symbol of the Isle of Man Flag.

    It is called the Triskelion.

    (wikipediadotorg/wiki/Triskelion)

  • Surprised to see you doing an American whisky(bourbon), would you consider doing Crown Royal?

  • @dk2853

... considering it for next year !

  • Ralfy do you really think that GJ is a step up compared to N7? I mean it is but for the price... I think GJ is what regular jack is supposed to taste like. I had two free bottles of GJ and to be honest I gave them away, they were that bad. I think you are being a bit generous in this review. Single barrel on the other hand is excellent. If you haven't tried that, you absolutely should!!

  • @z32na

... my purchase of GJ was good enough to review but I have heard now from quite a few folk that standards vary with JD and that unfortunately the single barrel can be good or less-good.

  • @ralfystuff you know thats funny that you've mentioned that because I had a few customers come in and say that about single barrel. They've been changing the labels/bottles and customers always ask for the old one. Its still a mystery to me why it would taste different tho.

  • @z32na because every barrel is different. i bought a single barrel and was hugely impressed with it. i ran the next day to the shop and the other 2 they had from the same barrel. i have not encountered a bad single barrel yet. i have tasted and sampled it from 4 different barrels. sure some are better than others but i found in my little experience with this bottle that they have a certain concistency in quality.

thats the whole exciting thing with single cask bottlings, search for THE one!!

  • wow, he's inside and you can still see his breath. COLD!

  • N# 7, ineresting history, i've read about it in Hugh Hefner's magazine (dutch version) in august/september 2008.

Rare is overused for sure, glenn Taloch uses "old and rare" , while it's widely availeble.

But Ralphy, one of the more rare bottle's i encountered was an indian whiskey, ever had a zip one of that?

  • @Menn019

... one of the best Indian whiskies is Amrut, .... whilst India produces many, varied Whiskies.

For me 'rare' is anything from Brora Distillery.

  • @ralfystuff Brora distillery? Lol! That one is closed, remaining bottle's must cost a fortune i think ;-)

Amrut? Funny, i just checked that old videoresponse from me to Dotsirammi, i was zipping and opiniating that one as hobbyist =)

  • You were really struggling there to say something nice about old #7. A lot of the critics give #7 the pan, but just like you they agree that the Gentleman is a step up.

  • Point of correction, "Tennessee whisky", yes, but "bourbon", no. Otherwise, carry on.

  • @UisgE3

... following some 'U.S. research' I notice there seems to be a big divide over whether Tennessee Whiskey/Whisky is, or is not a Bourbon.

It certainly has a very similar heritage/production profile to Bourbon, so as a Euro-perspective, I am, for the moment, regarding J.D. and Dickel as a Tennessee Whiskey Bourbon.

... the 'Tennessee Whiskey' title will of course come first. .... that's the Tennessee Perogative.

  • seeing as you're doing american spirits, will you be doing japanese spirits?

  • @adrianwvu

    ... some ! ... next year.

  • @ralfystuff Japanese spirits, overpriced?

  • Ralfy do your marks relate to all products or just comparing to the other bourbons? Simply because I have noticed they are scoring higher than most of your scotches .

  • @Futre4

When I review, marks are segregated to emphasise that they are reviewed in context to other Spirits, ... as Tequila, Bourbon, Rum and Whisky are intrinsically different to each other and need to be appreciated in that light.

Marks are not generally higher than Scotch because I was careful to buy good stuff 'cos it's my money that pays for it, .... I don't solicit sponsorship of cash or 'samples' from the Distillers.

... it helps me keep Independent.

    ... yippee !

  • @ralfystuff Ok Ralfy iss :) , and yeh I suppose you did pick more high end bourbons also.

  • I have one of those music boxes too! Bought straight from San Fran.

  • @inuyashaspet

    ... cheap and tuneful !!!

  • another great review. thanks

  • hey ralfy, have you tried chocolate jelly babies? They are a fine tasting note for Abelour Abunadh ha ha

  • @jlim2397

... how about bourbon babies ! rum babies, whisky babies ... but no drunk babies !!

  • Ralfy is the best!

  • Thanks for another well done review ralfy! I actually have enjoyed a Jack 7 now and then and most likely with some ice although I let the cubes completely melt in the glass in order to swirl the cooler/melted water properly into the whisky before sipping it.. Still as a young and "mass produced" product I really tend to think that it should be even cheaper then what it is here in scandinavia (almost 30 euros for a 700 ml bottle). I might try some of the other "variations" of Jacky D some day.

  • @Velodynamic Well I would guess that your tax on alcohol is just incredibly high .... recently I have been able to buy ome nr. 7 for 14,6 euros.

  • According to Wikipedia (and we can all vouch for its accuracy), Jasper "Jack" Daniel is of both Welsh (on his grandfather's side) and Scottish (on his grandmother's side) descent (actually English, Welsh, Scots-Irish, and Scottish). So I guess we still have the Scots (and the English, Welsh, and Irish) to thank for having a hand in crafting American whiskey.

  • Ralfy Your being kind to do the american whiskys [ I always did wonder what you thought of them] Its hard to beat a fine scottish or Irish whisky! Is it cold in your new bothy? I can see your breath from time to time. the malt muky muck from minnesota

  • Ralfy, I do believe you mean The Doctor. Doctor Who is just the show title and running gag since no one knows his name.

Anyway, I do have to agree that the Old No. 7 goes great with Cola but not something to sip on its own.

  • @shuboy05

... having shared finest single Malts with the Doctor (who I'm privileged to call Whooy-matey) on several occasions I am allowed certain liberties !!!

.... getting dragged between dimensions after a few malties is one weird 'happening' by the way !

... Sontarans cannot cope with Whisky .

  • @ralfystuff

Just don't invite the Daleks, I'm not letting their sucker arm anywhere near my whiskey.

Anyway, since I can't seem to purchase jelly babies here in the US, would gummi bears be a close approximation to the smell you're getting?

  • @shuboy05

gummi bears are the same but different !

  • Awesome..!!agree with you.. "glue.".and my opinion it taste inseed oil too;) but still sometimes I wanna drink it!!;D

  • 5/5 drinks for you,good vid,cheers!

  • Been there.....done that......wont ever buy another. Just didnt do it for me. Good review though. My advice-buy elijah criag/knobby

  • I almost grabbed a bottle of GJ yesterday at the store but opted for a replacement Knob Creek. I'm looking forward to trying GJ though!

  • ralfy please show us around ur new home does it have a garden like ur previous home

  • @HAUTRAWD why? ....stalker....lol

  • @HAUTRAWD

    no and yes !
