  • Sonic Youth is one of the greatest bands ever! This song prove my point why!

  • 19 dislikes = 19 diabetic fools

  • The video that got me into Sonic Youth. What a journey I've had... So far.

  • one of the best songs ever written

  • Extraordinary !!!!!!!

  • Geez I've bopped around my living room to this band for nearly 30 yrs!! NO ..surely that can't be correct..lolol..holy fu** !! I'm old :(.lol

  • I've still got this on VHS but the tape got infected with skunk-fungus and so I can't play the fecker anymore man. :(

    Thanks for uploading.

    Oh the memories ...

    :D

  • @ceespuke just to cheer you up, it's 19 years now you old fart!

  • @EatingABombs

some of kim's songs are good. but most are annoying.

  • Why is that it seems that the members of this band hardly age at all.

  • Sonic Youth was ahead of their time.

  • Lee is superb at guitar

  • I remember this was played on mainstream UK radio, bout the same time as Teen Spirit. Couldnae fuckin believe it. Also couldnae believe seein them in the Barras, but I was, very, very, very fucked oot ma face.... :-)

  • 2:40 begin the best part :D

  • IS MY FAVOURITE SONG. HOPE TO SEE THEM ONE DAY IN SUNNY GREECE!

  • Wow!, why dont he just sing more; & she focus more on bass, lol.

  • @EatingABombs Because some songs call for Kim to sing and some for Thurston. I thought it was pretty self explanatory. Can you imagine Thurston singing Kool Thing or Tunic?

  • @willrichtor lol, good point! Sorry. that cameout all wronge. :)

  • lee can be so creepy looking sometimes.

  • I <3 kim

  • How is it in 18 (going on 19) years all thurston moore has done is get crows feet, yet Lee Ronaldo (spelt wrong prob) has turned into a distinguished old gentlemen?

  • believe.

  • the one

  • Sonic Youth, Pavement, Fugazi and Dinosaur Jr. They don't make bands like that these days.

  • can't beat these cats for KOOL

  • One of the greatest bands ever!! Steve Shelley you are the shit!

  • Amazing performance!!!

  • oh my holy holy 90's!!!

  • @rocknruelps agreed

  • @TheLowermen dumbass

  • @kidmud999 agreed

  • @rocknruelps you know what else is boring? my foot in your ass. (yes i watch that 70s show.) this song is great

  • Comment removed

  • @kidmud999 there's more musical knowledge in my sphincter than in your whole body, sweetheart.

  • @rocknruelps ----->you have pimples on your boring...........elbow

  • I seen them for this album back then! They are incredible live! Seen them on lallapalooza probably around 1994!

  • What can you say about it? Awesome.

  • Thumbs up if looking at Kim Gordon gave you a stiffy in the 90's ;-)

  • @steffanwunderink It still does today!

  • Orgasmic music !!!

  • coolest band ever!

  • Damn he looks so young and he was 32 there!!

  • i've never noticed it before this video, but steve shelly is up there with jimmy chamberlin and matt cameron

  • this is Grunge! :)

  • Sugar Kane...makes me think of Mauii...Alohaaaa marin.

  • they're sooo good. :)

  • kim and thurston both look particularly sexy in this vid

  • Great! I like Thurston's voice here--it reminds of his vocals on Murray Street where his voice is "tender". It's an interesting addition to SY's juxtaposition of melody hooks and noise served a lush pillow of (dis)harmony.

  • I had a dream, where I walked into a music/guitar shop to get out of the rain, and Sonic Youth was there. Thurston told me to pick up a guitar and he started playing the intro to this song. I timidly tried to play along with him. Felt very real and intimidating. This was a couple years ago, and I've always remembered it as if I just woke up from the dream.

ps I just realized the "rain" reference in the song. Can't believe I didn't pick up on that before.

  • @CaptainPillowMusic kinda gay

  • @Vladthedruid Why so angry, silly?

  • @CaptainPillowMusic not angry in the slightest. But that anecdote was kinda gay

  • @Vladthedruid Hmmm, you might wanna re-examine that. Most people I know who call other people gay are themselves, gay. I also didn't know homophobes listend to Sonic Youth. Guess you can't expect everyone to get the point.

  • @CaptainPillowMusic Yeah i am a massive queer i munch on cock like hot dogs

  • @CaptainPillowMusic oh your right i much on cock like a salty hotdog

  • @CaptainPillowMusic Maybe your subconcious did :D

  • @GrungeRockabilly Good point.

  • Amazing. What a super band. Long Live Sonic Youth.

  • AWESOME!!!!!!

  • what an awesome performance......:D

  • Naming my first born son Thurston

  • @checkerdshoes21 Named my twins Lee and Thurston. No joke

  • @checkerdshoes21 That's been my plan for awhile now.

  • where did the 18 years go???

  • this band has survived everything through all the different genres simply fucking awesome

  • @TheChicano070 i agree!!

  • I'm not gay, but if I were gay I'd be gay for Thurston!

  • this song is gorgeous...reminds me the beauty of being young but also a lot of painful things...I was 12years old I hated my time I hated teenhood in the 90ies.....

  • Anyone know what tuning they are using here? know they are fans of fucking weird ones.

  • @maxhampshire don't know exactly but it's far form being a standard one

  • @maxhampshire Go to sonicyouth(dot)com > archives > gearography > enter site. There you can see practically all SY gear (including the effects they use if you click on the band members' name). If you go to 'links' there, you'll find a guitar/bass tab archive containing most Sonic Youth songs. Those tabs include the tunings used for each song.

    Hope I could help.

  • @ragnatoad WOW. Thanks, im going to geek out on this for a while. Good shout.

  • @maxhampshire Haha. No problem. I visit the gear guide regularly myself. The guy who makes it really does a great job.

  • @maxhampshire Thurston is using GABDGE as far as i know!

  • @elsheepio GABDEG

  • the dogs bollox !!

  • Pretty great version of a fine SY song! Even the camera work's way above average.

  • end of dayss sound trucks

  • Simply brilliant.

  • christ i wish i could play that lee ronaldo chorus riff!!

  • this song is just beautiful

  • un poco de protogrunge

  • amazing!

    it's great!

  • phoda!

  • 18 χρονάκια πριν

  • Thurston's so tall his Tele looks like a pen in his hands, lol.

  • thurston looks still that young.. he is never aging.. music keeps him immortal

  • Is that lionel messi at 3:40 ?

  • @Pacopunk24 hahahaha

  • Makes the studio version sound very much overproduced. They all still look so young here!

  • awesome quality man. sonic youth is the best!

  • flawless!

  • Sonic!!!!! Love you Kim

  • my all-time fave of theirs...awesome...

  • this song brings me over all hot and bothered!

    i love you sonic youth

    i love you sonic youth

    i love you sonic youth

    i love you sonic

  • what are the tabs when thurston breaks the silence at 4:06

  • The begining sonds a bit like "Love Comes in Spurts"

  • sonic youthh me gusta

  • that lead guitar in the chorus is so epic

  • saw them last year in dublin. they're still doing the same stuff there doing for 20 years and isn't getting old. you have to admire that. i reckon they're still wearing the same clothes too.

  • Speechless

  • yesssss!

  • This is such a great song. First one I ever heard from them and remains a favorite to play loud!

  • kim has the same bass and 17 more years old in jools holland live 2009

  • i love sonic youth

  • @harddrugssociety : me tooooo! :D

  • I've always wondered where Steve gets his haircuts.

  • great great great

  • do you guys know what guitar effects do they use for this song? specially in the sloppy bit where they play all the way down the neck.....

  • It's actually not that hard. You just need a drum stick or something similar, a wah pedal and a lot of dirt (Thurston usually uses a Proco Rat 2 or Turbo Rat). Then just strum all the strings as fast as you can and press the drumstick down on the neck, hard and slide it up and down. Use the wah to alter the tone.

  • thanks dude!

  • Again, I realize how tall Thurston is. God.

  • I love this band. They never had a foothold in the UK but they did gain a cult following amongst the true indie fans. That's the trouble with music today - too many Simon Cowells and other assorted, greedy tossers. If it doesn't seem overly commercially viable, it just doesn't get a chance. Sonic Youth are a breath of fresh air to me....brilliant.

  • steve is soo awesome

  • worst song ever....Naaaaaat!!! Utterly B-e-a-utiful.

  • timeless and fucking briliant ! :)

  • was this really that long ago? damn...

  • They really paved the way for some indie bands you heat today.

  • @blackdeathgrind

I know! Sitting here feeling incredibly ancient.....but happy!

  • One of those pieces that makes you want to pick up your guitar, and set it down at the same time. Like Washing Machine, it just leaves you wanting for nothing.

  • amo a Sonic son lo maximo y tocan chidisimo son lo mejor del mundo ojala vengan a Mexico me encantaria verlos en vivo

  • mindblowing distortion and feedback blasts....

  • maybe that was after they got their jazzmasters and jags stolen?

  • This is waaaaay before that...they ALMOST got them all back now btw....

  • Know exactly what you mean...and I saw a secret gig in New York at the Cooler back in 97 and it blew my mind as well. I guess those shows of theirs drive them to put an extra mile or something...I don't know that was great's all I can say...

  • this is my favorite sonic youth track definatelly, I loved it when thurston and Lee played Telecaster's sooo much cooler :) I'm not that a massive fan of teles but i LOVE Lee's tele duluxe!! :D

  • im not sure about labels but they seem to me like they took the batton from the velvets and they havent stopped running yet.

  • this is not punkRock!!! this is alternative post punk! they are the best of "90

  • ...this is the best band of the world....

  • everyone's an artist. it's up to us what kind of art we create.

  • I can't wait to see them on friday! :D

  • Comment removed

  • this may sound funny, but there at the begining it sounded like they were out of tune, more so than usual.

  • this is da bomb, cant wait to see them in december!

  • me too :) you seeing them in dublin by any chance?

  • yeah dublin it is, got ground tickets :)

i just wonder what they will play, there set lists are different at every gig

  • damn, i could only get balcony by the time i could afford it. i can't even begin to guess what they'll play. with most bands its easy but fuck knows what they'll do.

  • that sucks, i got tickets about 2 weeks after they went onsale, i dont know what songs to expect but they will be class no doubt

  • pronto, sonic youth en peru, urgente!!!!, antes que me muera!!!!

  • que buena banda!

  • YES!!!!

  • speaking of the screaming trees, this remind me of "black sun morning"

  • what does that mean John? kurt cobain and mark lanegan of nirvana and screaming trees also played with their eyes closed. and the members of sonic youth and nirvana were great friends. Mark, Kurt, and Thurston all wrote very sincere music from their hearts.

  • I love sugar kane

  • #1 Shadow Of A Doubt

    #2 The Diamond Sea

    #3 Superstar

    #4 I'm Not There

    #5 Hey Joni

    #6 Sugar Kane

#7 Nevermind (what was it anyway)

    #8 Kool Thing

    #9 Teenage Riot

    #10 Tom Violence

  • What?? no world looks red, or incinerate or total trash.

  • did anyone notice he played it with his eyes shut? stick your screaming trees blur oasis and nirvana up your arse

  • lee's hair is beatlerized here!!

  • Sonic Youth, one of my favourite bands. Brings back memories. There were so many great bands round that time, soundgarden, alice in chains, rage, nirvana, screaming trees, etc, etc. Alot of them were influenced from music of the late 50's, 60's and 70's.

    I was born 1985.

  • is Sonic Youth considered more grunge or punk?

  • A lighter form of Grunge. Definately not hard core.

  • Sonic Youth are so far from grunge that they should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as that garbage genre. They're a New York No Wave band along the lines of Glen Branca and DNA.

  • Finally somebody woh knows their music
