Argerich is one of my favourite pianists, but I have to say, not her most musical performance! The CONDUCTOR sets the tempo, not the pianist! Listen to how fast she plays at the start...

Just had the joy of hearing her do this with the glorious San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas.
This lady really adapts to orchestras! On this vid, the French band plays sexily, but labors a bit in the fast parts (despite Dutoit's doctorate in Argerich-ology). So, Martha flexes and waits, to accommodate.
In SF, she could do as she pleased. MTT and his ace crew seemed attached to her fingers, playing not only beautifully and lightning-fast, but in Martha's own style too.
Merci ! En fait, Je découvre Ravel. Et me penche sur Fauré. J'ai adoré " la valse" mais je la préfère pour orchestre. Je suis resté sans voix face à ce disons .. " délire" ou" foisonnement" harmonique. Incroyable !
You're not making sense at all. Please try fixing the grammar in you sentence. And I don't see how this is stereotypical or cliché. It is true that it is not being very international or open-minded when you write about a video in another language.
Je remarque que certaines personnes préfèrent critiquer facilement (ex maxrm114), j'aimerais les entendre jouer.... surement pas à la hauteur de l'orchestre national de france!
I would say that Bernstein looks like he's having a blast, but I think I like Argerich's better. I don't think either is necessarily better, but I just prefer Argerich.
The whole bassoon solo is played here by the soloist bassoonist, not by the two bassoonists... What a cheek!

@AttemptingToBeBusy
Maybe you're right, but nearly doubling the tempo at her entrances is one of her signature moves!
Besides, Dutoit's tempi make it easy to see why they divorced. He always begins with a tempo that underestimates her.
Anyway, you should check out her performance of this from 1985 with Aldo Ceccato! It's my personal favorite.
pianist3912 1 year ago 2
@AttemptingToBeBusy not really true. a soloist does have the liberty to set the tempo, or change it from what the conductor originally gave...

Haha! I love the way she plays that phrase at 2:45, it's almost like she's scolding the piano like a mother would scold a child!
She has the widest range of moods and colors of any pianist I've ever seen, and this concerto is one of the finest examples of that!

Dutoit starts in one tempo, then MA bumps it up 20 clicks, and then the bassoon soloists pulls it back! Delightful!
Her tempo in those solos is amazingly crazy.

my dear lord. he starts one tempo and then she starts another. this was dutoit's fault. was he drunk that night?
organboi 2 years ago
how do you know it's Dutoit's fault exactly? Argerich is almost famous for going faster when she's stressed.

En fait, Ravel a écrit ce concerto après son voyage aux États-Unis si je ne m'abuse. Il y a donc une influence bien sentie de Gershwin.

When you watch her at 4:10 , she looks at looks at least 15 years younger (she was 50 at the time!). I know it's not a very relevant comment lol
