  • The whole bassoon solo is played here by the soloist bassoonist, not by the two bassoonists... What a cheek!

  • She can drink a coffee while she's playing at that speed, i think xD!

  • no standing ovation? rediculous

  • @iansquared3 A German audience giving an ovation to a French orchestra? Unheard of haha

  • Argerich is one of my favourite pianists, but I have to say, not her most musical performance! The CONDUCTOR sets the tempo, not the pianist! Listen to how fast she plays at the start...

  • @AttemptingToBeBusy

Maybe you're right, but nearly doubling the tempo at her entrances is one of her signature moves!

Besides, Dutoit's tempi make it easy to see why they divorced. He always begins with a tempo that underestimates her.

Anyway, you should check out her performance of this from 1985 with Aldo Ceccato! It's my personal favorite.

  • @AttemptingToBeBusy not really true. a soloist does have the liberty to set the tempo, or change it from what the conductor originally gave...

  • Haha! I love the way she plays that phrase at 2:45, it's almost like she's scolding the piano like a mother would scold a child!

She has the widest range of moods and colors of any pianist I've ever seen, and this concerto is one of the finest examples of that!

  • Marvellous!

  • Maravilloso concierto, maravillosa pianista, maravilla interpretación!

  • Martha Argerich is the technic master!!!

P.S: love the bassoon and piano at 2:11... Definitely a new "texture" there!

  • GRANDIÖS!

  • i like i when she smiles a second before the end:)

  • so outstanding!

  • Two words.. HELL YES!! :D

  • werent dutoit and argerich married at some stage?

  • this piano concerto is brilliant, apparently it's influenced by Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue

  • gershwin ask to ravel to teach, but ravel reject to him for his talent

  • they're still a great team though ex-husbands and wives

  • Dutoit starts in one tempo, then MA bumps it up 20 clicks, and then the bassoon soloists pulls it back! Delightful!

Her tempo in those solos is amazingly crazy.

  • she's like a crazy godly witch casting spells with her hands on the piano; the piano and the music are juz under her total control

  • She is a lioness...wow !!! get out of her way !!!

  • Beautiful....

  • somethings wrong at 1:00. something with the horn.

  • came in a fraction early! youre right

  • my dear lord. he starts one tempo and then she starts another. this was dutoit's fault. was he drunk that night?

  • how do you know it's Dutoit's fault exactly? Argerich is almost famous for going faster when she's stressed.

  • She was still looking sexy by her 50s. Amazing. Beautiful.

  • Argentine style dudes!

    Martha u rock!

    saludos!!!!

  • Just had the joy of hearing her do this with the glorious San Francisco Symphony and Michael Tilson Thomas.

This lady really adapts to orchestras! On this vid, the French band plays sexily, but labors a bit in the fast parts (despite Dutoit's doctorate in Argerich-ology). So, Martha flexes and waits, to accommodate.

In SF, she could do as she pleased. MTT and his ace crew seemed attached to her fingers, playing not only beautifully and lightning-fast, but in Martha's own style too.

    Wow...

  • i was there too in SF! marvelous!

  • When you watch her at 4:10 , she looks at looks at least 15 years younger (she was 50 at the time!). I know it's not a very relevant comment lol

  • Merci ! En fait, Je découvre Ravel. Et me penche sur Fauré. J'ai adoré " la valse" mais je la préfère pour orchestre. Je suis resté sans voix face à ce disons .. " délire" ou" foisonnement" harmonique. Incroyable !

  • yay for pointless replies...

  • I made a mistake tht's all. My repiy was for Val francois in fact. You don't need to be rude for that .. or .. pointless ...

  • i just enjoy pissing off people sometimes, it's a really bad habit... but great to know that you're being so international-minded.

  • Pls, avoid clichés and stereotypes you'll be more ... " open( international ?? lol) minded !". That's all folk.

  • You're not making sense at all. Please try fixing the grammar in you sentence. And I don't see how this is stereotypical or cliché. It is true that it is not being very international or open-minded when you write about a video in another language.

  • Thnak you Kimolerik and Olga for this superlative video!!!. Cheers, ~Sergio

    What exactly was the mistake?

  • Horn screw up at 1:00, but that didn't stop Martha. Your plot to ruin the performance FAILED Mr. Horn.

  • She certainly is in her element here!

  • argerich kick the asses of all other pianists with this movement....

  • watch Bernstein.

  • I would say that Bernstein looks like he's having a blast, but I think I like Argerich's better. I don't think either is necessarily better, but I just prefer Argerich.

  • Bernstein's is great, and tons of fun :) I agree with you that he is awesome, but hmmm I also prefer her

  • hahaha!! all the wind players must have been gasping breathlessly trying to keep up with argerich's speed.

  • amazing performance :)
