This song was collected on the Outer Banks of NC (in the '30s or '40s) from Eleazar Tillet by Frank & Ann Warner (also collected "Tom Dooley" from Frank Proffitt ). Son, Jeff Warner, has recorded it, as has Pamela Goddard. Tune identified w/ "Bonnie Blue Flag," which confidently recounts the secession of the states at the beginning of the War Between the States. The use of the same tune for the deeply personally female tragedy at the end of the conflict only heightens the irony.
