It sure is. Sitar and veena are actually meant to be played by both sexes. In the Vedic scriptures veena was played by both Narada Muni (male) and Devi Saraswati (female). Sitar is a descendant of the veena so the same rules apply. :)

The best day of my life was in June 2000, playing in a concert at London's Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. I was playing the Scottish Highland Pipes, accompanying Lulu singing "Amazing Grace". Lulu's just great! And also performing was Anoushka Shankar - I loved her playing - and Ravi was in the audience. Name-dropping again: Madonna, Brian Adams, Jimmy Nail, Angharad Rees, Vanessa Redgrave, dancers from Moulin Rouge et al. all performed too. What a great bunch of guys. Bob Ash
