I turned my iMac on, and I was still having difficulties. After much trial and error, I discovered the problem. Lou, make sure to tell people that in order to see anything, they will need to look directly at the screen. I wasn't looking at the screen at first, and that's what caused my confusion.

I am afraid you may be thinking of the Zetard brand of monitor that is made in the former Yugoslavia. I can't recommend this monitor as its glass is made with sand from Chernobyl. It provides a low quality of optics and it will kill you with deadly deadly radiation. I recommend you buy a HDTV and plug your computer into that. 52" or bigger should do.
