music now is so hard to listen too, digital has made autotune and the beibers and gagas of the world, music now is just shit, maybe a handful of good bands but mostly unbearable audio pressure level versions of music for future car or beer comercials,I love my vinyl were as I like some of my cds
I hate the scenes where they are throwing the records onto the table, just stacking them up. This is a good video, I wish they'd mentioned that skipping records can be repaired, and that shows the dedication(and obsession) some collectors have.,
Some young music listeners should be supporting all those artists by purchasing new CDs or digital downloads offered of those same records they buy used for cheap. Or go to their concerts.
When you buy used, its to save money sometimes, understandable, but at the same time, you're not really paying the recording artist anymore.
When you buy classic albums used at a used record store, mint or goodwill found, you are not benefitting the ARTIST(s). What you are doing is buying something thats already been sold without any profits going directly or in part directly to the creators of the music.
When you choose vinyl analogue - again used, old, collectible, and you do not buy the digital modern day official release CD or lossy/lossless, the musicians dont get paid.
@wendileona True, but if I buy a new or used Patsy Cline LP, she is not living and so none of the money goes to her anyway. Same is true about Buddy Holly LPs, John Lennon LPs, etc, etc.
Trivia: One of the members of Pearl Jam is an avid collector of The Who LPs. Should he only buy new, re-issue vinyl of them?
Collecting vinyl through these quality shops doesn't have your cash going through the likes of these corporations. When Island started out... Their attitude was "F*CK THE POP-CHARTS"... And that's my attitude now. Burn Your CD's and get with it.
@jasper068 No you're also saying FUCK YOU (why the * we know the what word you're using) to the recording artists, the creator(s) of the music.
There is no "ritual" of listening to music. Music is more than the gear or format you choose. On YouTube people comment on how they love the song and the memories, etc but its all compressed, pixilated but at the core its just the music.
Don't listen to records or even CD's, or lossy MP3's - listen to MUSIC.
Fools... It's nothing to do with price... It's also more than 'cracking the seal, and wiping off the dust'... It's more than just that. Collecting vinyl is a great thing... As I call them (and many more do also), 'Create Diggers' are more-or-less archaeologists. There's a guy on here (Youtube), that has the largest collection in the world, with over 1-Million LP's and 1.5-Million Singles. 83% of his archive is available to us, ONLY by Vinyl.
I got the CD about a year ago, and it's true, i never noticed the details on the cover, the detail on the cigirates, on the eyebrows of the angel.Very small details i never noticed when i first downloaded Jump and Panama from an ilegal website and then when i got the cover art from iTunes, such a diference big diference.
Great segment. Extremely well done. I had the pleasure of visiting the Ryerson campus in the 80's. Tremendously creative vibe then, and I'm pleased to see it's continuing now.
I guess we were talking about two different things then. It's true that there are no square waves in sound, but the clipping on cd's does introduce a lot of digital distortion. Sounds awful, no matter which way you put it.
No, it's unfortunately true these days due to loudness war. You can compress and limit music on cd's so much that it's basically a square wave on the loud parts. Impossible to do on vinyl, the medium will physically not allow it.
I guess vinyl reminds people of an era when music was actually good (1964- 1984). But I'm sure young people of today will look back on the present decade and say, "yeah, American Idol, reality TV shows, Simple Plan and Nickelback, those were just the best!"
Hahahaha...well go ahead and enlighten me then. Mariah Carey, Lil Wayne and Usher are better than the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Who HOW exactly? ;)
Not worth my time. thats only one genrea of music. what about mozart and bach. and no usher and mariah carey cant because its a whole different genrea of music. but you have no idea about music now these days if your only saying names youve heard on tv. it defently seems like youve been out of the loop for a bit and missed listening to some great music.
@daryl060761 "Nickelback!?" You've gotta be kidding right! Sure there are some good bands today, but they are few and far between; and unlike yesteryear, most of the good artists of today are not disseminated on the radio. Having said that, I believe that there was still much better selection and quantity of good artists from previous decades. Fleet Foxes is a very promising band that I have recently discovered when purchasing their self titled lp.
@daryl060761 I know...isn't that just so dam sad? lol I mean I like Nickelback and a lot of Realit TV shows, but how in the heck can The Real World or 16 and Pregnant (which should be named bitches that don't know how to use condoms!) be put in the memory bank on the same levels as Zeppelin, Hendrix, The Who, and Kiss lol.
i just can't get in to vinyl, i don't even like cassette tapes or cd's anymore. i really only listen to mp3's, i keep a cd player as a back up just in case, and i have about 50 cd's. but i just move with technology, its just my personality. I'm going to be buying a few records from artists that i really like (James Taylor, the Beatles) but not to listen to, just as memorabilia
Very cool feature. I have to say I agree with the whole "classic era" thing. The music industry has certainly changed. Anybody listen to any "concept mp3's" lately?
Actually, I think the modern equivalent is USB keys in various shapes. "Bullet For My Valentine" released an album on USB keys in the shape of Bullets.
Excellent , maybe the idiots at the record companies will wake up and see what the real future of music is ! ipods , please !vinyl will always be the way to listen and enjoy music.
Excellent piece. I agree with what was said about the golden age of music:'it was more about creativity and expression back then rather than profit'. Amen!!! Thanks for sharing!

It's about the music, and not how anyone is paid. That is a great thing about vinyl- you have something tangible that you can sell or keep.

This is the bad side of the new vinyl fad.

See some of the Loudness War videos here on Youtube. It's not "just" a loss of dynamics we're talking about...

"The golden age of music" lol what a baby-boomers myth that is.
If you think like that you're just totally ignorant or narrow-minded about new music.
