Back in 1979 a simple but effective trailer like this made people scared and interested at the same time.
Would this kind of trailer work today?? Nope. Because today's brainless movie audience want everything spoonfed to them. A deep voice telling the plot, lots of shots of sex, bad jokes and overly dramatic music.
There's even some youtube personality who does "modern version" trailers for classic movies. They are entertaining at least. Highligting our time.
If I recall, in 1979 the Alien was by far the most repulsive and horrifying creature ever presented on the screen.... thanks to that crazy Swiss guy. ;)

Alien - was the first fusion of deep space sci-fi and horror that worked at a level beyond such classics as "Forbidden Planet". The improvised dialogue by the amazing cast gave it that utterly realistic feeling - it was like you were in the room with them. The Nostromo was a horrible place to be!
Aliens - today it looks like a very well done action movie, but it was the first of its kind. Outstanding!

Ha ha I just recently read this on Wikipedia: Scott had wanted the Alien to bite off Ripley's head and then make the final log entry in her voice, but the producers vetoed this idea as they believed that the Alien had to die at the end of the film.
@SubterraneaCCS Well, there is still a triumph at the end because Ripley lives - that is what I'm talking about. But yes, I agree that, especially with this reworked music over Goldsmith's original composition, it sets an ominous tone right away.

Alien and Aliens are not comparable, they are two different movies, horror and action. Both brilliant. But if I should choose between them it would be because of the factor in which the movie sat new standards for the genre, it would be Alien. It is a tad more difficult to create a true horror concept with few guns and a small crew etc.

This is when trailers were displayed with suspense. These days almost half of the movie is shown before people even get to the cinema. Then you get the annoying people who download the unfinished version of the movie just to announce that they saw it first and spoil it for everyone. the same issue with games. That magic is gone. Only a few directors still got it there.
What makes this trailer so good in addition to no dialogue, the quick cuts and the ominous shrill is the end shot of the Nostromo on the dark side of the giant planet heading towards the unknown. What will they face that sounds and looks so terrifying? Now, that's the way to sell a movie!

I still have Nightmares about being on the Nostromo. You can not copy this movie or chop it up (but they try). It's art. I'm a fan of the age where real movies were made. I found it shlocky. For some reason it reminded me of 'The Starlost', or 'Space: 1999'. As I said, it was the reviewer's face that got me into the theater. I liked the trailer to 'Star Wars' (we just called it 'Star Wars' in those days) because of its use of classical music, evocative of '2001: A Space Odyssey', and its minimized use of sound from the film; I suppose people respond to different things differently. But I found the trailer for 'Alien' quite shlocky, all the same.
One of the scariest movies of all time. Like Star Wars, this movie made a huge jump in the sci-fi drama, with a touch of horror of course. This definitley showed a much darker and terrifying side of space travel and Extra-Terrestrial life.

I remember seeing this movie at the theater back in 1979, when I was on shore leave while in the Navy. My brothers took me to see this flick with no warning other than saying it had an awesome trailer. The flick totally blew me, my brothers and the rest of the audience away. For me, it ranks up there with seeing Halloween, The Thing, Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead for the first time at the theaters. Aahhh memories.

@McLarenMercedes Haha yeah the the avp movies were realy preditor movies that had aliens in em, although they were better than alien 3 and 4 in my opinion. avp2 is basically a zombie movie only replace zombies with xenomorphs and add a preditor in there 2. long story short, they should have left these films at alien, aliens and preditor!
There is a short film floating around about the making of this movie featuring H.R.Giger. All 5 actors got to see a glimpse of the alien in Gigers studio pre-production. I remember Veronica Cartwright saying she had to gulp down a couple shots of Scotch afterwards knowing what she was going to have to deal with on the set of the movie....
It's pretty bad when a 7' tall guy in a latex suit can scare seasoned actors THAT bad!!!! My hats off to Giger!!!!!

Alien is already classic - great storyline, brilliant visual effects, scary as hell, superb acting. Sigourney Weaver was stunning but all the actors did a great job. The First Alien movie was the scariest.
At 1:03 above the leftmost person's head is that an adult alien crawling around the rock, and if it is, how does that fit into the plot (this scene is near the beginning of the movie IIRC)?
There's something, but only a default due to the video quality. There's no more adults living in here -they lack any lifeform to parasite...untill the Nostromo crew shows up

Imagine hearing the noises around the middle of the trailer, as loud as they were, now imagine you ruinning in a huge open field in the middle of nowhere with unknown figures chasing you, you keep looking back, you dont stop running, the sounds keep playing and they keep chasing you..... i dont know about you guys, but it gives me the creeps.
Cats are cute to us - but in the animal kingdom they are extremely scary. Natural killers.
The alien is basically a very large outer-space cat. "Jonesy" hides in a locker - he knows what's coming before any of the crew do!
This is a terrific trailer which actually sells the cat as the villain - I think I would believe the cat was "possessed" by an alien or something like that.

Such a daring trailer - because there's no dialogue, no real special effects scenes to wow the audience.
It's all about mood - and if they've got that wrong, there's no safety net. It will tank at the box office.
This doesn't sell the plot or any of the characters - it sells the mood. And the mood in the final film is even better than in this masterpiece of a trailer.
Its a pity the trailer for Avatar is bullshit next to this excellent edit. This trailer for Alien gives nothing away, while making you curious to go and see it. Avatar's trailer gos on forever. The music for this trailer is more creepy than the original soundtrack.
By the way, if you like the musical ambience used for the Alien movie trailer, you ought to get your hands on some CD...the band is Delerium, and the album is "Spheres". It could be another soundtrack for Alien: horror in the depths of space and universe.
Without a doubt this is the greatest most bloodchilling trailer in the history of horror movies. It´s perfect. The psychologic horror factor is presented in the greatest fashion one could ever imagine. Have you noticed how trailers are usually made in such fashion a movie the sucks big time seems interesting? Not the case here, the trailer and, of course, the movie are masterpieces.
what i love about this movie is how it captures the true meaning and shows the complexity of fear in a human being when they encounter something theyve never seen before....most horror movies dont show that......another thing is ill do anything to go back to 1979 and watch this movie in theaters, and to have the mentality people had back then....it would have been fucking scary for whoever saw that movie back in 79...this movie is amazingly good

The trailor is super spooky!! I remember seeing this as a kid and that alone was scary enough!! :) the soundtrack is freaky! I wish todays film makers paid attention to why these films are classics!

Ridley had major arguments with the suits over making this film! glad Ridley got his way! many years later we get stuff such as AVPR which is what the SUITS wanted! it just shows how a greedy film companys arrogance can wreck something that started off great

I remember seeing this movie at the theater back in 1979, when I was on shore leave while in the Navy. My brothers took me to see this flick with no warning other than saying it had an awesome trailer. The flick totally blew me, my brothers and the rest of the audience away. For me, it ranks up there with seeing Halloween, The Thing, Suspiria and Dawn of the Dead for the first time at the theaters. Aahhh memories.

My absolute favourite movie! But I have never found it scary. This trailer gives me the creeps however. :) I think the first two films are fantastic but the rest are really bad.
The novel and the games are also great.

This is the best movie ever, the most scary and terrifying film for a long time.
Of course, people have seen worse and better horrormovies but this movie is very phycological and scary in that matter. And this movie was the first in its genre ever, thanks to H.R Giger. Whitout him, the alien monster would be a jellyblob with 20 arms!!!...Now, its a horrifying monster that have inspired moviemakers allover the world..!

Wow, this film came out years before I was born, but I bet seeing it in the cinema at the time must have scared people shitless. The special effects still hold up today. It's amazing.

I am trying to wipe my memory clean of the abysmal avp movie. Naturally I never saw the sequal, which was both an audience and critic mega flop. Wish they could burn these crossovers.

@McLarenMercedes Haha yeah the the avp movies were realy preditor movies that had aliens in em, although they were better than alien 3 and 4 in my opinion. avp2 is basically a zombie movie only replace zombies with xenomorphs and add a preditor in there 2. long story short, they should have left these films at alien, aliens and preditor!

There is a short film floating around about the making of this movie featuring H.R.Giger. All 5 actors got to see a glimpse of the alien in Gigers studio pre-production. I remember Veronica Cartwright saying she had to gulp down a couple shots of Scotch afterwards knowing what she was going to have to deal with on the set of the movie....
It's pretty bad when a 7' tall guy in a latex suit can scare seasoned actors THAT bad!!!! My hats off to Giger!!!!!

For the longest time Aliens was my fave, but watching this film after getting a little older its a tie for 1st place for me. Ian Holm's evil robot performance was and still is chilling to the bone, I think

Alien is already classic - great storyline, brilliant visual effects, scary as hell, superb acting. Sigourney Weaver was stunning but all the actors did a great job. The First Alien movie was the scariest.

At 1:03 above the leftmost person's head is that an adult alien crawling around the rock, and if it is, how does that fit into the plot (this scene is near the beginning of the movie IIRC)?

To the uploader, this isnt the teaser. This is the Trailer. The teaser for alien was basically still images with (I believe) Orsen Welles saying "Attention! Attention! To the crew of the USS NOSTROMO!".

Imagine hearing the noises around the middle of the trailer, as loud as they were, now imagine you ruinning in a huge open field in the middle of nowhere with unknown figures chasing you, you keep looking back, you dont stop running, the sounds keep playing and they keep chasing you..... i dont know about you guys, but it gives me the creeps.

Best Trailer for a horror movie to this day. This and The Thing.
Now adays we have bullshit like saw1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10 and Scream None of those craptastic movies will ever be as great as this or the Thing.

The cat is a great plot device.
Cats are cute to us - but in the animal kingdom they are extremely scary. Natural killers.
The alien is basically a very large outer-space cat. "Jonesy" hides in a locker - he knows what's coming before any of the crew do!
This is a terrific trailer which actually sells the cat as the villain - I think I would believe the cat was "possessed" by an alien or something like that.

The best sci-fi movie ever made. The "adult Star Wars" after "Star Wars" 1977. But "Star Wars" isn't really a sci-fi movie in my opinion, It's a timeless saga like the "The Lord of Rings".

I've only seen this tonight - it is brilliant.
Such a daring trailer - because there's no dialogue, no real special effects scenes to wow the audience.
It's all about mood - and if they've got that wrong, there's no safety net. It will tank at the box office.
This doesn't sell the plot or any of the characters - it sells the mood. And the mood in the final film is even better than in this masterpiece of a trailer.
How many films can we say that about?

Its a pity the trailer for Avatar is bullshit next to this excellent edit. This trailer for Alien gives nothing away, while making you curious to go and see it. Avatar's trailer gos on forever. The music for this trailer is more creepy than the original soundtrack.

By the way, if you like the musical ambience used for the Alien movie trailer, you ought to get your hands on some CD...the band is Delerium, and the album is "Spheres". It could be another soundtrack for Alien: horror in the depths of space and universe.

Without a doubt this is the greatest most bloodchilling trailer in the history of horror movies. It´s perfect. The psychologic horror factor is presented in the greatest fashion one could ever imagine. Have you noticed how trailers are usually made in such fashion a movie the sucks big time seems interesting? Not the case here, the trailer and, of course, the movie are masterpieces.

what i love about this movie is how it captures the true meaning and shows the complexity of fear in a human being when they encounter something theyve never seen before....most horror movies dont show that......another thing is ill do anything to go back to 1979 and watch this movie in theaters, and to have the mentality people had back then....it would have been fucking scary for whoever saw that movie back in 79...this movie is amazingly good
